Youghal Cycling Club are pleased to announce that the 3rd Annual Vee Challenge will be held on Sunday, 12th August 2012. The event has grown in success from year to year with significant monies being raised for local charities.

This year Youghal Cycling Club are delighted to announce, that in 2012, we will be supporting local athlete Amanda Crotty in her preparations for the Paralympic Games later this year. Amanda, who has been visually impaired since birth, is a member of Youghal Athletic Club and the Irish Paralympic Team. As a visually impaired runner, she competes while tethered to a guide, who must always remain behind the athlete.

We are also delighted to announce that Cognex Corporation have continued their sponsorship of The Vee Challenge for 2012. Running a cycling sportiff has significant costs and recurring expenses. Having a main sponsor is a massive help to the Club and ensures maximum return of funds raised to the chosen recipients. Cognex Corporation designs, develops, manufactures and markets a range of products that incorporate sophisticated machine vision technology that gives them the ability to “see.” Cognex products include barcode readers, machine vision sensors and machine vision systems that are used in factories, warehouses and distribution centres around the world to guide, gauge, inspect, identify and assure the quality of items during the manufacturing and distribution process. Cognex is the world’s leader in the machine vision industry, having shipped more than 700,000 vision-based products, representing over $3 billion in cumulative revenue, since the company’s founding in 1981. Headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts, USA, Cognex has regional offices and distributors located throughout North America, Japan, Europe, Asia and Latin America. For details, visit Cognex on-line at http://www.cognex.com

<img class="size-full wp-image-41559" title="youghal_cycling_club_photo1" src="http://www.youghalonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/youghal_cycling_club_photo1.jpg" alt="Youghal athlete Amanda Crotty, who will compete in the Paralympic Games 2012 in London, pictured with Sean Lawlor, Chairman Youghal Cycling Club and Wayne Fitzgerald, Distribution Centre Manager, COGNEX LTD, Cork, Ireland.
In 2012 we will again offer two routes for riders. The 130km Vee Challenge which takes in the ascent of the Vee from Lismore and descending into Clogheen before climbing the Vee again through the Sheep’s Pass From here we head to the food stop on the road to Cappoquin. Refuelled the route will pass by the Blackwater Valley taking in the beautiful Dromana drive before heading for the coast and the final sting in the tail, at Monatrea, offering fantastic views of Youghal town.

The second option is the 90km Vee Ascent. This route covers most of the roads that the Vee Challenge incorporates with participants climbing the Vee as far as Glenaknockaun before turning back for the R669 and the welcome food stop along this gentle descent into the town of Cappoquin. This route is ideal for those looking for a moderate challenge with the scenic climb of the Vee, along with the beautiful Dromana drive part of the route. A reasonable level of fitness would be required to enjoy your day in the saddle and the fantastic scenery that the area offers.

Eochaill Og Match Reports and Results:

Sunday 29.01.12 – Venue: Cloughduv – U/16 County Hurling League Final .

Eochaill 0 - 05 Clonakilty 1 – 08

On Sunday 29th January the postponed U16 County League Hurling Final V Clonakilty took place in Cloughduv. This proved to be tough day for the lads having lost all momentum after winning the East Region league Final in November. Both teams tried their hardest but the game never got to championship pace. Clonakilty started the brighter and it took our lads 20mins to get going. Try as hard as we could we just never got into the game and Clonakilty ran out winners on a score line of 1-8 to 0-5.

Team: Kash Ranson, Sean Farrell, Chris Morrison, Conor Hennessy, Bill Mc Grath, Mark Flaherty, Chris Savage, Matt Farrell, Colin Keenaghan{Capt], Aidan O’Neill, Danny Walsh, Andrew Joyce, Ryan Coady, Ollie Dempsey, Ronan O’Sullivan.

Subs- Harry Oliphant, Rory Walsh, James Kelly, Darragh O’Connell.

Friday 01.02.12 – Venue: Club Aras – Minor Football Challenge.

Eochaill 5 - 08 Clashmore 3 – 12

Our Minor footballers got their season off to a winning start on Friday night last when they took on near neighbours Clashmore in a challenge. This was a positive start for the lads playing a nice attacking style. Faced with a strong Clashmore defence our forwards kicked some great scores with David O’Mahony, Dale Donoughe and Ordhan Brennan leading the way. David Twomey at midfield, Jason Murphy and Chris Savage in defence were solid throughout.

Team: G. O’Regan, C. Savage, R. O’Sullivan, M. O’Neill, C. Daly, O. Brennan, J Murphy,

D. O’Mahony, M. Kenefick.

Saturday 04.02.12 – Venue: Carrigadrohid – U/14 Football League.

Canovee 2 - 12 Eochaill 0 – 01

On Saturday our under 14 Footballers travelled away to play Canovee in the opening round of the football league. On a very wet day in Carrigadrohid with the bare 15 players available ( our thanks to Rory Mc Sweeney for coming along and making up the numbers ) we took to the field of play. Canovee had us under pressure right from the start. Our full back line all played well. The two Mc Sweeney brothers tried very hard. Aaron O Callaghan had a good second half at wing forward.

A special thanks to Catherine, David and Sandy for their time given in helping to drive the lad’s to Carrigadrohid. It was great to have their support on the day, encouraging and driving the team on, when all seemed against them including the weather.

Best for Youghal: Zach Downing, Jack Monaghan and Conor Walsh.

Team: Liam Mariga, Sean Hennessey, Liam Forrest, Zach Downing, Aaron O Callaghan, Rian McSweeney, Jack Monaghan, Leon Coady, Conor Walsh, Sean Smiddy, Fionn Cliffe, Cathal Mariga, Dillon Hogan, Oran Hennessey, Rory McSweeney.

Monday 06.02.12 – Venue: Club Aras – U/15 Football League.

Eochaill 4 - 09 Midleton 5 – 08

Tuesday 07.02.12 – Venue: Club Aras – Minor Football League.

Eochaill 4 - 07 Castlelyons 1 – 08

Our Minor Footballers got their League campaign of to a winning start when they took on Castlelyons in Youghal on Tuesday last 7TH February. Missing a few players due to college and exams, the lads started brightly. Both sides were evenly matched in the first half. Up front David O’Mahony and Dale Donoghue were playing well. Jason Murphy and Chris Savage tried hard to keep the Castlelyons attack at bay. A spell of Indiscipline led to a number of silly frees which the visitors converted. With five minutes to go to the break Tomas Coleman scored a well taken goal after great work by David Twomey and Cillian Ansbro. The first half finished, Youghal 1-2 Castlelyons 0-7.

The second half saw Ronan O’Sullivan move to midfield and Lee McCarthy introduced at center back. Right from the throw in Youghal set about winning this game with a much improved attitude. Colin Keenaghan at center forward started to get on more ball and our midfield pairing dominated the center of the field which led to a better supply to the full forward line and after 7 minutes Andrew Joyce finished a great move to the back of the Castlelyons net. From there the lads controlled the game and ran out winners on a score line of Youghal 4-8 Castlelyons 1-7. Round 2 of the league see the lads travel to Blarney to take on the home side on 18th February.

Team: Danny Walsh, C Savage, R O’Sullivan, M O’Neill, C Daly, D Twomey, J Murphy, B O’Donoghue, C Ansbro, D O’Donoghue, C Keenaghan, T Colman, O Dempsey, D O’Mahony, M Coady.

Ever wonder how far it is from Cork to Swansea? Staff at the 4 star Garryvoe Hotel, on the shore of Ballycotton Bay in East Cork, decided to run a fundraising event that would cover the distance to raise funds for their local RNLI lifeboat station across the bay in Ballycotton.

Garryvoe-Hotel-management,-lifeboat-fundraising-committee

Proposals were put forward and the idea of Swimming to Swansea was born. It is approx. 314 kms from Cork to Swansea and the organisers wondered if they could cover the distance in 24 hours. Those taking part quickly realised that if this mammoth task was to succeed they would need some help. Posters were put up in the hotel leisure centre looking for volunteers. Leisure centre members interested in taking part were encouraged to take sponsorship cards.

On Saturday, 23 July 2011, at 8am, a team of 25 swimmers started a relay swim in the Garryvoe hotel leisure centre swimming pool. Their aim was to swim 80 kms in 12 hours. When the swimmers were finished their part of the swim they were presented with a bag with fruit and bottled water, sponsored by the Village Greengrocer in Castlemartyr.

The second part of the fundraising event was to row the balance of the distance, i.e. 234 kms. Approaches were made to the Fastnet Line, who kindly agreed to sponsor the return trip for the fundraising team and provided a cabin to rest in between rowing. At 6pm on the 23rd a team of 9 rowers took a bus from the Garryvoe Hotel to Ringaskiddy to catch the Fastnet Line ferry to Swansea. They brought three rowing machines with them. Two came from the Garryvoe Hotel leisure centre and a third was provided by T&T Fitness.

The 9 rowers formed three teams of 3 and commenced rowing on deck in relays. They rowed from Cork to Swansea. While one team was rowing the others rested in the cabin provided by the Fastnet Line. To ensure the fundraisers got the best support possible, and raised as much money for Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat as they could, regular announcements were made throughout the ship encouraging travellers to visit the rowers and offer their support. RNLI lifeboat collection buckets were placed close to the rowing machines and passengers dropped money into them to help with the sponsorship effort.

The weary but delighted team of swimmers and rowers completed their 314 kms task. In January 2012, when all funds were counted, Stephen Belton, General Manager, and staff at Garryvoe Hotel presented a cheque for €3,500 to members of the Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat fundraising committee. Mr. Belton related that the staff at Garryvoe Hotel were delighted to support this local charity. Committee Chairman, Fiona Flynn, said the funds raised by the Garryvoe Hotel and Leisure Centre staff and members would go towards on-going training of lifeboat crew. Ms Flynn thanked them for their efforts and explained how much it is appreciated by all involved at Ballycotton RNL lifeboat station.

Finally to our parents committee and all parents who provided sandwiches and cakes thank you.

There were 24 sides at the very first break off on Friday morning last and immediately the top seeded sides began well securing early wins, but when Saturday came, the changes rang out especially for the Cork sides who definitely began to bed themselves in to contention and by the end of play on Saturday evening no less than six Cork sides were in the knock out stages.

The defending champions the New Institute from Nenagh Co. Tipperary were in awesome form, as were the previous six time winners the Victoria from Limerick.

The story of the knock out stages had to be Fermoy CYMS who had a great championships and made it through to the quarter final after defeating Douglas A. The win was remarkable in so many ways, because this was the first competitive outing for Fermoy this year as a team and considering that the North Cork club were not participants this year in the Cork snooker league it was a great effort and hopefully this will re-ignite some interest in re-forming a side for next years league in Cork.

Youghal CYMS had both their A and B sides in the knock out stages and the A side breezed past Carrick-on-Suir to the quarter finals, meanwhile the Youghal B side were a black ball away from victory against Ennis, but the Clare men progressed through to meet New Institute.

The Crucible were excellent against Thurles and set up a match against against Fermoy and were equally impressive to make it through to the semi finals.

Waterford A pulled off the result of the quarter finals defeating the Victoria A from Limerick, meaning for the very first time there would be no Limerick representation at the ‘All Ireland Snooker Club championships for the very first time.

Youghal CYMS also booker their place into the semi finals and All Ireland qualification after a very impressive win over New Institute B.

The semi finals were tense as always and the New Institute A side prove just a little better than Youghal CYMS on the day winning their semi final match and they stood just one match away from retaining their title.

The other semi final was a much closer affair with the Crucible from Cork coming out against Waterford A, but it took some Greg Casey Magic to secure the victory in the deciding frame.

The final is always tense, but it was a very difficult match to call with both sides draped in International players.

Leading Senior number one ranked player Brendan O’Donoghue won his match impressively for New Institute to take a one nil lead in the best of five match format, but the Crucibles Ryan Cronin was quick to restore balance with a very strong win in his game.

The next match went to New Institute who now had the narrow advantage, but despite a Greg Casey victory which included a 101 break it wasn’t enough because Tommy Gleeson potted the winning balls to secure a Tipperary victory.

Next weekend is the All Ireland Championships weekend and Cork Snooker will have to very able representatives available in the Crucible and the Youghal CYMS side.

Greg Casey and his Crucible team mates came to within a frame of lifting the Munster title so they will be very confident coming into the championships.

Youghal CYMS leader Brendan Cooney and his team mates will also feel that they can make a big impression in the tournament.

There will be a break in the Cork Billiards and Snooker Association league will not be played this week due to the All Ireland Championships, but will resume in two weeks time, with Youghal CYMS B, the AOH and Douglas B all trying to secure the two available semi final spots

Reports that up to €100,000 is being made available to upgrade the stand at Youghal Greyhound Track have been welcomed by David Stanton, Fine Gael TD for Cork East. While details of any funding are still to be finalised, I understand that Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Shane McEntee, decided to support funding for the track following his visit to Youghal last summer.

Youghal Greyhound Track

“I have been advised that Minister McEntee was very impressed with the commitment shown by representatives of Youghal Greyhound Track, Youghal Chamber of Commerce and other people from Youghal with whom he met. As a result, it is hoped that funding of as much as €100,000 will be made available to improve the greyhound stadium”, said Deputy Stanton.

“Youghal Greyhound Track has been in operation for many years. It is the only greyhound track located in a seaside location in Ireland and is very important not only for the tourism industry in the town but also the Irish greyhound industry in general. I am sure that this amount of funding will enable much needed refurbishment and improvements to be carried out at the track. These enhancements will ensure the continued viability of the stadium and also serve as a boost for future growth.

“This award of €100,000 for Youghal Greyhound Track coupled with the €400,000 earmarked for development of Youghal Swimming Pool should greatly contribute to the development of public facilities in Youghal. Funding of this level is much needed in Youghal. More, however, still needs to be done to improve local infrastructure and services. I intend to continue to work with people in Youghal to identify further projects in the area which might attract Government grants and funding,” concluded Deputy Stanton

Youghal’s reputation as ‘Ireland’s Finest Coastal Resort’ will be significantly enhanced with the completion of the first phase (395 metres) of the long-anticipated 2000mm-wide mobility-disabled access boardwalk running from Youghal Front Strand to Claycastle. The route is set to be completed by the end of January 2012. (The second phase of the development will see the completion of the link between Claycastle and Redbarn). The boardwalk consists of hardwood timber deck supported on piled foundations, not requiring a railing, and once complete will span 1926 metres, eventually forming part of the National Coastal Walking Route.

The new Eco-Friendly Boardwalk at Claycastle.

Financed by Failte Ireland (under the Tourism Capital Investment Programme 2007-2013) in partnership with Youghal Town Council, the boardwalk will promote and enhance Youghal’s considerable ecological resources in a sustainable manner. The completion of the walkway will benefit both domestic and international visitors to Youghal, but also local Youghal residents, providing a safe and well marked walk-way for recreational use. The amenity will further enhance the resort’s three blue flag beaches. It is expected that families of all ages (the key target market for the area) staying in the Quality Hotel & Self Catering Resort in Redbarn will be provided with direct pedestrian access to the town.

In 2008, The Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group (YSEDG) commissioned consultants to prepare a report on the feasibility of an eco-friendly walkway from Youghal Town Centre to Ballyvergan Marsh and onto Redbarn. A boardwalk was considered the most appropriate method of providing controlled access to the route, having a low impact on the environment which would be accessible, for the most of its length, to wheelchairs and push chairs. In 2010 Failte Ireland indicated that the proposed project would comply with the terms of their capital funding and in turn the YSEDG undertook the successful fund development of the first phase of the project which is in the jurisdiction of Youghal Town Council. Failte Ireland allocated 75% of the costs of the project, totalling €137,434 with Youghal Town Council financing the remainder. Commenting on the project, Fiona Buckley, Head of Operations South West stated: “Investing in our tourism offering is critical to ensuring we are able to compete with other holiday destinations across the globe – offering visitors to Ireland a memorable holiday experience, which includes high quality activities and attractions. As a national tourism development authority we are continually working to ensure we do just that and this development here is Youghal is a great example of what can be done and further adds to the great visitor experience that is already available in the South West.”

Following a public tender process, Byrne Plant Hire & Civil Engineering Contractors were awarded the contract for the project which got underway in October 2011. It is expected that following on from the completion of Phase I of the project (Youghal Town Centre to Claycastle) in January 2012 Phase II of the development of this walking route linking Claycastle with Redbarn would get underway. Failte Ireland has indicated their support in financing capital works for Phase II following the completion of Phase I subject to availability of funding. Phase II of the project is under the remit of Cork County Council and is the most ecologically sensitive and challenging in terms of access. An ecological impact assessment and the appropriate assessment screening on this section of the proposed walkway are currently underway.

Speaking ahead of the opening of the boardwalk, Town Clerk Liam Ryan said: “The delivery of this Boardwalk shows the commitment of Youghal Town Council to improving the tourism infrastructure of the Town, and is a further step forward in maximising the potential of our natural tourism assets for the economic benefit of business in Youghal. We will be actively encouraging Cork County Council to complete Phase 2 of the Boardwalk Project linking Redbarn and the Quality Hotel to the town. These linkages will benefit substantially the Strand area of the Town and help to develop further sustainable tourism jobs for the Town.”

Crucially, the environmental impact of the walkway will be minimal with the boardwalk providing a ‘buffer zone’ to help combat soil erosion. Always central to the development of the boardwalk were that Youghal’s considerable ecological resources would be promoted and enhanced in a sustainable manner having a particular regard for Ballyvergan Marsh. The route traverses a number of natural habitats, thereby offering opportunities for the identification of various species of birds and plants as well as highlighting the value of biodiversity and the ecological value of the marshlands. The completed walkway will aim to build on this natural resource and promote a greater awareness of the natural and cultural heritage of the area in particular among international visitors to the town.

The potential for the development of educational tourism is significant, as the route will offer the possibility of developing a number of themes including urban development, ecology, geology and coastal processes.

The completion of the first phase of the project comes in the wake of the announcement that Youghal has secured a number of escorted tour series for 2012 and 2013 from CIE Tours International. Investment in heritage and tourism infrastructure is finally beginning to reap rewards for Youghal as the town delivers on the needs of its two key tourism markets – the cultural/heritage tourism visitor and the domestic family market. These visitors will in turn contribute to the boosting of Youghal’s economic fortunes in the years ahead.

Over the past few years this has proved to be a special night for all of our juvenile players where they receive their medals from inter county stars in front of family and friends. All welcome.
