Youghal Mackerel Festival begins This Friday 31st August

YOUGHAL looks set to host another fabulous weekend and the weather forecast for the event is great!. This time it’s a celebration of all things fishy but especially the faithful mackerel. At this time of year hundreds flock to Youghal to catch the tasty fish from the towns quays and beaches. This year the town will celebrate the humble mackerel with a food extravaganza and entertainment program second to none

Valerie Dollard, Isidoro Girasole, Luigi, Mohamed Ali, Norman McDonald and Jacqui Yates show some of the mackerel canapes at the Youghal Mackerel Food Festival 2011.

On Friday night the festival will open with free outdoor trad sessions in the town centre. Martin Shanahan of RTE will then launch the fish trail running throughout the town. Restaurants will offer free taster mackerel starters along the trail and many will offer discounts on all fish dishes. Taste Mackerel as you never have before – with Italian flavours, Spanish flavours, historic flavours, barbecued and as sushi.

Saturday and Sunday promises more from the mackerel as the town’s chefs have cook outs in the town centre. Tasting the result is again part of the experience. Lots of kids fun scheduled too. A beach volleyball competition will run on Saturday at the towns smaller central beach. Free street music forms part of the programme throughout the weekend. The festival will conclude with a free concert at the magnificent St Mary’s collegiate music venue. No rain worries either as alternate indoor locations have been planned for all events.
