Officially launching the club, Mayor of Youghal, Cllr Michelle Hennessy, welcomed the initiative which continues a long tradition of interest in cinema in Youghal, and which truly brought a traditional cinematic feel to the unique venue. “Youghal is synonymous with the making of the internationally successful film Moby Dick, making the Youghal Cine Club a fitting initiative within the local community.” Said the Mayor. Special guest on the night was Michael Roche, who worked for 74 years in the Regal Cinema which finally closed its doors in August of 2010. Adding to the overall experience on the night was the newly purchased High Definition data projection dvd system and screen, also supported by Cork County Council.

Events Manager for ‘Yew Wood Venues’, Clodagh Mahon spoke at the launch about how the club would be rolled out: “In a nutshell, this cine-club, and the choice of films screened will be driven by its members, which is what makes cine-clubs so special. It is our intention to ideally run films every fortnight. We hope to make this an all-inclusive club, for members of all ages, possibly also running a Saturday morning screening for kids, and to also come up with a series of films to suit and appeal to our teenagers.
It is intended that after each screening the members would intend to have a group discussion on the film shown on the night, and agree on a series of films for the season ahead. Clodagh went on to explain what fees would be incurred: “Membership to the club will be free, with entrance to the films at €5 each. As we become more established, we will look at running ‘themed nights’ – eg: ‘Italian movie night’ with pizza and chianti!, said Clodagh.
Membership is limited and is through registration only. To become a member, contact Yew Wood Venues, Enterprise Youghal on: 024-81823, email themallartscentre@gmail.com or log onto the facebook page www.facebook.com/youghalcineclub.

‘Yew Wood Venues’ – Youghal’s Premier Venues is proud to launch the newly formed ‘Youghal Cine Club’, in The Mall Arts Centre, Youghal on Thursday 28th June 2012 at 7.30 pm with a screening of Oscar winning film, ‘The Artist’.
The Club will continue a long tradition of interest in cinema in Youghal, and will form part of ‘Access Cine Club’ which is the resource organisation for regional cultural cinema in Ireland. Speaking in advance of the launch, Events Manager, Clodagh Mahon commented: “This is a wonderful opportunity for us in Yew Wood Venues to bring cinema back to the people of Youghal once more. We have planned a season of monthly screenings of feature films, and the beauty of the club is that the choice of film will be driven by the members. Membership is free with a charge of €5 per show.” Said Clodagh.
Although a recently produced film, the launch film, ‘The Artist’ encompasses modern technology with the classic black and white film genre. The film is a silent movie, screened in black and white and projected in the old-fashioned boxy Academy ratio, with its occasional lines of dialogue printed on intertitle cards. It falls into the long tradition of movies about the movies, and centres on an established film star and a beguiling young actress in late Twenties and early Thirties Hollywood, during the rise of the talkies.
Youghal Cine Club hopes to encourage those with a love for cinematic art to become active members. Ian McDonagh, Arts Officer with Cork County Council congratulated Yew Wood Venues for their initiative insisting the venture was a ‘very valuable development for film in County Cork’. Cork County Council is one of the key supporters of the club.
A full house is expected for the launch night for the screening of the Artist and entry will be through registration in advance only. To guarantee your seat contact Clodagh at Yew Wood Venues, Enterprise Youghal on: 024-81823, email themallartscentre@gmail.com or log onto the facebook page www.facebook.com/youghalcineclub.

Yes, it’s definitely Christmas! Santa is here! Santa certainly visits boys and girls around the world in many different ways, but on Saturday 3rd December 2011, Santa made a spectacular entrance on water with the help of local sailing school, Aquatrek to the Quayside in Youghal. Organised by Youghal Town Council’s Heritage Committee, Santa was transported on horse with his ‘one horse open sleigh’ to The Mall Arts Centre for an afternoon of free fun and festivities where the children of Youghal were treated to a ‘free’ Santa visit.

Santa made a spectacular entrance on water with the help of local sailing school, Aquatrek to the Quayside in Youghal.
Hundreds of kids turned out to greet Santa on the day, which saw the Youghal Pipe Band give of their time to accompany Santa to Market Square in the town for the turning on of the Christmas Lights. The occasion was made all the more special with a blessing by Canon Browne of the Christmas Crib which was presented by Youghal Chamber of Tourism & Development. Speaking about the event, organiser Clodagh Mahon thanked all those who assisted in making the event possible. “This event was meant to really lift the spirits of the families of Youghal and I really believe we managed to achieve that even for one day. We wanted to take the pressure off many hard-pressed families, providing a ‘free-Santa’ visit on the day. Our sponsors once again allowed us to undertake an entirely free event, really demonstrating the community Christmas spirit in the town.”
Local Mum, Zara Kelly was thrilled with the day, commenting: “Well done to everyone involved in the festivities. It was a fantastic day and very well organised and run by those involved. My 3 year old woke up this morning and said “Mom and Dad, thank you for my lovely day yesterday”. Her smiles were all down to the hard work ye put into it. Thanks so much to all involved.

Following on the party atmosphere, the stunning surroundings of Youghal’s 13th century St. Mary’s Collegiate Church played host to the inaugural Medieval Christmas Market on Sunday 4th December 2011. With over 1200 people attending the event, it proved to be a one-stop shop for all Christmas gifts with in excess of 15 first class indoor stands on show. The magnificent setting showcased craft and food products of the highest calibre, including quality textiles, pottery, children’s medieval themed arts and crafts, jewellery, fine art, sculpture, confectionary, jams and preserves, cheeses and many more. Warmed mulled wine was on hand to warm the cockles of visitors as they browsed and was very gladly received by the visitors! This event was proudly organised by local volunteer, Catherine Desmond of the Youghal Heritage Committee. “We were really thrilled with the turnout on the day, and hope to build on the success of this year in years to come. This venue is such a wonderful setting, and is just another event in the calendar year to celebrate Youghal’s Medieval past, following on from the annual Medieval Festival each August.

Sixteen members of The Enterprise Centre in Youghal, Co. Cork got a fantastic surprise when they realised they had matched five numbers plus the bonus number to win €25,000 in the Lotto draw on Saturday 20 August. The lucky syndicate, who purchased their ticket in Tesco, Youghal, have been playing together as a group for over six years. They were only one number away from winning the jackpot prize of €4.5 million.

The lucky staff members in the winning group are: Catherine Desmond, Helen Coady, Margaret Ryan, Lorraine Hogan, Noreen McKernan, Mary Carson, Aileen Murray, Clodagh Mahon, Mary Murphy, Carmel Best, Ruth Howard, Sam Garvey, Irene Hennessey, Sinead Goggin, Louise Scanlon and Helen O’Brien.
“We all feel extremely lucky at the moment; it’s a lovely amount to win. All of the mother’s in the group were delighted with the windfall as our children are all going back to school this week and it’s an expensive time of year for every mother,” said Catherine Desmond, one of the members of the syndicate, at today’s photocall in Youghal.
The Enterprise Centre opened its doors in Youghal on Friday 28 November 2008. The state of the art enterprise centre nurtures indigenous small business in the Co. Cork area and is designed to provide a supportive environment to local enterprises, while encouraging them to innovate and grow.
While all 16 staff members expressed themselves ‘delighted’ with their win, no one has yet decided what to do with the windfall. A good staff night out is ‘definitely on the cards’, to celebrate.
Over 1,000 people were on hand to welcome Santa to Youghal as he made a spectacular entrance on water on Saturday 4th December 2010. The arrival ceremony and subsequent ‘Free Santa Visit’ in Youghal Town Council’s Mall Arts Centre kick-started the seaside town’s annual Christmas festive season celebrations. Speaking afterwards, the main organiser of the event, Clodagh Mahon of Youghal Heritage Committee commended and thanked all the sponsors and volunteers who worked so hard in delivering the free event to the town. “This year more than ever before we were determined to take the financial pressure off families with a free event, and we believe we succeeded in doing just that. There was a great atmosphere throughout the whole day, with kids and adults alike in wonderful spirits. Santa’s arrival with Aquatrek was spectacular to begin with and it just continued from there with hundreds of kids meeting Santa and promising him to be on their best behaviour for the next few weeks!” said Clodagh.
Following his high speed boat trip across Youghal Bay, Santa was delivered by horse and carriage to The Mall Arts Centre for an afternoon of free fun which was open to the public. Hoards of kids of all ages enjoyed the festivities until 4.30pm with a ‘free Santa visit’ and gift of a selection box, courtesy of ‘XL’ Convenience Store in Youghal and Tesco Youghal, together with a photograph courtesy of Irwins, Kodak, Youghal. Activities included face-painting, mingling with the cast of Aladdin, all to the tunes of Youghal’s wonderful ‘Barty’s Disco. Performances by the wonderful Youghal Youth Orchestra and Youghal Choral Society only added to what was an afternoon of true Christmas cheer!
Not to be forgotten, Mums and Dads sipped on warmed mulled wine kindly sponsored by ‘Next Door Wines’ and mince pies provided by Collins Bakery & Le Gourmet.
At 4.30 pm Santa led the nationally renowned Youghal Pipe Band on their march to Market Square for the official turning on of Youghal’s Christmas Lights.
Organisers wish to extend a sincere thank you to its many sponsors which enabled the event to be undertaken. These included: Youghal Town Council, The Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group, Youghal Credit Union, Youghal Heritage Committee, Aquatrek, Barty’s Disco, Next Door Off-Licence, Youghal Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, Collins’ Bakery, Le Gourmet, Tom Morley (Horse & Cart), Community Radio Youghal, Irwin’s Kodak, ‘XL’ Convenience Store, Tesco, The Youghal Youth Orchestra, Youghal Choral Society, The Cast of Aladdin (Graham McDermott School of Dance) Youghal Pipe Band & Woodland Print & Design,
