THE FRIENDS OF ST. RAPHAEL’S OPEN DAY took place yesterday (Sun. 10th July 2011). The popular event was packed with people, all in great mood, buying, chatting, eating, dancing on the grass and generally having a great time. The colourful plants were almost all sold, the book stall was doing great business, the burger vans were surrounded, the candy floss was swaying in the warm breeze and the mugs of coffee were being downed at a very fast rate. The book stall, spin the wheel and the face painting proved to be particularly busy. Report/Photo: YOL

The Friends of St Raphael’s Fundraising Committee comprises John Roche, Chairman, Frances O’Neill Ahern, Secretary/Treasurer and a very active committee who commenced making their arrangements and organisation back in February, working very hard  to make sure that everything is just right for the day.   The weather was beautiful, the live music was played brilliantly, Youghal Pipe Band did a wonderful set, neighbours met for chats and the residents of the hospital had a fantastic time.

An event such as this needs help from many people and huge thanks to the people of the town and surrounding areas who not only come along on the day to support, but also those who donate items, books, gifts etc.,  Also, for the wonderful home cooked pastries, cakes, scones, biscuits brought along which were very quickly snapped up.

Many of the staff gave up their Sunday to help out on the day and the Committee are very grateful to them.  Of course, one cannot forget the marvellous coverage supplied by CRY, and Barty Murphy who organised all the live stage entertainment for the day.

The Open Day was a huge success with so much activity going on thanks to the huge crowds who came along to support our own St Raphael’s.

Community Radio Youghal held its 2011 AGM at a well-attended main hall in Cumann na Daoine, Catherine Street on Monday 13th June. At last year’s AGM of Youghal Communications Ltd (the company that runs Community Radio Youghal), new Articles of Association were adopted, paving the way to open up membership of the station.

C.R.Y Chairman, Tommy Collins welcomed all present to the meeting and proceeded to get through the agenda. The AGM heard of much progress made during the year. There are over 100 members of Community Radio Youghal to date, and this figure is expected to continue to rise. Volunteer activity at the station is also on the increase, with some 130 volunteers active with the station at the moment.

The meeting was told how, in common with all other businesses in the area, the radio was finding the current business climate very challenging, but the station is keen to play its part in supporting local initiatives and events. Reference was made to the two top national awards won by the station since the last AGM – for the ‘Last of the Yarns’ series and the ‘Perspectives’ programme. Two more major series, supported by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland  will be made in the Autumn; one about life on and around the Blackwater and the other focussing on Youghal’s Heritage Trail.

Plans are at an advanced stage for a move to premises at Nagle House, where – subject to available funding – new studio facilities will be built. These will allow the station to better accommodate and facilitate its increasing number of volunteers and to provide a much improved service to the listener.

The meeting was taken aback when, towards the end of the AGM, Tommy Collins announced that he was stepping down as Chairman and from the Board. After several member present expressed their surprise and disappointment at this announcement, Tommy agreed to remain on the Board for the time being. However, he re-iterated his intention to step down from the chair at the next meeting of the Board.

A members’ draw was then held.

The Chairman then closed the meeting and invited all present to partake of some light refreshments.

He thanked Mike for his Chairmanship and for the professional manner in which he conducted it. The Parish owed Mike O’ Neill a debt of gratitude in the way he brought the Committee together and built and completed the Hall. We now have a hub where we as a very rural Community can come together and enhance the quality of our lives. The culmination of the whole project was of course the recognition given to our Community in winning the Pride of Place award; plans are underway to celebrate this with a function, more details later.
Votes of sympathy were passed to the following families on recent berevements,Eileen and Ger Mc Carthy Thompson, Ahearne Family, Lucey family,Mc. Sweeney familiy, Farrell Family and Long family.

YOUGHAL C.Y.M.S. under 14 snooker player Keane McCarthy is the winner of the 2010 ‘Wagon Wheel’ Cork under 14 Snooker Championship which was held in Fermoy CYMS last Sunday afternoon.

The tournament director for the event David Joyce, the current Cork Billiards and Snooker Association Chairman, David Joyce was congratulated on the manner in which he organised and ran the competition.

There was an entry of 15 players and every player can be praised for the immaculate attire which each of them turned up in and the sporting way in which they conducted themselves throughout the day.

After four hours play the Cork under 14 Championship reached the semi final stages where Keane McCarthy from the Youghal CYMS defeated Scott Donovan of the Crucible Snooker Club, by two frames to one.

In the other semi final Dean Callanan of the Crucible Snooker Club defeated his fellow club mate Calim O’Callaghan by two frames to nil.

Both Keane and Dean played excellent snooker in the final but the honours went to Keane on a score line of two frames to nil, thus bringing the title of ‘Under 14 Cork Champion’ and the silverware back to Youghal CYMS.

This week’s league games threw up some great results. The AOH were coasting at Morrison’s Island looking likely to take the scalp of the mighty Crucible, with both Greg Casey, Daniel O’Regan and David Cassidy all defeated by two frames to one it looked ominous for the cue men from Blarney Street, but this Crucible team have quality from one to five and in the end salvaged a great win after a powerful comeback.

Tony More won his game by three frames to nil over Tim Murphy levelling the match at six frames all and Ryan Cronin won by two frames to nil over Donncha Breathnach to secure a famous victory.

In the other matches Youghal CYMS ‘A’ had a breathtaking win over Douglas in the ‘Market House’ pushing themselves up one place in the league into an unassailable third place and a semi final place along with The Crucible and Shooters.

This defeat has almost certainly finished any hopes that Douglas had of a final four qualification spot, unless they Douglas cue men win their remaining three matches and Shooters suffer the AOH suffer three defeats, mathematically it is possible, but highly unlikely.

Shooters are safely through to the last four semi final matches and again showed their quality with an impressive victory over Youghal CYMS ‘B’ where Anthony O’Connor and David Forde recorded three frames to nil victories.

The disappointing news from the Cork Snooker Leagues point of view was another walk over conceded by Fermoy CYMS during week 11. That’s two walk over’s in two week’s which nobody likes to see, hopefully it is a minor blimp in what has been a fantastic return to competitive league snooker in the ‘Rebel County’.

The Cork Snooker league will play week 12 this coming Thursday night the 20th of January and then take a break for the Gleneagle Hotel-Ladbrokes Munster Snooker Club Championships in Killarney Jan 28/29/30 and will remain on a break the following week also, as the Gleneagle Hotel-Ladbrokes All Ireland Snooker Club Championships which will be also held in Killarney on Feb 4/5/6th.

The obvious reason for this break is if any of the Cork Snooker League Teams finish in the last four of the ‘Munster Championships’ they will qualify for the ‘All Ireland Championships’.

The League resumes after this break with week 13 on Thursday the 10th of February.
