THE YOUGHAL METHODIST CHURCH is a community of people who are drawn together by God’s love as they know it, expressed in the story of Jesus – his birth and life, teaching, suffering, death and resurrection. We seek to follow the way of Jesus and live to share God’s love through action and word in the world. Because this experience of Jesus Christ has so shaped our lives, we invite others to share in the love, life and hope that is freely given to us.
A fascinating scroll, on display at the back of the church and reproduced gives an outline of the history of Methodism in Youghal. The work was first established in 1739 and Charles Wesley visited Youghal in 1748. John Wesley paid the first of 5 visits in 1762, the last being in 1787.when he was 84 years old.The first Chapel was built in 1792, this was replaced by the Chapel Lane Church in 1833 and this, in turn, was replaced by the present Friar Street Church in 1880.
The beautiful stained-glass windows in the church were made by” Watsons” from Youghal, they were internationally famed for their art and craftmanship. More recently (2003) the congregation in Youghal developed a vision which entailed the renovation of the church hall, The hall is used by the church and wider community for various activities.
Mr. Desmond Davis was appointed as lay pastor in September 2008 and he has quickly gained the respect and affection of members of the congregation and the wider community.
The Church has a very fine Pipe Organ which was installed by Organ Builders T W Magahy in the early part of the last Century. Having been in constant use for over one hundred years the organ required a major overhaul in 2011. The Church consulted with several organ builders and finally contracted with Kennith Jones & Associates to restore the organ to its original condition. This was a major undertaking which involved the dismantling and removal of the organ to the builders. The contract was completed and the organ has been fully restored in its original form.
