THE AILBRIN SOCIETY is pleased to present a multimedia talk “Social Life in a Garrison Town”.
Memories of the army, the officers and soldiers are part of the folk memory of the people of Youghal and permeate the songs, folklore, literature and buildings. The big houses tended to provide the officers and the small houses provided the ‘cannon fodder’. The talk will explore the story of some of the soldiers and their background.
Kieran Groeger has been a teacher of history since 1973 and is an active member of Youghal Celebrates History for the past ten years. In 2012, his tourism booklet’ Youghal Heritage Trail’ was published.
The talk will be on Wednesday, 20th February at 8.30 pm in the Walter Raleigh Hotel, Youghal. Admission: members free; non-members E5. New members always welcome.
