DEIS School cutbacks must be reversed – McLellan

Cork East TD Sandra McLellan has described plans by the Minister for Education to cut funding for disadvantaged and vulnerable pupils as ‘an assault on the fabric of Irish society’ and called for the immediate reversal of proposed cuts to pupil-teacher ratios.

Speaking on a Sinn Féin motion opposing the cuts Deputy McLellan said:

“The cuts to DEIS schools announced in the budget deserve particular attention not only because of the devastating effect that they will have on those children who are directly covered by the scheme, but in the broader sense, having an appreciation of the role of education, to Irish society as a whole. The very children who need the most intensive educational support with regard to literacy and numeracy will be affected the most by the proposed measures.”

“This state has, at times, had nothing less than a shameful record on education. Those children born into disadvantage were always the ones to bear the brunt. A two tier education system continues to exist in this state and schemes which went some way towards addressing it, like the DEIS scheme or free third level education are being hollowed out.”

“Equality of opportunity is what DEIS is all about. It is, at its very essence, about fairness. It’s about giving each child who through whatever quirk of geography, genetics, environment or circumstance has found themselves, from a very early age, at a disadvantage, a chance to reach their full potential. To play a full, active, positive role in society. I am calling on the Minister to immediately reverse the cuts to pupil-teacher ratios announced in the recent budget.”

THE AILBRIN SOCIETY is presenting a talk ” IRISH WALLED TOWNS & YOUGHAL’S CONTRIBUTION” by the archaeologist, Catherine Desmond on Wednesday, January 18th at 8.30 pm at the Red Store, North Main Street, Youghal. Admission: Members free; non-members 5E. New members always welcome.

YOUGHAL’S TOWN WALLS are over 700 years old, having witnessed centuries of history and generations of locals come and go. They are the second longest walls in Ireland after those of Derry.

KGK HERITAGE SOCIETY

Happy New Year and hoping you all had a great Christmas; well it’s that time of year again, New Years Resolutions, why not add joining the heritage society to your list, read on and learn more about what we’ve been undertaking.
December 15th we had another exciting meeting with lots of work done and more enlightening stories told.

Pat Casey thanked the X-Factor for allowing him the chance to escape to a quieter undisturbed room while the women of the house had their dose, like the rest of the country, of the popular TV series. With his laptop, 1854-1991 marriage records, 1833-1853 Baptismal records and the 1901 and 1911 Census records of our area, Pat put the head down and diligently recorded all of the information in excel format. This was no small task to undertake and no doubt we and generations to come will be most appreciative to Pat as we can now easily find and view the information we require. If you wish to view the Baptismal or marriage records, approval must first be sought from Fr. Condon.
Mike O’Neill plans to clean up the bridges in our area and document the history of them. Mike would be happy to hear from you if you’ve any knowledge of the local bridges.
Frank Mills has kindly compiled a list of interesting local sites from holy wells to underground tunnels! Each of the sites in time will be researched more closely.
We are hoping for our next meeting on Thursday February 2nd to discuss and bring together information regarding the local churches-Fountain, Kilcockan, Knockanore, Glendine and Kilwatermoy. Anyone with information or know where we can find out more about them, we’d love for you to inform us or better still come along to the meeting.
Old photographs are a must for our group to salvage but more importantly to remember the names of the people departed and their stories that are now left only to be seen in black and white. With your permission we will scan and copy your photos so you keep the original precious memories. For now if you’d take a look in your old photo albums and attic. We’ll organise an evening in the next month or two for you to bring them along to a meeting.
Pat Geary’s list of Heritage Sources and web sites with historical information is getting longer. There is information from school reunions to the I.T.A Topographical and General Survey of Knockanore Parish 1943. Pat is happy to share his knowledge and likewise to learn more to add to the list.
Tom Roche delighted us with his insightful stories and knowledge and even more so when he showed us an 1881 Land League membership Card.
The KGK Heritage Society would like to sincerely thank all those attending the meetings and bringing their knowledge to the fore. We would also like to remind you that the meetings are open to all and we’d welcome your input. Our next meeting is Thursday 2nd February 8.30pm in the KGK Community Sports Hall where we’ll also decide and remember our motto!

Gallery FRIDA would like to thank all who has helped us making Gallery FRIDA a new place for art in Youghal and we would like to thank all who has come by and visited the Gallery. There has been a very good response to the 20 artists from all over Ireland who exhibited there work at “Summer in December”.
The raffle went very well and we are happy to be able to send around €250 to the orphanage project TORO BABIES in Uganda.

The winner of the raffle was picked by Sheila Loughnane and the lucky winner of the painting “Setanta” by Lora Murphy is John Roche. Gallery FRIDA wishes all a happy new year and Welcome back for new exhibition in 2012.

Memorial Committee pursuing the erection of a Memorial to Victims of Institutional Abuse

The Memorial Committee is pursuing the erection of a Memorial to victims of institutional abuse as recommended in the Ryan Report.

A budget of up to €0.5 million is being set aside for the project.

Following a consultation process with survivor groups and interested parties the Committee launched the competition at the end of July with a closing date of 13th October 2011.

This first stage of the competition process invited expressions of interest outlining the concepts/approach by the applicants of the nature, medium and format through which the memorial is to be delivered.

Thirty two expressions of interest were received. The jury for the competition comprised the Memorial Committee and

Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence against Children;
Brian O’ Doherty, New York based, Irish born artist, sculptor and film maker;
Pat Cooney, Principal Architect, Office of Public Works (OPW), and
Vivienne Roche, sculptor and co-founder National Sculpture Factory, Cork.

Having examined the thirty two submissions, the jury selected a shortlist of six competitors to proceed to Stage 2 of the competition, when those selected will provide more detailed and specific proposals for each stage of the design, planning and realisation of the Memorial.

The Committee expects to be in a position to announce the competition winner in June 2012.

Eucharistic Congress Bell Visits Youghal

THE EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS PILGRIMAGE BELL was welcomed into the Parish of Youghal on Monday last, December 26th and remained in the Parish until Tuesday December 27th. All those living in the Parish of Youghal, Killeagh and Ballymacoda and surrounding areas joined in one or more of the following scheduled events, which were all well attended and very successful.

On Tuesday 27th December 2011 after Mass at St. Mary's Parish Church, Youghal, The Eucharistic Congress Bell Pilgrimage continued with a procession of the Bell through the streets of Youghal. The Bell arrived at the old Youghal Stone Bridge at 3pm where a fitting service of prayer and hymns was led by Fr. Patrick Winkle from Youghal and Fr. Paul Waldron from Dungarvan.

On Monday, December 26th a Reception for the Bell was held at 12.30pm in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, The Strand, followed immediately by Mass for St Stephen’s Day. That evening at 5.30pm Evening Prayer and Carols was held. At 8.30pm prayers with the Icons and Night Prayer saw the first day come to a close.

Tuesday, December 27th commenced at 9.30am with a recitation of the Rosary in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, followed at 10am by the celebration of Mass. After Mass the congregation walked with the Bell and Icons into the town and arrived at St Mary’s Parish Church before noon, where prayers were said and carols sung.

The Bell and Icons were handed over to the Dioceses of Waterford and Lismore at the Stone Bridge in Youghal.

Despite the cold, a very large group of people from the Parish of Youghal came out to escort them on the journey from the Parish Church and into the welcoming hands of Fr. Paul Waldron, Diocese of Waterford and Lismore, Fr. Gerard O’Connor, PP, Aglish and Fr. Michael Cullinan, PP, Lismore.

The Bell arrived at the old Youghal Stone Bridge where a fitting service of prayer and hymns was led by Fr. Patrick Winkle from Youghal and Fr. Paul Waldron from Dungarvan.

Carols were sung by the Clashmore Choir, and people got the opportunity to personally ring the Congress Bell. Gardaí from the Parish of Youghal and West Waterford were on hand to ensure the safety of the ‘pilgrims’ and keep the traffic flowing freely.

The organisation and arrangements made by the people of the Parish of Youghal, and in particular the enormous amount of work put in by Fr. Patrick Winkle, are to be lauded. The Congress Bell and Icons paid just a quick visit to Youghal, but their presence was felt by all who came along during the two days to view and ring the Bell which, in June 2012, will be a VIP at the International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin.

The Bell, handed over at the Stone Bridge in Youghal, will remain in the Diocese of Waterford, visiting twenty two Parishes, until January 8th next when it will leave Waterford by yet another bridge, the Edmond Rice Bridge, and will travel into the Diocese of Ossery.

Christmas Crib At St. Raphael’s Chapel, Youghal.

The Crib at St. Raphael’s will be open to the public from Christmas Day onwards between 10am and 5pm. Please come along and say a prayer. Fr. Joe McGuane, Chaplain St. Raphael’s Centre will celebrate The Christmas Day Mass at 10am and Christmas Carols will be sung by The St. Raphael’s Staff Choir.

The Crib in St. Raphael’s Church, Youghal, has always been a place to visit for the people of the town and surrounding areas and much work has gone in to the building of this magnificent structure by the staff of St. Raphael’s Centre, who have dedicated many hours on the decorating of The Nativity scene for the adoration of the birth of Jesus for the people of the town.
Youghal people in times past fondly remember praying at the crib and taken a strand of straw from the Manger as a memento of this most Holiest occasion on the birth of Jesus. Many churches leave the manger empty (without the baby Jesus) until Christmas Day to reflect that Jesus has not yet been born before then.
