Tuesday August 9th saw the climax of the Perks Entertainment Centre Talent Show, and it did not disappoint. Three previous heats saw contestants come from various parts of Cork, including holiday-makers and locals alike, to compete for a place in the Grand Final. Eleven contestants took to the stage to try and win the judges vote and walk away with the opportunity of a lifetime : a recording session with the Youghal based Claycastle Recording Studios who kindly sponsored the prizes for this event. The house was packed to the rafters and the exuberant crowd supported every act that took to the stage which contributed to the electrifying atmosphere at Perks Entertainment Centre. The high standard of talent on the night exceeded the judges expectations, with head Judge Keith Watkins commending the commitment of the performers and their parents dedication to their chosen talent . There was a variety of performances on the night including pop singing, hip hop dancing, a magic show, Irish dancing, classical dance acts and instrumental acts, with each act as passionate as the next.

The judges: Kevin, Carol and Keith

The judges: Kevin, Carol and Keith

Unfortunately there could only be one winner from each category : Age 6-11yrs : Robert O Regan (singing). Age 12-16yrs : Daniel Ryan (accordion player). But nobody went awy empty handed. Both contestants were popular winners with the audience and even gave an encore of their performances. All that is left for them to do is get in to the recording studio. You never know, maybe we have one of the next big names in music right on our doorstep. Eva Porter, Cork’s newest singer-songwriter.
Debut Album “Heart on My Sleeve”

It might seem strange that a mother of three, working in insurance, who had never done a gig, decided to record an album of her own songs but that’s exactly what Eva Porter has done. Eva has been writing songs since the age of twelve and has always had a passion for music but never took it further than home.
It was only when her then 6 year old son told her on a drive home one night, after they had been singing along to a song Eva had written, that he thought his mum should make a record, that Eva decided to give it go. 18 months ago the journey from singing her songs to her children to sharing them on her debut album “Heart on my Sleeve” began in earnest.
It started with a phone call to Eva’s uncle, Cork singer & soon to be co-writer Joe Corbett. Over the next year, Eva & Joe collaborated on the songs for the album. Brian Connor, Belfast keyboard player and producer whose credits include albums for Freddie White and Albert Niland, heard Eva’s demos and signed on as producer. Brian played keyboards on the album and assembled a line up of Ireland’s finest musicians to join him – Johnny Scott, guitarist, Rod Patterson, bassist and Danny Byrt, percussion.

The album was recorded in Sonas Studios, Glenflesk, Co. Kerry in December 2009. The album was engineered by Tony O’Flaherty of Sonas Studios and mastered by Ruairi O’Flaherty. Eva’s music reflects her wide range of musical influencesand love of folk, country and soul. “Heart on My Sleeve” was launched on Thursday 17th June at the Boardwalk Bar & Grill, Cork. You can find out more about Eva on her website www.evaporter.com or contact Eva on 087 217 4717 or at info@evaporter.com

You can view her EPK on http://breakingtunes.com/evaporter You can also listen see to samples of all 12 original tracks on website www.evaporter.com.

Since the album launch on the 17th June, 2010 Eve has been very fortunate to get airplay & receive favourable comments on The Neil Prendeville Show on 96FM, “The Blue of the Night” on Lyric FM, “The Late Date” on RTE 1, WLR FM, “Shades of Green” Tipp FM, “Sounds Country” on Radio Kerry, Dundalk FM where her album was album of the week, Cry FM in Youghal, UCC College Radio, Access 96FM Dublin & her album is on the playlist for C103FM where she had great support from Martina O’Donoghue & Colum McGrath who have had Eve on their shows as guests.

Eve has had have an appearance on Balcony TV and on Bandwagon TV. She also supported John Spillane in Oct 2010 and JACK L in March 2011 at the Lodge in Mallow, Co. Cork. Youtube videos of which can be seen on her Breakingtunes page. Eve also had good support from local press, Evening Echo, Cork News, The Southern Star, East Cork Journal and some national papers The Examiner & Irish Daily Star

January 8th 2011 saw Youghal’s Walter Raleigh Hotel packed to the rafters when The Sacred Roots ‘Y’ Factor final 2010 was held featuring some of the most talented young performers one is ever likely to see.
The twelve finalists six aged under fourteen years and six aged between 15 and 18 years, were hand picked from auditions held in The Hot spot Youth Center on december 18th with a winner picked from each category on the final night.

The acts in the final included singers, dancers and entertainers with some performing to live accompaniment and others to a backing track .
Lessons were certainly taken from this incredible night, which shows evidence of the huge amount of talent which abounds among the young people of Youghal.

A selection of artists and their tracks released with kind permission of each artist (recording and copyright belong to each artist respectively) to a) showcase the work of local and visiting artists that played at the sessions this year. we didn’t get everyone featured but more releases are hoped for next year including live recordings once we get new audio equipment for the marine which this cd is raising money for in order to make it more of a contender as a live venue.

Kudos to all the artists who played at the Marine, and contributed previously recorded material, thanks to Claycastle Studios for any extraneous recordings and mixes and masters, and to claire for her free time for artwork and other bits and bobs!

Looking forward to a year of great sessions plugged and unplugged in the Marine Youghal 2011. If interested in playing contact themarinesession@mail.com

The Youghal Arts Network are a very active group of people who, among other things, organise fund raising events to help voluntary clubs, organisations, groups, schools etc., in the town of Youghal who are in need of financial help.

South Abbey National School is a very old building which is school to as many children as it can possibly hold.   It is a proud school with a long history in the town. Originally a Church, the School was set up in the premises in 1886. Thus, there are massive expenses involved in keeping this beautiful building maintained and suitable for the children of the school.

‘Queen of the Sea’ 2010 winner Susie Fitzgibbon

Each contestant was first briefly interviewed by the MC in front of the judging panel and a large crowd of well wishers, supporters and admirers, who enjoyed the glamorous and colourful event despite the inclement weather.
All the girls were dressed in stunning dresses and the judging was almost impossible to pick, however, pick they had to, and this year’s Kerry Rose, Veronica Hunt, crowned local girl Susie Fitzgibbon with the inaugural ‘Queen of the Sea’ tiara. A stunned and delighted Susie was cheered and clapped by the other contestants and their escorts.

‘Queen of the Sea’ 2010 winner Susie Fitzgibbon presented with her cheque by Gavin Tivy and his son Neil from The Seahunter Charter boats and Warren Tivy from Claycastle recording studios, Youghal.

Susie was then presented with the ‘Queen of the Sea 2010′ glass trophy as a memento of the occasion, the sash, bouquets of flowers and a cheque of €500, sponsored by Gavin Tivy from The Seahunter Charter boats and Warren Tivy from Claycastle recording studios, Youghal.

The winner and the other contestants and escorts were then transported in a cavalcade of vintage cars to the nearby Mall Arts Centre, where they were greeted by the Mayor of Youghal, Mary Linehan Foley, and piper, Olan McCarthy from The Youghal Pipe Band.

Garry O'Sullivan, Dainia Foley, Mayor of Youghal, Mary Linehan Foley and her husband John

After the champagne reception, the ladies and escorts danced the night away in the ballroom to the fabulous music of the ‘Roaring Fortie’s Dance band.

The whole event went very smooth thanks to the organisers, volunteers, Garda, and local emergency services. Warren Tivy, from Claycastle Recording Studios, told Youghalonline.com that he was very happy and delighted to be one of the sponsors of this event. He said, “It proved very popular despite the weather, the whole community and businesses were behind the festival and that will help to make it even bigger again next year”. Congratulations to the ‘Raining’ Queen of the Sea.
