Representatives from the group along with the volunteers who took part in the marathon and sponsors were delighted with the support shown to the group. Mareka McEvoy who organised the event said she was delighted to help contribute to the local cancer support group as families and survirors of cancer need support and hope that this would help the group in their plans for the drop in centre.
Therese O’Connell, chairwoman of the Youghal Cancer Support Group thanked all those involved in the fundraiser and heaped great praise on the sponsors, Isodoro Girasole and Valerie Dollard from La Bella Roma restaurant, north main st., John Daly from Daly Bus Travel, Michael McGrath from Genesis Boutique, North Main Street and Brookes Supervalu.
It is estimated that some 10,000 or so took part in 2011 Evening Echo Womens mini-marathon and raised a huge amount of money for various charities. The weather on the morning of the marathon was awful but despite this a full bus of volunteers left Youghal courtesy of John Daly Bus hire and had a great day including the 5 ‘ladetts’ comprising of Sean Murphy, Paddy Anski, Billy O’Mahony, Olan McCarthy and Michael Desmond who dressed up well for the occasion! Thankfully the weather cleared up on the day as well.
The Youghal Cancer Support Group was founded in June 2010 since which several fundraising initiatives have been successfully held and thousands of euro raised.
Further fundraising events are planned with the group aiming to establish a new, purpose built cancer support & drop in centre for the East Cork & West Waterford region. It is envisaged to open a holistic centre to provide emotional support and practical help for people with cancer and their families. Therapies that will make a difference to the lives of those affected by cancer are also anticipated, including counselling services with fully trained, accredited therapists, stress management, therapeutic massage, reflexology, relaxation techniques and visualisation and yoga.
Regular information meetings are held as the project progresses. For details or information on Youghal Cancer Support Group: 087-2731121.

Between July 30th and August 6th the team of two women and six men undertook ‘climb, cycle, canoe,’ an enormous challenge across eight days. Through variable weather conditions, they climbed Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrantuohill (15km), cycled 220km round the Ring of Kerry and canoe’d 110 km down the Blackwater’ from Millstreet to Youghal.
The ‘extraordinary eight’ presented the fruits of their fundraising to the Youghal support group in the Gate bar, after which their achievement was celebration with much music and merriment. “It seems like only yesterday we were in the midst of it but the sore legs and numb bums are well healed,” smiled participant Jamie McCarthy who organised the venture. “We were very proud to support such a great cause.”

THE YOUGHAL CANCER SUPPORT GROUP held an innovative fundraising night on Saturday night, June 11th in the local Rugby Club. The theme of the night was a GiGi’s Reunion and the turnout and support for the event was fantastic.

A big thank you to DJ’S Mossie Tatten and Fergal Coleman for giving their services free of charge and helping to bring the musical memories of GIGI’S back. The Date Auction was different, innovative and needed courage to enter, so thanks to all who did. They were indeed very brave! The MISS GIGI’S competition was a great success and congratulations to popular winner, Silvia Flaherty, who was crowned Miss GiCi 2011. The worthy runner up Vickie O’Shea. To everyone who sponsored prizes for the night, we are very grateful. A special thank you to Youghal Rugby Club for their kind permission to use their great venue which was superb.
To all who came along to support our fundraising drive for Youghal Cancer Support Group, we must say a huge THANK YOU. Without your support, the night would not have been the great success it was. We do appreciate it.
