On Friday night last, (5th Oct 2012) we travelled to Brian Dillions GAA, for the East Cork Girls Under 14 Football Final. A large crowd had travelled to witness the Youghal girls take on a team who had beaten them once already this season, so we all knew that this was going to be a tight affair. Without fail and as predicted, this is what we got as the Youghal and Mayfield teams went at it right from the off. Mayfield got the brightest start with a well worked goal within the first five minutes. Instead of Mayfield building on this goal it was the Youghal girls who reacted the best by taking some excellent points and a superb goal taken by Catriona O’Keefe. Throughout the first half, magnificent individual battles were taking place all over the pitch, but it was Youghal who came in at half time leading on a score line of 1 – 03 to 1 – 01.
The second half continued at the same intensity as the first had finished. Both teams were giving their all knowing that only their best on this occasion would win this final. Mayfield were putting the Youghal rearguard under immense pressure, but the girl’s stood up to all that was thrown at them. This was important as with our forwards keeping the scoreboard ticking over with well taken points and a fine goal by Ciara Crowley, we needed to be sure and keep the Mayfield attempts to a minimum. We were succeeding in our efforts up until the last couple of minutes when Mayfield went ahead with some well taken scores. The Youghal girl’s at this point showed some great character and determination when in a great move, starting from the backs, through the midfield and into the hands of Clodagh O’Keefe who buried the ball to the net. This was to be the defining score of the game and Youghal finished worthy winners on a score line of 3 – 04 to 2 – 05.
