Berties Golf Society had its first outing of the year with the always popular Bertie Dempsey Memorial Cup in Youghal last Saturday, 19 February.  Big numbers were expected and we were not disappointed, with 68 players teeing off on the day.

Dave Browne was the winner beating Colin Heaphy into 2nd place on the back 9.  Well done Dave.
Captain Pad Joe Terry and Vice Captain Michael O’Sullivan presented the prizes later that evening in Berties.  Awards for GUI and non-GUI Players of the Year went to Paddy Heaphy and Alan Downing respectively, with both these prizes kindly sponsored by Paul Dempsey.  Fine speeches were made by Paul Dempsey and, representing Youghal Golf Club, Patsy Regan.

The Society would like to take this opportunity to thank Youghal Golf Club for looking after us so well on the day.  The food and service at the club is top notch!

Well done to everyone who played on the day.  The Society is growing in number year after year and has its strongest turn out at this event, a fitting tribute to the man himself, Bertie Dempsey, a great supporter of all sports in our town always.

Our next outing is to Mahon in April and we will be hoping to get a few more to travel on the bus as it is guaranteed to be back in Berties by 9 o’clock sharp! Lastly, a big welcome to all our new members.  We hope you all enjoy the year of golf and craic ahead.

When all odds seemed against us with the recent floods and bad weather, Berties luck was in, and the sun shone yet again for what was a splendid December morning. Playing Waterrock golf course one would be oblivious to recent wet weather as the course was in fabulous condition. Numbers throughout the year were great and the christmas scramble was no different with 35 golfers playing.
The winners on the day were Eoin Siocru, Dermot Hogan & Ger Walsh
Second were Jim Fahy, Dave Killgannon & Patrick O Sullivan
Third were Donie McCarthy, Donie Leahy and Stevie Mulcahy
The society would like to thank John Butler Buses for their kind sponsorship of the competition and their “patient” service throughout the year.

On thursday night  (17 Dec. 2009) the player of the year prizes were given out in Berties Bar. The winners were Richard Griffin (GUI) and Alan Downing (Non GUI) with great golf all year long from both lads. The committee would like to thank Paul and Carmel Dempsey for sponsoring the player of the year prizes, as they have done every year, and its great to be associated with a bar and family with such a huge sporting tradition. All the Dempsey family’s help is hugely appreciated by the society.

The AGM will be held in Youghal Rugby Club on Friday the 15th of January at 7pm sharp. Lads please make an effort to attend as new faces aboard the committee are always welcome.

On a final note the committee would like to thank all members, sponsors and anyone that helped us in having a super year. Here’s to another one next year. Happy Christmas to all!
