This week, Thursday 8 December at Tallow Community Centre, Brideview Drama pushes on to stage their great hospital comedy for Christmas, ‘Nil by Mouth’, directed by John Roche (great to see him back in the director’s chair!).

Written by John Chapman, the play is a fun 4 nights’ entertainment. All about a bunch of useless patients trying desperately to survive what must be the worst run medical facility in Ireland, Nil by Mouth is a family-friendly evening of mistakes, farce, pratfalls and confusion.

The Cast of Brideview Drama at rehearsals of “Nil By Mouth” – Louise O’Connor, Sarah Curley, Helen Aherne, Donal Howard, Pat Smith, Anne Tobin, Liam Roche, Fiona Keane and, in front, Brian Livingston and Martin Sheehan.

As so often with Brideview Drama, there are many new faces on stage, and the show welcomes Louise O’Connor of Tallow (channelling her inner Ian Paisley as a grumpy Northern matron), Fiona Keane of Fermoy (as a fresh-faced and very fetching American nurse), Liam Roche of Kilwatermoy (bumbling about in the throes of a drug-induced confusion), and Gary Gill (as a totally zonked out patient).

Anne Tobin, Paddy Smith, Martin Sheehan, Donal Howard, Brian Livingston, Helen Aherne, Veronica Henley and Sarah Curley return to the company, driving the show forward through all the mayhem. Anne is a scary government inspector, Helen is the clueless main patient, Paddy is the tall handsome doctor, Donal plays a concussed patient sure he’s about to do a Roy Keane for Brideview United, Sarah is easily the nation’s best looking nurse, Martin rushes manically about as Joe the Porter, Brian keeps tripping over him as another Porter, while Veronica beautifully bosses everyone about as Matron Dowling.

Also new to Brideview Drama, up in the lighting box we welcome Shane Roche of Kilwatermoy, who’ll be spinning the sound while pushing the buttons, alongside the ever-capable Matthew Kavanagh. There are lots of really interesting props on stage, so the club would especially like to thank St Patrick’s Community Hospital of Fermoy and Goalpost Ireland Engineering of Tallow.

Suitable for all ages, Nil By Mouth starts at 8.15PM each night, with doors opening at 7.30pm. Tallow Community Centre is a very comfortable theatre, so all are welcome on Thursday and Friday, December 8 and 9; then Thursday and Saturday nights, 15 and 17 December.

As ever with Brideview Drama, the refreshments are free and include wine, nibbles and soft-drinks. There’s lots of seating, so come along and enjoy the show.

Cork Snooker – By Derek Kiely

THE Cork under 16 individual snooker championships were held last Sunday at Youghal CYMS and there was a very good entry with the Crucible, Douglas snooker club and the host club Youghal well represented in the magnificent surroundings of the Market House.

Derek Kiely reports

Derek Kiely reports

After some exciting snooker it was a bit of Youghal dominance throughout really in a club renowned for its strength at under age snooker came through with Youghal CYMS player Adam Fitzgerald beating fellow club man Noel Landers in the semi final.

Meanwhile the Crucibles Shane Hourihan met tournament favourite Aaron Tobin from Youghal CYMS in the other semi final. Tobin proved too good for Hourihan wining by two frames to nil.

In the final Tobin was just too good for Fitzgerald and went on to win the tournament without dropping a frame. Tobin a former National champion at under age level is truly a wonderful talent and hopefully soon he will be back in the green, white and orange of the Republic of Ireland team.

In regional snooker the West Section Intermediate snooker championships were held in the Crucible Snooker Club.

The final featured two players in terrific form at the moment, David Cassidy from the Crucible and Lloyd Myers from the AOH. Eventually Cassidy was victorious with a three frames to nil win. Sean Burns from the Crucible beat Derek Kiely from Youghal CYMS by three frames to two frames in the final of the plate.

Jimmy and James Hussey and his family must be complimented for the very warm welcome to everyone on the day and the hall itself was in fantastic shape. Hopefully with ranking tournaments finding their way back down south more and more Cork based players will come back to competitive snooker and even though Cork snooker is thriving at the moment the more that play the better, young and old alike.

Speaking of ranking events in Cork, Douglas snooker club will host the National Finals of the under 19’s and under and under 21’s and maybe more local cue-men will support further events. Also at Douglas snooker club ‘The Baby Lexie O’Riordan’ snooker tournament fund-raiser will be held in Douglas Snooker Club which will be held over the coming weeks.

The competition is organised by Karl and Martin Busteed and there is an appeal for support from anyone who wants to help by donating spot prizes. You can contact Douglas snooker club at 021-4891203 check it out on the Douglas Snooker Club Facebook page.

In the Cork Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA) Cork league the Youghal CYMS ‘A’ side keep going with another win to keep their 100% record in tact with a win away at Douglas, meanwhile the Crucible also on a 100% perfect record of wins this year in the league had an away win at Youghal CYMS ‘B’ and these two sides look unbeatable at the moment, but something has to give tomorrow night when both sides meet in Youghal before the Christmas break.

This game should be a cracker with each clubs top players competing at the highest level in the national rankings, it is a very difficult match to call and it could go either way. Both Youghal CYMS and the Crucible are already qualified for the semi finals, the question now is, who will join them there?

Youghal CYMS ‘B’, the AOH and Douglas ‘A’ will now face into a real dogfight for those remaining two spots.

The news that the ‘Munster Snooker Club Championships’ in Killarney have been brought forward by one week has not gone down very well with everyone involved in the game here in Cork, because it now clashes with an under 21, 19 and Masters event scheduled for the same weekend. The tournament is to be played the weekend of Friday the 20th, Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd of January. There will be an appeal to have this looked at and maybe RIBSA may solve the problem for Killarney by changing the date set for the ranking points events that are to be held that weekend.

David Stanton, Fine Gael TD for Cork East has welcomed the decision by Irish Distillers – Pernod Ricard to create a total of 280 jobs at Midleton Distillery.  These jobs will result from the decision to invest €100 million in expanding the production site in Midleton.

“I am very pleased that Midleton Distillery is going to benefit from such a large investment.  I understand that this will entail the creation of 30 new permanent jobs in the manufacturing plant in Midleton, and also another 30 at the bottling plant in Dublin.

David Stanton TD

“In addition to the 30 permanent posts, the planned expansion of the distillery will require 250 construction workers during the 18 month construction phase.  This amount of jobs will be a huge boost for Midleton and East Cork as a whole which, like most areas across the country, have seen a large increase in unemployment in the last couple of years.

“The success of the Jameson brand is a real good news story for Midleton where whiskey has been produced for over 185 years.  I understand that the investment is required to expand the plant as it is already operating at full capacity.  The expansion will allow Irish Distillers to continue to meet the ever increasing demand for Jameson worldwide.

“I imagine that the increase in production capacity and employment at the Midleton plant should also have a knock on effect in generating employment for other local business. Farmers, hauliers and other ancillary businesses should benefit as well as local tourism as the Jameson brand becomes known to an ever wider international market.

THE YOUGHAL RNLI was launched for the second time in a week on Thursday 1st December at 13:47. It went to the aid a 20ft fishing vessel with 3 persons on board that had broken down with engine failure 2 miles south of Black Ball Head. Weather conditions were calm at the time.

The Youghal Lifeboat The Patricia Jennings with its volunteer crew Patsy O’ Mahony, Thomas Cliffe and helmsman John Griffin Jnr arrived on scene and established a tow.  The fishing vessel along with the 3 casualties were towed safely to the Shipping Quay in Youghal where the Lifeboat handed over to the Youghal Coast Guard. Sinn Féin TD for Cork East, Sandra McLellan, has claimed the ambulance service in the HSE South area is at breaking point and that the planned reconfiguration of the service will drive it over the edge.

Sinn Féin TD for Cork East, Sandra McLellan - "Ambulance service at breaking point in HSE South"

Sinn Féin TD for Cork East, Sandra McLellan - "Ambulance service at breaking point in HSE South"

Speaking in response to leaked HSE memos Deputy McLellan said:

“Internal HSE memos revealed by the Corkman this week confirm that there were several instances when areas in Cork were left without adequate ambulance cover due to new work directives. The HSEs answer to this appears to be to ask ambulance crew to routinely cover on-call after already working a 16 hour day. This is completely outrageous and in direct contradiction to earlier instruction issued in May.”

“It beggars belief that the HSE would expect ambulance staff to be in any fit state to deliver appropriate care after such a long day. The role paramedics play in the pre-emergency care of patients is vital. I have said from the outset that the HSEs plan to reconfigure ambulance services is seriously flawed. I have called on the Government and the HSE to invest in the ambulance fleet and in ambulance personnel. The recruitment embargo continues to have a devastating effect on the service.”

“This series of internal communications highlights the fact that the service is at breaking point, with insufficient staff and an inappropriate skills mix to deliver the service in the new dispensation. That the HSE would even contemplate reconfiguring the service without addressing these deficiencies is life threatening.”
