YOUGHAL ART GROUP celebrated seventeen years in existence when its annual art exhibition was officially opened by local radio broadcaster John Kennedy from Youghal Radio C.R.Y. 104fm. The exhibition is held at the Methodist Church Hall in Friar Street, Youghal. Paintings across various genres with different mediums are featured.
Speaking at the exhibition John said, “It is great to see the love of art expressed here by the Youghal Art Group. It is hard for children these days to understand the lack of colour when he was a child growing up in Cappoquin and Dungarvan during the war years, everything appeared drab and grey”. With his own interest in radio it would always amaze him to see the wonderful design of the radio cabinets. He recalls seeing Peter Watson painting the varnish on the cabinets in the old Murray Kitchens factory which to him was “a work of colourful art”. Upon seeing the work of another local artist, Cormac Mehegan at the world famous Youghal Carpets, it was wonderful to see the intricate designs woven into the fabric of the carpet, like the image of the Pope and Youghal’s Clock Gate to mention but a few.
He also remembered the work of Albert Cole and potter Tony Breslin working in pottery at Priory Ceramics and how he marveled at Watson’s stained glass, seeing Cecil Watson work in colour and designing the glass and that work can still be seen today in churches around the country. It is hard to imagine these gifted men of colour and design during those days of old. But now it is great to see the lovely art galleries here in Youghal, Ardmore and Dungarvan and great to see art blooming again.
This year’s art exhibition is dedicated to the memory of the late Gretta Kelleher who was one of the founding members of the group and who sadly passed away last year. The members generously make a donation to local charities in lieu of cheese and wine at the opening night and this year’s charity is the local R.N.L.I. as Gretta was a volunteer and fundraiser for that institution.
The Youghal Art Group meet on the first Wednesday of every month at the Cumann na Daoine premises in Catherine Street. Guest speakers and outings form part of the group’s activities, as does occasional Saturday masterclasses. Current membership stands at 13, with new members always warmly welcomed.

A FACEBOOK PAGE called ‘Save Youghal Ambulance’ was set up on Monday, July 11th and has already gained over 1,000 supporters. The page states that ‘From September 2011 the HSE plan to remove the Youghal Ambulance full-time from the town and plan to replace it with a solo paramedic response car.
Read full post below:
From September 2011 the HSE plan to remove the Youghal Ambulance full-time from the town. They plan to replace it with a solo paramedic response car. This means that if a medical emergency happens anywhere within the town or surrounding areas including Ardmore, Killeagh, Castlemartyr, Ballycotton, Knockanore and further afield the casualty will have to wait for AT LEAST 20 mins before an ambulance from Midleton, Dungarvan, Fermoy or even Cork City arrives to take them to hospital (this could take up to an hour!). This makes it impossible for a casualty to make it to an A+E Department within the recommended ‘golden hour’ and greatly reduces their chances of survival.
This decision has to be reversed or else lives will be lost!
- Please suggest this page to all of your friends as it may effect any one of your friends and family.
- Please also sign local petitions (details to follow)
- We will be asking you to write to the HSE and government soon also to voice your concerns and more details on how to do this will follow.
Below are just some of the comments on the Save Youghal Ambulance facebook page:
Tara O Connell
I think the petition might not be enough to change this decision, I think its time Youghal stood up and was counted, we have stayed quiet for long enough, lets take to the streets and stand up for our town, get camera crews and newspapers down and let them all know that we will not take this, and we do not want lives put at risk!!!
Anne Marguerite Graf
It is ludicrous to discontinue with the Ambulance Service. Upon a person sustaining a stroke or heart attack, the ambulance where I live in Nürnberg Germany is on the scene within 7 minutes. It is absolutely detrimental to be without an ambulance.
Anthony Mullane
got a spin off ye guys 6 years ago, and could not praise ye highly enough, patrick mc hung on awhile in the hospital, and was a great comfort to me and helen, i hope i wont need ye for awhile, but it would be nice to know ye were there, the people of youghal need and depend on this service, regards to all
Michaela Bailey
Maybe whoever made this decsion In the government should sit in the ambulance when the paramedics are doin the fantastic work they do in Youghal every day… And then see if the town doesn’t need an ambulance… The Youghal paramedics were amazing when my grandad was sick, and to this day I will thank them from the bottom of my heart. I’m sure the town will do whatever we can to save the ambulance in Youghal! X

On Friday the 27th of May at 10am Community Radio Youghal will embark on a Marathon of sorts as they attempt to broadcast 50 hours of continuous live Radio. The Radiothon kicks off on friday morning from 138 North Main Street Youghal and the CRY team will be broadcasting from the vacant premises and CRY studios for the duration of the 50 hours .
The feat is a joint fundraiser in aid of The Youghal Cancer Support Group and CRY104fm and all proceeds will be split evenly between the two organisations.
THE YOUGHAL CANCER SUPPORT GROUP- is dedicated to opening a drop in centre in Youghal, to offer help and support to all those who are dealing with, or have suffered the trauma of cancer. The Centre will also offer help and support to their friends and family. The group wants to offer this service to everyone in East Cork and West Waterford, providing a range of therapies and advice. It will cover Clashmore, Ardmore, Dungarvan,Tallow, Cappoquin, Lismore, Youghal, Killeagh, Castlemartyr, Midleton, and all townlands in between. In fact it will be open to people from all over that want to avail of the Centre.
Community Radio Youghal (CRY 104fm) meanwhile are planning to relocate from their existing premises in Cumann na Daoine to Nagle House, South Abbey in order to better serve the community. The new premises will provide better training facilities for Volunteers and Community groups. These facilities will allow greater access to Studio equipment and technical training for volunteers and for those who wish to gain experience in broadcasting and the media.
C.R.Y 104fm Station Manger, Declan Gibbons is looking forward to the station hosting the Radiothon. “We hosted an all-night Radiothon last December, to help raise much-needed funds for local boy, Keith Phelan and that was very well supported by station volunteers and by the local community.
This event really will be a marathon though – 50 hours of live radio, all provided by volunteers!
“We’re delighted to partner with the Youghal Cancer Support Group. They are seeking to provide a vital service in Youghal for people from all over our listenership area, so it makes perfect sense to support them. Volunteers from both organisations will be involved throughout the 50 hours and we hope that people will respond generously and get into the spirit of the Radiothon”, he said.
CRY continues to work closely with the students in Pobail Scoil Na Trionoide and it is fitting that Pobail Scoil students will launch this epic Radio Marathon on the friday morning.
There will be on street collections during Friday and Saturday and Collection boxes will also be placed in shops throughout Youghal town beforehand so if you want to play a request for yourself or your friends and family throw a Euro in the box and fill out the request form and all proceeds will go to these two worthy causes.

Pictured are some of the the CRY team who will take part in the Radiothon: Claire Regan, Yvonne Smith, Admin; Evelyn McGrath, Cumann Na Daoine; Noel Cronin and station manager Declan Gibbons. Kneeling: Colin Durkin and John Butt
And don’t forget all your favourite CRY presenters will be keeping you entertained throughout Friday and Saturday night the 27th and 28th of May.
Fota Wildlife Park are hosting a special Family Fun event this coming Sunday in association with South & East Cork Tourism to promote a new website www.familyfunholidays.ie, which is promoting East Cork and West Waterford as a family fun destination.
The new website which is funded by Failte Ireland aims to bring more families to towns such as Cobh, Midleton, Youghal, Lismore and Ardmore in 2011 through special offers, news, events and easy access to required information online. The site will act as the main promotional tool for the family fun hub which was established with Failte Ireland back in 2009.
Speaking about the new site chairman of the Family Fun Steering group Stephen Ryan hopes it will provide more information to tourists, “we have a lot of things for people to see and do in the area but sometimes its not easy to find out about them and we hope that this new website will enable potential visitors to find out all they need to know on one site. The new site has been designed by award winning Cork company Studio Forty9 and is set to appeal to all age groups with its easy navigation and bright colours.
The site will be officially launched this coming Sunday March 13th at Fota Wildlife Park’s Education Complex in association with South & East Cork Tourism and will bring together 40 different tourist businesses under one roof showcasing what they have to offer the public in 2011. Speaking about the launch Stephen who is also head of marketing at Fota Wildlife Park added “each year both Youghal Chamber and South and East Cork tourism have networking events for tourism providers however this year we are looking to get some of the public involved here at park so they get to see what else is on offer in the area plus enjoy some food tasting, enter competitions and have some fun with an array of characters who will be here on the day”.
Amongst the stands on the day will be Trabolgan, Perks Entertainment Centre, Cobh Heritage, Lismore Heritage, Jameson Distillery and Carleton Resorts. The event itself will run from 12pm until 5pm at the newly refurbish education complex with free childrens activities at the parks entertainment marquee throughout the day.
To celebrate the launch of the new site they are giving away a number of fantastic prizes including membership to Fota Wildlife Park and a weekend break at Trabolgan Holiday Village. To win one of these prizes you have to enter a special online survey through the new website which is being done in association with 3rd year students from the tourism department in Cork Institute of Technology.
Structure built without planning permission – By Christy Parker
Waterford County Council has informed St. Declan’s National School Ardmore that it must submit a retention application for its new astro turf facility. The local authority has given notice requesting that the Board of Management “regulate this unauthorised development by either submitting a retention application or removing” it. The notice seeks a response “without delay.” The board has acknowledged receipt of the notice and a further indication of its intentions is anticipated.
The new pitch, its surrounding 12 ft fencing and six floodlight pylons was erected without planning permission being sought or granted. While constructed on school property, it replaces what was, traditionally, open ground and a communal play area. Twenty six trees were also felled in the process. Should the retention be granted, a fee will be charged for its usage..
Local opinion seems to be divided on the issue, with some criticising the tree felling, the removal of the ‘free’ playing area and the general visual and environmental impact, all without a public meeting by way of consultation, let alone a planning application and the statutory public consultation process. Others, however, are said to be welcoming the facility, especially in lieu of organised sport pursuits.
The Board of Management were to discuss the matter on Tuesday night, Nov 30th and a spokesman declined to offer much comment prior to that. However he advised that the board had “called to people’s homes” prior to the construction and informed them in detail of the planned works. He claims that then and since, the facility has been greatly welcomed, with one or two exceptions.
Planning Enforcement Officer for Waterford County Council, Ella Whelan said the County Council do not intend fining or censuring the school for the contravention of planning regulations but that “all the issues will be dealt with in the course of the retention application and the subsequent of public consultation.” She added that an environment study on the lighting effect would “probably be needed” in tandem with the application. She didn’t know whether the pitch can be used while the retention application was being processed.
Youghal RNLI Lifeboat was launched on Saturday the 11th of Sept at 11.58 to a 28ft pleasure boat that was on fire 3.4 miles east of Caple Island with one person onboard.

When the Lifeboat arrived on scene the casualty had been transferred a local fishing vessel that was close by and was taken ashore to awaiting Lifeboat and HSE first aiders and Paramedics. The Youghal Lifeboat under the helm of David Slattery and crew members John Griffen Jr and Martin Morris stood by the boat and maintained a safety area around the burning vessel as it was believed there were gas cylinders on board. Fortunately the casualty was not injured but the boat later sank.
And again at 16.15 to a report of a sailing dinghy with two 14 years old girls onboard that had got into difficulty off Ardmore head. The Youghal Lifeboat under the helm of John Innes and crew members John Griffen Jr and Erik Brooks rescued the casualties from the water and assessed them to be hypothermic. The Waterford Irish based Coast Guard Helicopter was also on scene and due to the condition of the casualties RNLI helmsman John Innes decided to transferred them to the helicopter where they were taken to Waterford to an awaiting ambulance and taken to hospital where they were later released safe and well. The Youghal Lifeboat recovered the dingy and returned it to Ardmore.
Youghal RNLI Lifeboat Called To Pleasure Craft – Sunday 12th Sept 2010
The Youghal Lifeboat’s pagers went off for the third time this weekend this time to the aid of a 28ft pleasure craft that was experiencing engine failure 4.5 miles south east of Youghal Lighthouse. There were two people on board. Youghal Lifeboat under the helm of John Innes and crew members Thomas Cliffe and Eddie Hennessy arrived on scene and established a tow. The Lifeboat towed the vessel safely back to it’s moorings in the Youghal bay area and the lifeboat returned to station.

A beautiful sunset last evening (Sunday 29th August 2010) over Youghal Bay finally drew a fitting curtain over an exciting day of powerboat racing in the East Cork town. Returning to Cork waters for the first time in many years this year’s ISA National Powerboat Championship is proving to be a huge success with intense competition across all classes and superb excitement for spectators.
Photos: Ger Leahy
With the waters directly off the quays in Youghal roaring to the sound of 14 race engines, the quays were equally buzzing with the chatter of keen spectators enjoying this unique blend of water, noise, bravery and spectacle.
Although only in it’s first year, this was Youghal Bay Boat Club’s second hosting of a round of the National Championships – the first being in Ardmore back in July. In Ardmore it was the P750 (Thundercat) classes that provided the excitement, this time out the entire national powerboat racing fleet came to party.

Padraig Brooks, Commodore Youghal Bay Boat Club; Fionn Little & Ronan O'Connor of Youghal Bay Boat Club who came third in the P750 (Thundercat) Class, and Mary O'Donnell, Youghal Bay Boat Club
The weekend of maritime activities had begun the previous day with local marine training centre Aquatrek hosting the Munster Final of the Yachtsman Euromarine Rib Challenge and Youghal Bay Boat Club hosting their Commodore’s Cup and a thrilling aerobatics display by Gerry Humphries (and his wonderfully daft flying cow!) in the skies above Youghal. With two new ribs up for grabs in the national finals of the Rib Challenge, competition was naturally keen. Challenges were spread across land-based skills, questions and tasks – while on the water crews were tasked with a variety of tests. When the dust settled, the teams going through to the national final were announced as:
Seniors:
1st – Aquatrek Training Centre
2nd – Youghal Bay Boat Club
3rd – Tralee Bay Sailing Club
Juniors:
1st – Aquatrek Training Centre
2nd – Wexford Harbour Boat & Tennis Club
3rd – Wexford Harbour Boat & Tennis Club

left to right: Gearoid Hooley and Keith Goggin (Youghal Bay Boat Club), Aidan Foley and Ellen Danagher (Youghal Bay Boat Club), Ronan O'Connor and Fionn Little (Youghal Bay Boat Club), Aaron Warnock and Alvin Bell (East Coast Powerboat Racing Club), Colin Snow and Conor Mullaly (East Coast Powerboat Racing Club)
Sunday morning arrived with a car-park full of very strange machines for the people of Youghal to wonder about – it’s not every day you see a van with what looks like a little jet plane parked on its roof. With crews and boats from the four corners of Ireland filling out the car park the excitement grew from early morning until the first boats hit the water just after noon to begin a long day of hot action. Under blue skies and mostly clear water the afternoon was filled with twelve races in total. Community Radio Youghal were on hand to provide informative commentary and fill the time between races with music and banter. With this being the penultimate round of the national championships the racing was always expected to be intense, and the crews didn’t disappoint. Turn after turn, race after race, the crowds were treated to top-notch racing directly in front of the town’s quays. The big F2′s rocketing past at 100 miles an hour throwing huge plumes of water into the skies, the little P750 (Thundercats) throwing their boats and crews into impossible turns just inches apart from one another, and the T850 monohulls buzzing, skimming and often flying across the water.
For Youghal Bay Boat Club this was the first year in the build towards a major annual Maritime Festival, and it proved to be a satisfying success. For the spectators it was another opportunity to enjoy the wonderful spectacle which the waters of Youghal can provide. For the competitors it was an opportunity to showcase their sport and battle hard for championship points.
At the end of a long and exciting day the honours went to the following:
T850 Class
1st: Oliver Haire (North East Powerboat & Racing Club)
2nd: Megan Anderson (North East Powerboat & Racing Club)
3rd: Philip Haire (North East Powerboat & Racing Club)
Formula 2 Class
1st: Will Chambers (Lisnaskea Boat Club)
2nd: Liam Ralph (East Coast Powerboat Racing Club)
3rd: Oliver Haire (North East Powerboat & Racing Club)
Formula 4 Class
1st: Will Chambers (Lisnaskea Boat Club)
2nd: Phil Boyle (Irish Powerboat Club)
P750 (Thundercats)
1st: Sean Dillon & Gary Hogg (Irish Offshore Powerboat Racing Club)
2nd: Colin Snow & Conor Mullally (East Coast Powerboat Racing Club)
3rd: Ronan O’Connor & Fionn Little (Youghal Bay Boat Club)

Our Maritime Weekend actually kicks off on Saturday (Aug 28) as Aquatrek host the Munster Final of the ‘ISA Yachtsman Euromarine Rib Challenge’ on the quays in Youghal. Photo: Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com

If you’re part of an ISA club or training centre you should get a team together and enter. There are 2 classes – Junior and Senior. More details can be found by clicking here, or by phoning our very own John Innes on 086 859 3482.

And it’s not all about power this weekend (well, mostly it is!). We’re having a Commodore’s Cup Sailing Regatta also on Saturday afternoon. Sailors from Youghal and Inniscarra will compete on the water, and try not to get mowed down by wayward competitors in the Rib Challenge.
Youghal Harbour comes alive this Sunday when the only round of the ISA National Powerboat Championships to be held in Cork this year rolls into town and down the slipway. This will be the penultimate round of this year’s series and with points tight at the top of each class, competitive racing is guaranteed. The organisers of this round – Youghal Bay Boat Club – have been working hard to design courses that will ensure tight exciting racing with the whole event happening right in front of Youghal quays. Padraig Brooks - Commodore of Youghal Bay Boat Club tells us “This is the first time our new club has held powerboat racing here in Youghal. We hosted a round of the Championships across in Ardmore back in July which proved to be an enormous success with huge crowds and fantastic racing and now we look forward to welcoming the racing fleets and spectators to the waters of Youghal for what’s expected to be a memorable round of the championship. The layout of the quays allows for great viewing and we hope people will come down and enjoy the racing”.
Four classes are expected to race this Sunday – 29th August: The F2 & F4 classes look light waterborne jet fighters and can attain speeds approaching 200 kilometres an hour, the T850 fleet are an exciting monohull class, while the P750 class (better known as Thundercats) will make a welcome return to these waters following a highly successful international race back in 2008. Expect lots of noise, tons of excitement and a great spectacle for a wonderful family afternoon.
This is another exciting event for the recently formed Youghal Bay Boat Club. At the start of the Summer large crowds turned out to enjoy their Open Day which was followed closely by ‘WindQuest’ – an inter-club sailing competition – and then a competitive sea-angling competition in July. Given the natural amenities in the area it’s perhaps little surprise that a club in this East Cork town should have proved so active.
Racing on Sunday begins at 12.30 and continues throughout the afternoon with several races in each class. Music and commentary on the day will be provided by Community Radio Youghal and the centre of the action will be Nealon’s Quay (next to ‘The Quays’ bar).
We’re delighted to be able to confirm some more details about the Maritime Weekend that’s taking place in Youghal this Saturday and Sunday (August 28th & 29th). Photo: Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com Email: news@youghalonline.com

Gerry Humphreys - inset - gives a magnificant aerobatics display in his Vans RV7 over Youghal harbour. Pic: www.youghalonline.com
The first ‘biggie’ is an aerobatics display that will be flown by Gerry Humphreys in his Vans RV7 at 3.30pm on Saturday afternoon. This is the first time such a display has been flown in the skies over East Cork so we’re expecting it to be truly memorable. Youghal is a great location for such a display so people are advised to get along quayside to watch the excitement. Further details on this are available here on our website:

Further details on the National Powerboat Championships – which we’re hosting on the Sunday are also available on the site, specifically on this page:

We’re a young club (less than a year old) and there’s only so much we can do with our reach. This weekend is a continuation of the events we’ve already delivered this year and a taster of what we hope to bring in the future, so we humbly ask that you assist our endeavors by helping to spread the word.
