Greenbarn will “donate 10% of takings to the Foundation, while a raffle and voluntary donations will also seek to raise funds. All proceeds will go to DISCOVARY, a consortium directly engaged in research on the pathogenesis of ovarian/uterine cancer. This consortium is broad-based across several Irish colleges whose specialists work on individual yet linked projects, as well as linking their research with experts in the USA.

Youghal girl Emer succumbed to the disease in 2006, aged just 28. The solicitor with Dublin Dublin-based law firm, Matheson, Ormbsy, Prentice Solicitors, was known as a vivacious, caring girl who loved sport and travel. The youngest of five girls, she is survived by her sisters and parents, Brendan and Juliette.

Emer’s short life and tragic death continues to bequeath hope to others as her family and friends promote a Foundation that has contributed over €160,000 to cancer research since 2007. Most of the money has been raised through road an annual road race in Youghal, which is paralleled with similar events in New York and Melbourne. Other fundraisers include an Opera evening with Puccini in Edinburgh, the DSBA/SYS Legal Table Quiz in Dublin, an upcoming golf classic in Blarney and another classical concert in Edinburgh, with Soprano Lisa Milne.

The Emer Casey Foundation has also agreed to fund two full-time post-graduate researchers for three years, based in TCD and UCD. They will focus their research on (a) protein signatures in early and recurrent ovarian cancer and (b) developing novel therapeutic approaches in cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer patients.

Amongst those adorning Saturday’s event will be entertaining landscape architect and horticulturist Andrew Cozzi, flower arrangers Anne Cooney and Kathleen McSweeney. Cooks Mary Kay Solomon of Sunflower Cookery, Mary Tattan of Ballycotton’s Spanish Point and Greenbarn’s own Margaret Browne, who can do just about anything. Local councilor Sammy Revins will transfer his roasting and toasting skills from the chamber to the centre to oversee a barbecue.

The complex issue of parking allocation for deValera Street residents at the area’s impending new car park brought heated exchanges during a highly-charged debate at November’s Town Council meeting. Mayor Olly Casey traded sharp criticism and invective with several councillors, most especially Cllr Dave Savage as the discussion sent blood pressures towards the stratosphere.

At one stage Mayor Casey accused Cllr Savage of ’sitting on the fence’ and ‘lacking the guts’ to support his convictions. Cllr Savage in turn described Mayor Casey as ‘peddling nonsense’ and ‘creating a mess on deValera Street’ while failing to heed the concerns of his own council’s executive.

The issue’s roots lie in a motion passed last September by the council voted to allocate 17 designated parking spaces, from a total of 37, to deValera Street resident permit holders (one per house) when the new car park opens on the laneway. A previous proposal simply to supply permits on a non-allocation basis was thus bypassed.

The council executive subsequently sought legal opinion as to whether the Motion could be legally implemented. Legal Counsel advised that implementing the Motion, could indeed prove unconstitutional on several grounds, not least ‘transfer of benefit and/or land’ of a publicly-funded property to private citizens. Town manager Patricia Power, the executive could not possibly implement it.

Mayor Casey, supported Cllr Burke, had circulated the meeting with written responses to that legal opinion’s reservations, while arguing too that legal opinion was foremost not binding and another barrister might submit alternative views. In that case, the matter could go before a court, but he wanted to avoid this outcome.

The letter argued that there was already ‘transfer of benefit’, through such hackney spaces, casual trading areas, trolley areas at supermarkets, etc. Particularly, for 17 years, Belmont, Upper Strand, had been a residents parking only zone.

Word War!

In the ensuing hour of verbal jousting, Town Clerk Liam Ryan argued that Belmont and other areas were roads and not car parks. Cllr Burke insisted that a section of the 1961 Traffic Act stipulated that public areas included car parks. He added that the council had the power to make laws for special circumstances. Mr. Ryan refuted this interpretation of the Act and said that businesses were allocated spaces on foot of capital charges and development levies. The Motion promoted ‘a perceived transfer of rights’ and amounted to the same thing (as ‘transfer of benefit and/or land’), he said.

Mayor Casey invoked health and safety concerns and said unless cars were fully removed from deValera Street and the thoroughfare made two-way, emergency services would be compromised. Cllr Burke drove on, as it were by adding that legally, ‘any person in authority who failed to act where a risk has been identified, could be rendered personally liable in the event of an accident.’ He said a ‘paper trail’ existed whereby the risk had been outlined and the ball was now in the manager’s court of the council wanted to avoid such a dire possibility.

The Town Manager repeated her assertion that she simply could not act against the advice of legal counsel and that doing so would, in any case, set an alarming precedent. ‘We might have to allocate private parking spaces to people very time we paint new double lines or demolish a corner,” she suggested. Cllr Burke insisted implementation was not being deemed “illegal’ by anyone.
Unreasonable

Cllr Barbara Murray said that allocating 17 spaces along with the future loss of eleven parking spaces on nearby North Main Street when parallel parking is introduced, would mean a net gain of only nine spaces at deValera Street. At €240,000, plus development costs of €150,000, they’d be very expensive parking slots! Mayor Casey asked her what price she put on a life. Ignoring that jibe, Cllr Murray said the residents were unrealistic if seeking 17 spaces and estimated half that would suffice, with most car owners away during daytime. She felt they were reasonable people and open to negotiation.

An exasperated Mr. Ryan again asked why the original proposal to allow permits, but not allocate special spaces, could not be implemented. He said they now had bizarre possibility of people not being able to park in a half empty public car park! Cllr Murray returned that the council has a duty to all of the town’s citizens, whose money funded the facility, not just a small section.

Cllr Revins said he was “sick and tired” of listening to Mayor Casey’s argument and that full and proper information had not been provided when the Motion was passed, which was why he had abstained.

‘Gutless

Cllr Savage had also abstained at that meeting and when Mayor Casey, far from discomforted by the swell of opposition, made reference to free car parking at his business premises i the Strand, Cllr Savage felt personally goaded. Pent up frustration was unleashed and he engaged in a very heated argument with the Mayor, accusing him of ignoring the fact development charges had been paid, of creating a mess in deValera Street with a car park that would remain unfinished due to his intransigence and of “railroading” his agenda through the council. “You’re ignoring your own executive,” he goaded. Mayor Casey responded that Cllr Savage hadn’t “the guts to stand up for what you believe in and never had.”

Cllr Savage felt the issue should always have been decided through discussion with the resident and sought consensus from the chamber to invite them to a meeting. This was subsequently rejected.

By now the discussion/argument had ran for 55 minutes. It was 9.30 and Standing Orders forbade discussion of the matter beyond that time. Any further comment would in itself be deemed illegal! The matter was deferred to December’s meeting. “That’ll give everyone a chance to take a break,” remarked Mayor Casey.

Jay Flavin, Amnesty Ireland’s Cork Group Co Ordinator has welcomed reports of a new approach adopted by the Irish Government on the issue of extraordinary renditions. These reports indicate that the Government intends to review and strengthen legislation governing the search and inspection of suspected rendition flights and comes less than two months after Cork City Council passed a motion declaring the city a ‘Rendition-Free Zone’.

Youghal man Jay Flavin (White T shirt) with members of Cork Amnesty group pictured outside Cork City Hall

Amnesty International Ireland Executive Director Colm O’Gorman said: “This is a welcome victory for human rights in Ireland. Years of lobbying and campaigning by Amnesty members and other human rights activists across the country appear to have finally paid off. It is less than two months since hard work by Amnesty members in Cork saw it become one of the first local authorities in Ireland to declare itself rendition-free.

“We are happy to be in a position to commend our Government for showing political and moral leadership on this issue. “The kind of gross human rights violations that are the result of
extraordinary rendition or the so-called ‘war on terror’ are only possible in a world where states stay silent when they ought to challenge such violations.

“In June of this year when we published our report on renditions in Europe we acknowledged that the Irish Government has been a strident critic of the US extraordinary rendition programme and other aspects of its so-called ‘war on terror’.

“We called for this rhetoric to be matched by action and it appears the Irish Government has finally heeded that call and ended its reliance on entirely discredited diplomatic assurances.

“Thousands of people all over Ireland have marched, protested and lobbied politicians to this end. Amnesty members and other activists have maintained a constant presence at Shannon Airport monitoring the activity of suspected rendition flights.”

In particular Mr O’Gorman welcomed the establishment of a Cabinet Committee on Aspects of International Human Rights, which will be central to implementing the new approach.

“It is essential that a body like this at Cabinet level will drive the review of legislation, ensuring that civil and police authorities have the necessary power and resources to search and inspect suspected rendition flights,” continued Mr O’Gorman.

“We believe the outcome of this review must be made public and call on the
Government to announce a timeframe for its completion.

“We also welcome the announcement that Minister Mícheál Martin will seek a
clear statement from the incoming US President that his administration will
end the use of extraordinary rendition, close Guantánamo and prohibit the
use of all torture.

“The new approach must not deal solely with the search and inspection of aircraft, however. It must also review how Ireland identifies aircraft that may be involved in illegal activity, i.e. the nature of information demanded of foreign aircraft by aviation authorities, particularly those possibly masquerading as civilian planes.

“This information is essential if the right aircraft are to be inspected
and the Government is to move from demanding the Irish public to produce
evidence of suspicious aircraft.

“Also, search and inspection can only address flights that actually land on Irish territory and in no way addresses the issue of planes suspected of involvement in renditions using Irish airspace. Amnesty International will continue to engage with government to ensure that Ireland fulfils its
obligations under international human rights law.” Jay Flavin has also re issued the Cork Group’s request for Cork City Council to put up signs on major roads entering the City declaring Cork City a ” Rendition Free Zone ”.

Príonhoide Seán O'Murchú with Gaelscoil Chorain staff

Gaelscoil Chorain will celebrate its silver anniversary with a night of music and dancing at the Walter Raleigh Hotel on Saturday next (14th November). Local band Phantom Sound will supply the rhythm as parents past and present, along with former pupils re-unite in an atmosphere certain to be fused not just with joy, but pride.

Gaelscoil Chorain’s inauguration in 1983 placed it firmly in the history books as it pioneered a new era in Gaelscoileanna in Ireland. Apart from a few modhscoil that existed since the 50’s, mainstream tuition through the native language was unheard of. “It provided the first alternative to the long- established, Christian Brothers system at the time,” reflects Principal Sean O’Murchu.

The school began with 32 pupils in a six-room ex-technical school building off the main street. Enrolments mushroomed to over 250 and an extra room had to be acquired in the nearby community centre (and a pedestrian crossing installed between them). In 1997, the school moved to its present premises in, the former CBS national school, when that establishment merged with the Presentation Convent.

Gaelscoil Chorain pupils celebrate the 25th anniversary

The school now has 17 staff and teachers catering for 272 pupils in ten rooms. Further space is needed in truth but the Batt O’keefe cutbacks aren’t going to accommodate that necessity in the near future. The school has won numerous awards through the years, inclusive of drama, dancing, singing, music and sport. Small wonder that Mr. O’Murchu, who has been in situ since day on, describes the atmosphere at the school as “happy.”

Children are forever synonymous with stories and as Kerry-born Mr. O’Murchu reflects, there are many tales, amusing and endearing, to be told regarding the Gaelscoil Chorain. Those are for another day’s reading. Its difficult however, not to mention one of the school’s more intriguing ex-pupils, from the 1980’s, an era when foreign nationalities were rarely found behind a desk in an Irish school. “A lad of about nine enrolled,” recalls Sean. “He was unusual in that his father was German, which was his first language. His second language was Polish, as was his mother’s nationality. He spoke fluent French because the family had been living in France. Now he was learning Irish and English in Youghal.”

If nothing else, the story illustrates the amazing capacity for children to take in and retain vast amounts of information in their formative years. It also reminds that languages -and any subject- are more easily mastered when learned without force, threat and coercion. All of which makes it a shame that previous generations of Irish people learned Irish without loving or appreciating it, thanks to methods and personnel more suited to a torture chamber than a classroom.

Gaelscoil Chorain is far removed from those dark days, though there is concern, as in every school, that ‘the Batt factor’ will bring serious disruption. “If we lose a teacher or more for a day, we won’t be able to get a substitute any more,” complains Mr. O’Murchu. “This means dispersing pupils into other classes and it’s going to be a nightmare, especially if different ages have to merge. I don’t think parents fully realise just how awfully disruptive it is likely to be.”
Perhaps the next generation of politicians will better respect the education establishments that launched them to where they are.

None of which considerations will dissuade those attending Saturday night’s celebration from enjoying the wonderful achievements of the past 25 years -and looking forward to the next quarter century and beyond.

Dance starts 8.30 pm. Finger food/snack provided. Advance tickets @ €12 available from Gaelscoil Chorain 024)-93547, Walter Raleigh Hotel or McCarthy’s newsagents Tallow Street.

THE CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S TRUST:

The Cork/Waterford based Trust was formed in 2002 and is entirely voluntary. Volunteers are constantly required for a range of assistance activities that, briefly, involve:
Humanitarian Aid: Hand sorting aid and medicines for delivery by truck to Belarus.
Fundraising: Local events encouraged.
Convoy: Drivers supply cab (usually through fundraising); Trust provides trailer and accompanying ambulances. Trips take up to three weeks and drivers also cover costs, including flight home. Further understanding of myriad Chernobyl consequences forms part of the experience.
Nursing/Medical: All genres of qualified medical professionals need to work for minimum one-week stints in Belarus. In-country arrangements made by Trust and volunteer asked to assist with costs.
Construction: Again contribute to costs and work in tandem with Belarus trade personnel in renovations in disadvantaged areas.
Research/Evaluation: Now urgently needed to co-ordinate research and valuation on various Trust projects currently underway. Assist with costs but some funding grants available.
Host Children: Open home and heart for the grateful children from the affected area, for two to four weeks. Activities organised, interpreters available. A life-enhancing experience on both sides.

In more recent times, the Trusts was approached by ‘White Dover Chernobyl’, a Belarus organisation dealing with seriously ill children and their families. These are families who have chosen to care for their ill children at home rather than give them up to State care, which is the norm. The Trust members found an immense love, dedication and great dignity struggling amidst poverty, hardship and a dearth of official support.

The Trust’s subsequent report recalls families living in “huge concrete blocks without wheelchair access, gloomy stairwells and corridors.” However, “once the door of a flat was opened, we were welcomed into the warmth of the family home, which was often just one room serving as living, kitchen and bedroom,” says the report.

A small number of medical professionals were amongst the members who travelled to the city of Gomel. On assessing many of the children they found, despite the harsh conditions, that many of the needs of the families were achievable. Friday night in Ballincollig is part of the reason why.
The full report on last March’s visit posted on the Trust’s website.

The talented musicians must be praised for the great entertainment on offer from 8.30 till after midnight. The dance floor was constantly full; every seat in the house taken and because of the large crowd parking meant a long walk. Much praise too must go to the organising committee and to everyone who took part in this great fundraising venture. This was a special night in that all funds raised were in aid of Fr. Keane’s Missionary work in Ecuador.

Youghal native Fr. John Keane has been working with the extreme poor in the Good Shepherd Parish of La Libertad with the St James the Apostle Society. Since his arrival in 2006 he has organised several relief programs, runs a medicine purchasing program, helps with providing food, clothing supplies, education and housing many of the thousands who live side by side in this small area in Cane shacks high in the Andes Mountains. It can cost up to €2,000 to provide enough food to feed
approx 2000 people every two weeks. In this area there are no money, no work, no health facilities, political unrest and no land in which to grow crops or create any self sustaining growth programs. Click on image to enlarge

Fair City actor Tom Hopkins (aka Christy Phelan) and Brian Crowley MEP were on hand to celebrate the achievements of adult learners in Youghal at a special award ceremony held at Cumann na Daoine’s new premises in Catherine Street (formerly The League of the Cross). Over 60 certificates were awarded in subjects ranging from computers, personal development and family communications. The Celebration of Adult Learners was organised by Youghal’s Equality for All initiative which aims to promote equality through improving people’s access to education, training and employment opportunities. A special round of applause went to the 28 local women who will graduate from UCC later this year with UCC diplomas in Social Studies (the course was held in Youghal and was part funded through Equality for All).

Tom Hopkins shared his own inspiring story of returning to education after five years on the dole - despite his initial fears and insecurities he went on to graduate with honours from theatre studies in Trinity College and secure a place in RTE’s drama Fair City. His story was echoed by other adult learners, who said that the hardest part was making the decision to sign up for a course. “Everyone is nervous on the first day of a course” said Equality for All Co-ordinator Sharon Lupton “It is great to witness the change in people’s levels of confidence as they progress”

The Equality for All programme is based in Cumann na Daoine and is funded by RAPID, Cork County Council, SECAD and the Dept of Social and Family Affairs. The programme’s success is largely due to the strong partnership it has forged with the funders and others such as VEC, FAS, UCC, Cork Social and Health Education Project.
Steve Whelan has a very down to earth approach delivering his music with a spirit of honesty presence and grit. His smoky vocals married with his simple but poetic and addictive melodies produces a musical honesty and edge possessed by few writer composers. His influences range from Ben Harper, Cat Stevens, The Beatles to Gospel and Spiritual music.
