Members of the South East Scooters from Waterford and members of the Cork City Mod scene on their Vespas and Lambrettas stopped off in Youghal on their monthly ride out. Mods use motorscooters for transportation, usually Vespas or Lambrettas. Scooters had provided inexpensive transportation for decades before the development of the mod subculture. Mods stand out in the way that they treated the vehicle as a fashion accessory. Italian motorscooter are preferred, due to their cleanlined, curving shapes and gleaming chrome. For young Mods, Italian scooters are

Money Makes The Repairs Go Round

Youghal Town Clerk Liam Ryan warned the September council meeting to bear in mind that money is the oil that turns most wheels when next year’s budget meeting comes round. The official had listened to a long litany of requested remedies for maladies like cavernous potholes, long grass and dangerously unmarked roads, etc, etc, when he broached the crux of most arguments. ‘At the last two budget meetings, expenditure budgets were cut to the core in order to minimise rates increases,’ he said, before elaborating that, €50,000 had been provided for ongoing maintenance work in the 2008 budget, which was already spent. “Unless you provide substantial funds for ongoing road and footpath maintenance, then there is nothing we can do about several of the issues that you have raised.”

The fiscal sky grew darker as Mr. Ryan pointed out that ‘the Dept of Environment had already issued formal letters requesting the local authority to cut expenditure and payroll costs by at least 3% on last year’s budget.’  Cllr Barbara Murray responded that

Youghal Town Council Wants To Meet Gormley

Youghal Town Council is to seek a delicate, sorry, delegate meeting with Environment Minister John Gormley to highlight the urgency of a Main Drainage scheme for the town. -Christy Parker Reports

The decision comes amidst warnings by Town Manager Patricia Power that it is crucial for Youghal to “use any opportunity to maintain pressure” to acquire the scheme, given simultaneous demands from other towns in the county and the economic downturn.

Ms. Power told the September Town Council meeting that Youghal’s case is “being prioritised” by the County Engineer and that the design stage for the estimated €25m scheme had commenced. However, progress is likely to be very difficult.

Though nobody seemed keen to mention it, the issue has acquired added relevance with the recent loss of Youghal’s blue flag at the Front Strand, Redbarn’s fluttering emblem of excellence having been previously conceded. Ms Power referred to a “very difficult year,” to which “adverse weather” contributed, before turning her attention to the relevant challenge of the drainage scheme.

Cllr Dave Savage opted to describe the scheme as “crystal critical” for the housing boom “if and when it comes back.” Town Clerk Liam Ryan then summarised that regardless of trying to have buttons pushed directly or

Bus Stop-North Main St.

Youghal Town Council’s September meeting rejected a motion from Cllr Barbara Murray to liaise with Bus Eireann with a view to relocating the bus stop at the Fair Field the width of the footpath back, to facilitate traffic flow when a bus is parked. Presently, buses cause visual impediment to drivers exiting the car park and also slow traffic flow.

Cllr Sammy Revins abstained from voting as it he had previously tabled a successful motion to have the stop relocated to New Catherine Street (opp. Back of AIB), precisely for the reasons now being advocated by Cllr Murray. This initiative has since come a

Some 30 years after the last train departed, Youghal Town Councillor David Savage wants Iarnrod Eireann to ‘cut the grass” and, by inference, clean up the town’s disused railway station. The councillor described the area as “Youghal’s most derelict site” at the September council meeting. He said any owner of such a site in town would be held accountable but Iarnrod Eireann had “got off scot free for years.” The councillor said he

CruX Dance Theatre-Contemporary Irish Dance

CruX Dance Theatre-Contemporary Irish Dance

CruX Dance Theatre in its 2008 tour brings together the expertise of three professional Irish choreographers. Jane Kellaghan from Cork and Artistic Director of CruX Dance, Fearghus o Conchuir and Mairead Vaughan. This years triple performance is called “Stage of My Mind” and examines the idea of self estrangement and the inability to self soothe in our hectic pace of modern life. Each choreographer was given free reign to create a piece on the concept of “Stage of My Mind”. Cork based Jane Kellaghan Director of CruX Dance has included in her interpretation video and text based on a piece written by Breda Dooley, also from Cork. The other two choreographers created their own dialogue with the dancers based on the concept and created a triple bill which provides a full evenings performance of dance.

Reactions to the triple bill were a plenty at the post performance reception in the Firkin Crane. The audience was fascinated by the first piece, softly soothed by the second piece and intrigued by the combination of technology, dialogue and dance of the final piece. The dancers are now looking forward to continuing their countywide tour based on the
