JIMMY SAVILE “brought a little bit of magic and sparkle to everybody that he met”, mourners at his funeral service were told yesterday. Savile will be buried today following more public ceremonials in Scarborough, the North Yorkshire seaside town he loved and where he had a home. Savile, who presented the first episode of Top Of The Pops, was found dead at his flat in Roundhay, Leeds, just two days before his 85th birthday. He raised millions for charity and ran more than 200 marathons in support of good causes.
Jim’ll Fix It was a long-running British television show, broadcast by the BBC between 1975 and 1994. It was presented by Jimmy Savile.
The show debuted on 31 May 1975, and ran until July 1994, in the Saturday teatime slot. It was devised and hosted by the late Jimmy Savile, who would “fix it” for the wishes of several viewers (usually children) to come true each week.
The standard format was that the viewer’s letter, which described their wish, would be shown on the screen and read out aloud by the letter’s writer, although initially Savile himself read the letters. This would be followed with a quick chat between Jimmy and the letter writer, where they would discuss the wish.
The wish would then be enacted (either live in the studio or shown in a pre-recorded format, which usually consisted of a segment recorded on film), and finally the viewer would be presented with a medal which had the words “Jim fixed it for me” engraved on it.
Occasionally, other people featured in the ‘Fix It’ (actors from well known series, for example), might also give the viewer an extra gift somehow relating to the Fix. Savile himself played no part in the filming or recording of the ‘fix-its’, unless specifically requested as part of the letter writer’s wish.
Back in 1984 the late Michael McCarthy from the Youghal Pipe Band wrote to the Jim’ll Fix It programme asking if Jim’ll Fix It so that the pipe band could be on the tv as a request from his father, Duis McCarthy. Jim indeed fixed it for the Youghal Pipe Band and the BBC team duly arrived in town to film the pipers in different location around Youghal and nearby Ardmore. Youghal priest Fr. Tom Paul Geary and Michael McCarthy went to the BBC studios where they received the famous Jim’ll Fix It medal on St. Patrick’s Day 1984.

Rihanna ‘Not Impressed’ With North’s Agricultural Programme.
By Enda Long-Grass.
ROCK SINGER RIHANNA says she is “very disillusioned” with the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme following her recent trip to the province. The singer took time out during her Belfast concert tour to visit the countryside and investigate how the programme was developing. Unfortunately she was ordered from a field by an irate farmer during her explorations. “One of the stipulations in the 2009-13 Policy document is to ‘encourage diversification of economic activity’ but I didn’t experience anything like that,” says the disappointed singer. “I was testing a cross-cultural media initiative involving turnip-friendly film technology, that could increase turnover without risking subsidy deferment, but I was shown the gate and told to pull it out after me. I think the whole thing needs to be re-generated, preferably with a coinciding education programme for farmers. Right now I want nothing more to do with it.”
On a positive note the singer her faith in the Democratic Unionist Party remains unshaken despite party member Alan Graham disagreeing with her agriculture initiatives. “I still take my shir….er, cap off to Peter Robinson whose wife has long inspired me,” she says.
Veteran Photographer Focuses On Youghal To Aid African Famine Victims.
By Christy Parker
A SERIES OF STUNNING LANDSCAPES form a photographic exhibition in aid of Trocaire’s East Africa Famine Relief opening in Youghal Credit Union from Friday next (Sept 16th). ‘A Human Life’ features approximately 60 pictures by local, veteran photographer Bob Rock, who says they “depict the beauty of Youghal as never seen before.”

Several of the photos were taken either at dawn or at dusk and create portrayals of the town’s harbour, beaches and hillsides that blend nature and soul to leave an indelible impression on the viewer’s consciousness. “They are absolutely amazing. I’ve lived here all my life and have never seen photos to represent the town so magnificently,” says Youghal Credit Union manager Barry Treacy.
Most of these images have never been printed before “and as I’m now 76 years old, probably won’t be printed again!,” smiles Bob. “So it’s an opportunity to own something unique.” As an extra incentive, the photographs will retail at about half the normal price.
The images are mounted to 18”x 24” ready for framing and are printed on acid free paper using Canon’s Chromalife 100 Inks, meaning they can survive for 100 years behind glass. “They are easily removed from the mount for posting abroad, ” adds Bob.
Bob was moved to organise the exhibition by news footage of the starving families in Africa. “It is so tragic to see children and parents suffering like that,” he reflects. “I felt compelled to do something to help those unfortunate people.”
Jovial and sincere, Bob spent 50 years involved in photography, for 35 of which he recorded for posterity the happiest events in the lives of his community, including almost 2,000 weddings and “often for two generations of a family.”
Bob has exhibited in Dublin, London and Madrid, won silver and bronze medals from the “Photographic Society of Ireland,” was a finalist in the “Kodak Bride of the Year” and has six of his images in the “Best of Irish Professional Photography” archive. He retired from professional photography a decade ago, since when he has been documenting the Irish landscape. “I needed a break from faces” he jokes. Ironically the gaunt, suffering faces from distant Africa now prompt him to publicise his talents again.
A Human Face ruins from Friday September 16th for four weeks. Bob Rock’s work can also be viewed on www.bobrock.zenfolio.com.

Frankie Gavin & De Dannan (2009 onwards)
Frankie Gavin is one of the genuine legends of Irish music. From his first tv appearance playing the tin-whistle when he was seven, through sixteen albums with the seminal Dé Dannan, seven solo albums,
his adventures in the realms of Jazz, Gospel, and Klezmer, to appearances and recordings with such luminaries as Earl Scruggs, Stephane Grapelli, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, and The Rolling Stones, ‘the prince of Irish fiddlers’ is one of the outstanding performers of the past thirty years. In the past year alone Frankie Gavin and his band have played support to the Rolling Stones at Slane Castle, performed twice to a full to capacity Croke Park (during national sporting occasions), performed with the U.A.E. Philharmonic Orchestra in Dubai, performed with the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra during a ten week tour of the USA and performed at The White House for President Bush.
Part of Frankie Gavin’s enduring appeal lies in his astounding technical ability and unceasing quest for innovation – musical pieces more commonly associated with the like of the Beatles and George Frideric Handel are now common place in Frankie’s repertoire as an Irish musician. Most pertinent of all is the knack he has for imparting to his audience his own enthusiasm, the sheer joy, the magic of great music-making.
2009 will see Frankie Gavin back on the road and with new De Dannan members. The new line up will feature Frankie Gavin (Fiddle/Flute/Whistles), Damien Mullane (Accordian), Eric Cunningham (Percussion/Flutes/Whistles), Mike Galvin (Bouzouki/Guitar) and Michelle Lally (Vocals). The official launch of the new band took place at an exclusive concert at the 2200 capacity Royal Theatre & Events Centre in Castlebar on August 5th during The World Fleadh festival where many of the former members of the band came together with the new members for a celebration of the bands history.
‘Electrifying’ is an adjective that’s too often used to describe certain performances but this is one instance where it’s absolutely unavoidable. If you’ve never been lucky enough to see Frankie Gavin perform live, prepare to be… shocked.
