BIM, the Irish fisheries board, is helping a company develop a new range of long life crab products.
Yawl Bay Seafoods Ltd, a family run seafood company based in Youghal, Co. Cork, has just launched its new range of crab products. Due to the innovative vacuum packaging developed with assistance from BIM, the distinctively delicate, sweet taste of Yawl Bay Seafood’s cooked crab is claimed to be as good after a fortnight as it is on the day it’s landed, making it a fantastically useful range for professional chefs and home cooks alike.
Yawl Bay Seafood’s new quality cooked crab products – 100g vacuum packed packages of crab toes and crabmeat – have been created by David Browne, the second generation of this family business, who has been working on the range for the past three years. David started trialling the new products 18 months ago, under the guidance of Dr Susan Steele and John Fagan at the Cork based Seafood Development Company.(SDC)
The SDC offers the facility to research, develop and pilot new products before companies commit to full commercialisation and capital investment costs. Dr. Susan Steele, BIM’s Seafood Innovation Coordinator explains how BIM assisted in the product development
She said: “We thoroughly enjoyed working with David on this unique product. This product appears simple but it took over nine months of constant trial and error to get it right so the development path was far from simple. The quality of the crab used in this product is second to none. Luxury products are not usually associated with a long shelf-life but this product has broken the mould. I have no doubt that David and his team will be inundated with orders from top restaurants and retailers as a result’
David Browne of Yawl Bay Seafood said: “For 25 years we have focused on producing premium quality seafood products, with our own smoked salmon being the backbone of our business. Six years ago we opened our factory outlet which serves only the freshest fish landed at local ports and now we have this exciting new range of cooked crab. We have had terrific support from Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) and Enterprise Ireland, and with the added help from the South Cork Enterprise Board we have updated our premises to enable us to bring this product to market, creating one full-time and six part-time jobs.”

Sean Sherlock T.D., (Minister of State with responsibility for Research and Innovation) has said that plans to merge the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) with the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Science (IRCHSS) into a consolidated single council under the Higher Education Authority will bring positive benefits to the Irish research community. The merger of the two Councils was announced as part of the Government’s Public Service Reform Plan published today.
“IRCSET and IRCHSS both play fundamental roles in supporting researchers in the early stage of their careers, in fostering skills development and in encouraging independent exploratory research. This role is essential to nurturing the talent we need for a vibrant research system and a creative, innovative and prospering economy and society.
“IRCHSS has played a unique part in creating opportunities for talented researchers across the humanities and social sciences disciplines. The vital importance to Ireland of supporting research and human talent development across these disciplines will be given recognition and protection within the new Council arrangements.
“In bringing the two bodies together as a single Council under the Higher Education Authority, the Government is committed to strengthening the focus on early stage career opportunity and support for high quality research talent. The new Council will deliver important efficiencies in the operational support for that work. Bringing science and humanities disciplines together in this way will also offer potential for achieving enhanced inter-disciplinary synergies and opportunity. Work will now commence on the detailed arrangements for giving effect to the merger.“
Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has welcomed the decision of Phil Hogan TD, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government to approve design proposals for Carrigtwohill’s Sewerage Scheme. The proposals, submitted by Cork County Council, are for the upgrading and expansion of the wastewater treatment plant in Carrigtwohill which is part of the sewerage scheme.
“I am pleased that Cork County Council is to be given the go ahead to prepare contract documents for these wastewater improvements in Carrigtwohill. Once these documents are prepared, the Council will be in a position to seek tenders from interested parties to carry out the work. It is an important step in providing a more modern sewerage infrastructure for Carrigtwohill allowing the wastewater system to cater for current and future residential and commercial needs.
“The works will form the first phase of the upgrading of the wastewater system to cater for a population of 45,000. I have been advised that the total contract for all phases of the works, which once completed will cater for 60,000 people. The Department of Environment, Community and Local Government has estimated that the total cost for all phases of the proposed works will be approximately €14 million”, said Deputy Stanton
“It should be noted also that the additional capacity of the wastewater treatment facilities should also contribute to further enterprise development in this area of East Cork by making Carrigtwohill and the surrounding areas even more attractive location for multinationals and other businesses. It should therefore, hopefully increase industry and employment in the area.
“I understand that Cork County Council have already carried out advance works on Carrigtwohill wastewater scheme which involved the provision of foul and storm sewers and two pumping stations. I hope that the Council will be in a position to continue its work soon once the tendering process has been concluded.
The splendid and unique Phantom of the Opera event took place last Friday night 11th November 2011. The setting of the event was perfect – candles ordained the church and the massive 12ft screen took centre stage of the imposing archway of St Marys Collegiate Church.

Attendees of approximately 100 sipped on wine and soaked up the atmosphere, as Eric Sweeney took to the stage and the silent movie commenced. Eric Sweeneys conveyed the film exceptionally well in his astounding organ improvisation and interpretation to the old 1929 movie. His performance was not overpowering or suppressive to the film – but one that married seamlessly to the storyline, complemented and enhanced the viewing experience. This was a remarkable event – likes that had never been seen before in Youghal. One of the elder members of the congregation noted that the last time they were at a silent movie – he was 8 years old and it cost just a few shillings!

Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on sport, Cork East TD Sandra McLellan, has congratulated the Irish soccer team on their successful qualification for the Euro 2012 Championships in Poland/Ukraine.
Speaking after Ireland’s 5-1 aggregate play-off win over Estonia Deputy McLellan said:
“I want to congratulate the squad of players, the management team and all of the supporters on their tremendous achievement. Last night’s result was fantastic for Ireland.
“The 1-1 result was the culmination of a gruelling qualification campaign which began over a year and a half ago. In that time the Irish team has put in some sterling performances full of skill, determination and commitment.
“It is a real lift for the whole country and gives us something special to look forward to next summer, when we’ll compete amongst the best teams in Europe for the first time in twenty four years. I’m sure thousands of dedicated fans will be planning their trips already.
“A lot of people will have very fond memories of our last outing in the European Championships in 1988 and hope that we can replicate some of those performances in Poland/Ukraine.”
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Arts, Heritage, Tourism and Sport, Sandra McLellan, has said the film and animation industry has the potential to create an extra 5,000 jobs and to be worth more than €1bn to the Irish economy in the next five years if appropriately managed.
Speaking in the Dáil today on the Irish Film Board (Amendment) Bill 2011 Deputy McLellan said:
“This industry has the potential to be a really good story for Ireland. Full time employment can double from 5,400 to over 10,000 in the next five years if we maximise efficiencies and the potential of the industry. This would see it worth more than €1bn to the economy here. We want to continue to see the Bravehearts and Saving Private Ryans being made here, and also the international TV productions such as the Tudors and Game of Thrones. So too, we want to see indigenous Irish productions like My Left Foot, The Wind that Shakes the Barley, and so on.
“Going forward it will be very important that we take a very thorough approach to how we manage this sector, how we measure relative success and relative failure. How we ensure accountability. How we review and how we improve. This point is not just applicable to those groups, organisations and companies receiving funding but to the sector as a whole, the state agencies and the IFB itself. While it won’t necessarily always be the main driver, we should not be afraid to measure return on investment.”
“Last year we saw the fantastic potential of Irish animation with the Secret of Kells and Granny O’Grimm receiving international acclaim at the Academy Awards. What was particularly special at that time was the coverage of Ballyfermot College where some of the animators had honed their skills. This was a great day for those nominated but also for the industry here and for Ireland as a whole. I’m certain it provided inspiration for thousands of students at home. It presented a picture of endless possibilities. The possibility of a viable and sustainable career in this industry, and even more, the possibility of a successful and prosperous one.”
Its not often we can talk about a local musician, singer, songwriter on YoughalOnline. However today we can. Its come to the attention of YoughalOnline that local man Shane Supple has received over 60,000 hits on his YouTube video “I want you to want me”. Such is the popularity of this song that it has featured on SKY TV’s Hot Country and Hot Country Extra several times over the last few months.
Click on the video below to see Shane singing “Lifetime Guarantee”. The video was filmed and produced by Blue Shed Productions and has had a massive 60,000 hits on the You Tube Music Video Section and is still climbing!
For anyone who does not know Shane he is the son of local singing legend Art Supple and Shane has been writing songs for a number of years now. We have run articles before on this local talent and when he launched his album last year Country Style Blues we wrote an article about it promising bigger and better things for Shane
To top it all off the latest news in is that two of Shane’s songs have been shortlisted for awards Already this year the first song “Lifetime Guarantee” which was recorded by Mick Flavin was on the Irish Country Album of the year 2010. This song has now been shortlisted for an award in Germany for one of the most requested songs on Country Radio there. His second song “The Highway Song” has been used on a top gear style TV show in Asia has been nominated as well for a top award.
Shane has a popular following online and his myspace account boasts almost 5500 fans. His songs there, getting over 3,750 plays. His facebook page again has almost 1800 friends and fans alike. On YouTube his songs in total have generated over 90,000 hits. On ReverbNation he has over 6,800 fans and he has remained at number one in the cork country charts for over a year. It goes to show That Shane is not just local he is global and while the world of the Internet is fairly new Shane has managed to intergrate himself online quite well.
Shane has won numerous awards over the years from local radio in Youghal to radio station around the world for his songs and has been interviewed on a lot of stations here in Ireland and the UK. His songs are in great demand with many top singers here in ireland using them. Currently Shane is writing a selection of songs for a movie which will be filmed next year. He has co written many songs over the years with local and international artists and so far has been able to remain under the radar, but with this latest word of succes and good news it wont be long before he to will become a very successful songwriter.
Shane is fairly modest about his songwriting and if you listen in to his radio program on Youghal Radio each week you can hear him promoting local bands, singers, songwriters, groups from all over Ireland, He doesn’t use this to promote any of his own music in fact he quite often refuses to play his own songs. His excuse, this program is not about me its about those listening in and the guests I have on. For just over a year he wrote an article in the East Cork Journal promoting the same bands from his radio show. I think its time we noticed not just the work he does in promoting Irish music but we notice his own body of work which speaks for itself.
