Ailbrin Society Youghal presents “A Little Night Music” with John Kennedy

“A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC” – to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day, the Ailbrin Society presents a musical evening with John Kennedy. John is well known to the many listeners of CRY and we look forward to an entertaining and informative evening. It will be held on Wednesday, 15th February at 8.30 pm in the Red Store, North Main Street, Youghal. Members free; non-members 5E. New members always welcome.

John Kennedy from Community Radio Youghal presented a wonderful evening of music and nostalgia entitled ” The sound of greatness” celebrating the World famous Irish tenor Count John McCormack at The Walter Raleigh Hotel as special guest of The Youghal Ailbrin Society.

People often ask what is Ailbrin? It is a small society that hosts a series of talks on a variety of subjects, from September to April on the third Wednesday of the month. The name Ailbrin is the oldest known Irish name for Youghal and means wooded rock.

The talks cover a wide range of subjects from local history, current affairs, travel, art, music, architecture to deep sea diving. Many of the most popular talks with the public have been given by local speakers.

The society was founded in 1966 by Noel Mc Namara a local solicitor, as a discussion group. Michael Murray acted as Chairperson in its early years. Members met once a month in the Devonshire Arms Hotel and as the speakers were friends and the room was free there was no fee.

After some years the Society expanded, speakers were brought in from outside to broaden our horizons. All this activity involved more expenses, fees for speakers, room rental and inevitably insurance. It also required a hard working and dedicated committee, most of whom have given several years and much of their time to keeping the show on the road. What we now need are more members interested in helping the present committee. At a meeting on Monday September 17th, a discussion was held on whether or not to continue with the society’s activities, the present committee has agreed to stay on until April of next year.

I am organising a fundraiser in aid of Cork Dog Action Welfare Group Jan 21st Youghal G.A.A. Club “Gigi’s The Sequel”… and would be very obliged if you could put the ad on YoughalOnline.com. Cork DAWG is an organisation founded and run mostly by a network of volunteers concerned with the welfare of abandoned, abused and ill-treated dogs in Cork.
Through our collective experience we aim to improve the lives of Cork’s dogs and also endeavour to educate the public on dog welfare and dog ownership. To do this, we need your help….

It is a great cause and I hope to raise a good bit of money for them as the group who have a shop in Midleton and a sanctuary in Ballinagree Macroom. They do endless work of re homing stray and lost dogs and re-uniting pets with owners and never turn an animal away.

Many supporters of Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat look forward to their annual fundraising event at Ballymaloe House early in the New Year. Around this time of year their thoughts go to booking their tickets and supporting this worthy cause.

Phil Coulter has been a great supporter of the RNLI lifeboat service in Ireland for many years. What many people don’t know is that he was in Ballycotton when, going down the hill to the pier, past the lifeboat house and onto the steps leading up to the storm wall that runs along the length of the pier, the final verse of Home from the Sea came to him.

The Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat fundraising committee are organising their annual event in the impressive Grain Store at Ballymaloe House on Wednesday, 8 February 2012, and Phil Coulter has kindly agreed to act as host. Tickets are €65 and are available from the organising committee. Enquiries can be made by ringing 087 4151475 or via email to ballycottonrnli14@eircom.net. These tickets would make a wonderful Christmas present, with something to look forward to in the New Year and supporting the Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat at the same time.

The organisers are thrilled that Phil Coulter will be hosting the event and are thankful for the continued support of management and staff at Ballymaloe House. They hope the event will be well supported and will be a good start to their fundraising efforts in 2012 for the vital RNLI lifeboat service at Ballycotton.

Youghal invited to celebrate return of restored church organ – By Christy Parker

YOUGHAL METHODIST CHURCH is inviting the wider to community to join ‘Come Celebrate and Sing,’ an evening of carols and recitals celebrating the restoration of their church organ. The night, will take place in Methodist Church, Friar Street on Wednesday December 14th.

The organ in question is a two-manual (keyboard) Megahy pneumatic instrument, constructed by the legendary Cork organ builders of the same name, over 100 years ago. Its façade carries 75 pipes with very many more behind it. For half its life it would have been operated by hand pump before an electric motor was installed.

However the years took their toll and earlier this year the melodious monument fell into some disrepair. As the Megahy firm no longer trades, the Church recruited organ builders Kenneth Jones & Associates of Kilcoole in Co. Wicklow to conduct repairs. “The work took about three months to complete in Wicklow and we are extremely happy to see the organ restored to its splendid, original form,” says Gordon Good, who carries the title of Property Steward for the Youghal church.

The restoration cost ran into tens of thousands of euros and was met by private benefactors. It is regarded as money well spent. There is pride and admiration in Gordon’s voice when he quotes the restorers’ summary that describes the organ as “almost all pipe work of spotted metal, which is superb for organ pipe construction and gives finest quality and tone.” That description alone transcends religious relevance and casts the organ into the realms of valuable Youghal heritage.

The upcoming ‘welcome home’ celebration will bring the talents of Ian Sexton to the keyboard in a cross-denomination exercise. Ian is the Organist & Master of The Clerks Choral of Youghal’s Collegiate Church of Saint Mary the Virgin. He also tutors at the Department of Music, UCC and director of a mixed voice chamber choir dedicated to repertoire before 1750.

On a night on which some readings may also be shared, the attendance will further have an opportunity to donate to the Youghal St, Vincent de Paul Society as they leave the church. “We hope the townspeople in general will come and share what will be a joyful night, just eleven days before Christmas,” invites Gordon.

Come Celebrate and Sing is at the Methodist Church, Friar Street on Wednesday December 14th ,f commencing at 8 pm.

Last year seen an audience of 300 or more come to encourage and support the Youth from the community and around.
A DVD of the show along with a cd was released and is testament to the exceptional talent abounding within the youth and the success of this project

COMMUNITY RADIO YOUGHAL held there 3rd Annual Country Music awards on Monday 21st November 2011 in the local GAA cente. There was a fantastic crowd on the night with people traveling from all over to see there favourite stars of Country Music on stage. The beautiful glass plaque awards were designed by Yewcraft based in Ballymacoda.

Mayor calls for clubs and organisations to come together for 2013 Tourism Initiative to help Youghal prosper.

THE MAYOR OF YOUGHAL, EOIN COYNE, would like to extend an open invitation to all clubs (sporting and otherwise), associations, voluntary organisations and interested members of the public within the town of Youghal to attend an information meeting in relation to Ireland’s 2013 tourism initiative titled “The Gathering”, which takes place in the Mall Arts Centre, Youghal Town Hall on Wednesday the 30th of November at 7.30pm.

The Gathering, which was announced by Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar, is being labelled as a global Irish “homecoming” which has been billed as the biggest tourism initiative ever staged in Ireland. The Gathering will be a year-long event in 2013 and the Government is anticipating it will attract as many as 325,000 extra visitors into Ireland. Minister for Tourism Leo Varadkar described it as an “invitation to the world to come and join in Ireland’s renewal”.

“It’s about getting communities, local authorities and sports clubs and families behind the whole concept, and getting actively involved and inviting people to come, and organizing specific events for that purpose”, said the Minister.

It is my hope that Youghal, as a community will take a unified approach in coming up with ideas and concrete plans into ensuring we prosper to our full potential from this initiative.

It is said that if the event can meet its targets it could be worth €220m in extra tourism revenue for Ireland. It is imperative that Youghal can as one whole community can work together in putting forward a cohesive plan that will enhance the town’s tourism potential and I believe that this is the perfect opportunity for us to achieve this.

It is my belief and my hope that EVERY organisation within the town will buy into this initiative and within five months, when “The Gathering” is due to be officially launched on St. Patricks Day 2012, we as a community, inclusive to all, can be steps ahead of other towns in Ireland in putting plans together for 2013.

I look forward to welcoming you to the Town Hall on the 30th of November next where I hope to explain in greater detail about what is hoped to be achieved. Shane Supple 60,000 hits on YouTube and rising

Its not often we can talk about a local musician, singer, songwriter on YoughalOnline. However today we can. Its come to the attention of YoughalOnline that local man Shane Supple has received over 60,000 hits on his YouTube video “I want you to want me”. Such is the popularity of this song that it has featured on SKY TV’s Hot Country and Hot Country Extra several times over the last few months.

Click on the video below to see Shane singing “Lifetime Guarantee”. The video was filmed and produced by Blue Shed Productions and has had a massive 60,000 hits on the You Tube Music Video Section and is still climbing!

For anyone who does not know Shane he is the son of local singing legend Art Supple and Shane has been writing songs for a number of years now. We have run articles before on this local talent and when he launched his album last year Country Style Blues we wrote an article about it promising bigger and better things for Shane

To top it all off the latest news in is that two of Shane’s songs have been shortlisted for awards Already this year the first song “Lifetime Guarantee” which was recorded by Mick Flavin was on the Irish Country Album of the year 2010. This song has now been shortlisted for an award in Germany for one of the most requested songs on Country Radio there. His second song “The Highway Song” has been used on a top gear style TV show in Asia has been nominated as well for a top award.

Shane has a popular following online and his myspace account boasts almost 5500 fans. His songs there, getting over 3,750 plays.His facebook page again has almost 1800 friends and fans alike. On YouTube his songs in total have generated over 90,000 hits. On ReverbNation he has over 6,800 fans and he has remained at number one in the cork country charts for over a year. It goes to show That Shane is not just local he is global and while the world of the Internet is fairly new Shane has managed to intergrate himself online quite well.

Shane has won numerous awards over the years from local radio in Youghal to radio station around the world for his songs and has been interviewed on a lot of stations here in Ireland and the UK. His songs are in great demand with many top singers here in ireland using them. Currently Shane is writing a selection of songs for a movie which will be filmed next year. He has co written many songs over the years with local and international artists and so far has been able to remain under the radar, but with this latest word of succes and good news it wont be long before he to will become a very successful songwriter.

Shane is fairly modest about his songwriting and if you listen in to his radio program on Youghal Radio each week you can hear him promoting local bands, singers, songwriters, groups from all over Ireland, He doesn’t use this to promote any of his own music in fact he quite often refuses to play his own songs. His excuse, this program is not about me its about those listening in and the guests I have on. For just over a year he wrote an article in the East Cork Journal promoting the same bands from his radio show. I think its time we noticed not just the work he does in promoting Irish music but we notice his own body of work which speaks for itself.

East Cork Choirs for Hope

THE HOLY TRINITY CAPUCHIN CHURCH situated on Fr Mathew Quay in the heart of Cork City will provide a spectacular venue for the upcoming charity concert in aid of Hope Foundation. This exciting musical event will take place on Thursday November 17th at 8.15 pm. For many years now the Hope Foundation has been working with some of the most disadvantaged children in the world. Hope continues to rescue thousands of children from the streets and slums of Calcutta. Now more than ever before they need our help.

Some of East Corks top musical talent comes together on the night to present an uplifting program of music in the heavenly acoustics of Holy Trinity.

Cantemus, directed by Tomás Ó Tuama, is a chamber choir with a wide ranging repertoire from early Christian to contemporary. This choir has been successfully competing in The Cork Choral Festival since 2007. It was awarded National Choir of The Year and winner of The Sacred Music Competition at the Navan Choral Festival in 2011.

Ilse De Ziah will be performing a selection of pieces on solo cello. Ilse is a Baroque and folk musician, and composer. She is currently leader of the cellist section of Cork Symphony Orchestra.

The Kiltha Tones, a male voice choir directed by Ursula Muckley, will add to the eclectic nature of the evening with music from around the world.

Castlemartyr Choir, directed by Tómas Ó Tuama will open the concert. This choir is no stranger to Holy Trinity. It won The Sacred Music Competition here at Feis Maitiú in 2011.

This upcoming event gives us all a chance to enjoy a great evening of choral and baroque music in a beautiful, spiritual and acoustic venue while helping a really worthy cause.
