Youghal railway station served the town of Youghal in County Cork, Ireland. The station opened on 21 May 1860. Regular services were withdrawn on 2 February 1963, although the station remained open privately, with occasional heritage excursion trains. Although a train has not travelled to Youghal since 1988, the station is legally still open.

The line came out of passenger service in 1963, but CIÉ continued to use the line for twice daily goods trains till 1978 and the sugar beet trains in season till 1982. CIE also ran summer seaside excursions to Youghal for passengers, however this apparently was never utilised to its full potential.[clarification needed]

In 1981/1982 the final beet crop in East Cork was realised and CIÉ then refused to maintain the line any longer or use it for summer excursions.

The line has never been legally closed in order for CIÉ to circumvent a European railway law,[which?] which states that all railways that are closed down have to be fully maintained for a further 10 years.[citation needed] The only maintenance the line received after 1982 was to cut down vegetation to allow infrequent private passenger trains to traverse the line at slow speeds. The last train to depart from the seaside station was in 1987 by the Irish Railway Record Society. The following year IÉ laid on two passenger trains for the GAA in Dublin from Midleton. The line was then abandoned and deliberately on the instructions of IÉ allowed to decay. Since 1988 IÉ showed little or no interest in the line only when they wanted to cannibalise it for parts for other lines, most notably 1992 when seven miles of track between Midleton and Youghal were removed for reuse in Sligo. IÉ has demolished old crossing keepers’ houses and just left the rubble lying in untidy heaps, has replaced the crossing gates at Mogeely but just dumped the old ones on the tracks along with the lever frame as well, making the stations looking very untidy for local residents. IÉ has consistently refused to tidy up the areas by the old stations (Mogeely, Killeagh and Youghal) and in recent times only re-roofed Youghal station due to a court order. IÉ refuses however to entertain or even consider allowing any form of private use for the disused railway corridor.

When Adrian and John Healy started Abbeyseafood in June 2011, they thought they would find themselves splashing around for the first few months, but thanks to a warm welcome from the people of Youghal, they didn’t feel like a fish out of water, instead the brothers have used Youghal as a cornerstone for their seafood selling business.

As 2012 approaches, the brothers have taken a moment to reflect on what 2011 has brought to them.  Aidie commented ‘We started the year on the wrong side of the unemployment line, and it looked like things were not going to get any better.  Then we decided to get a loan and start up our own business, and using our experience to help us.  Both myself and John fished for a good number of years and so we had the knowledge base already there also, I love eating fish and am always ready to try a new recipe.  We chose Youghal as it was close to home and we had a lot of family here but being honest, we couldn’t have hoped for a better reception.’

The business has achieved a new level of growth and has expanded to different towns, but finds that the welcome from the people of Youghal on a Saturday is by far the best around.  Abbeyseafood pride themselves on selling fresh fish at competitive prices, and with Dolan’s fruit and vegetable stall beside them, they are the ideal combination.  But it doesn’t stop there; the offering from Abbey Seafood goes far beyond the usual of simply selling seafood.  The brothers are on hand with recipe tips and if that still isn’t enough then they will give you a recipe to take home with you.

John said ‘we came to Dolphin Square with an idea in mind, and that idea has grown steadily throughout the year and it is thanks to the people of Youghal, who have not only been customers, but have also been supporters of our business.  We were delighted by the coverage that we received from Youghal Online and from C.R.Y. FM, we certainly couldn’t have done it without that type of support.’

So as the new year dawns and Abbey Seafood look forward to spending another year with the people of Youghal, there are changes afoot, in the form of their new and improved website www.abbeyseafood.ie.  Full of recipe ideas and some funny images to put a smile on your face; why not give it a look.

Best of luck for 2012!

The Memorial Committee is pursuing the erection of a Memorial to victims of institutional abuse as recommended in the Ryan Report.

A budget of up to €0.5 million is being set aside for the project.

Following a consultation process with survivor groups and interested parties the Committee launched the competition at the end of July with a closing date of 13th October 2011.

This first stage of the competition process invited expressions of interest outlining the concepts/approach by the applicants of the nature, medium and format through which the memorial is to be delivered.

Thirty two expressions of interest were received.  The jury for the competition comprised the Memorial Committee and

Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence against Children;
Brian O’ Doherty, New York based, Irish born artist, sculptor and film maker;
Pat Cooney, Principal Architect, Office of Public Works (OPW),  and
Vivienne Roche, sculptor and co-founder National Sculpture Factory, Cork.

Having examined the thirty two submissions, the jury selected a shortlist of six competitors to proceed to Stage 2 of the competition, when those selected will provide more detailed and specific proposals for each stage of the design, planning and realisation of the Memorial.

The Committee expects to be in a position to announce the competition winner in June 2012.

Carols were sung by the Clashmore Choir, and people got the opportunity to personally ring the Congress  Bell.   Gardaí from the Parish of Youghal and West Waterford were on hand to ensure the safety of the ‘pilgrims’ and keep the traffic flowing freely.

The organisation and arrangements made by the people of the Parish of Youghal, and in particular the enormous amount of work put in by Fr. Patrick Winkle, are to be lauded.   The Congress Bell and Icons paid just a quick visit to Youghal, but their presence was felt by all who came along during the two days to view and ring the Bell which, in June 2012, will be a VIP at the International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin.

The Bell, handed over at the Stone Bridge in Youghal, will remain in the Diocese of Waterford, visiting twenty two Parishes,  until January 8th next when it will leave Waterford by yet another bridge, the Edmond Rice Bridge, and will travel into the Diocese of Ossery.

We queued up at Garryvoe in East Cork on Christmas morning to park our car.  I wondered had I hibernated for six months and awoken in a different season.  When it was our turn to go we had to park the car three quarters way down the promenade and walk back to the hub of the activity.  This was not a normal day; the swimmers were all going to swim for charity.

We got out of the car wrapped in our winter woollies and fleece lined jackets.  A strong wind was blowing, bringing with it the rain and the cold.  We were greeted by people wrapped in towels.  Many had Santa hats on and towels wrapped around them.  I felt the odd one out with my jacket keeping me warm and dry.

There was no hanging around.  They were on a mission and that was to do what they were paid to do, get wet.  The Irish lifeboat service was one of several charities represented at Garryvoe this Christmas morning.  The banter was good humoured but their reason for being there was serious.

In 2010, when many were sitting down to their Christmas dinner the crew of the Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat launched to assist three persons who had become stranded on the island off Ballycotton pier by the incoming tide.  Ralph Gunn is one of many who happily give up an hour on Christmas Day for this well needed charity.  Who knows when you or a friend or even a member of your family will need to call on this service?  The Irish lifeboat service depends on donations and fundraising events to operate this free service.  Ballycotton in East Cork is one of over forty RNLI lifeboat stations throughout Ireland who are on standby 24 / 7 and they are very thankful for all the support they have received in 2011.
