Crucible Snooker Club win the Orme Shield. – By Derek Kiely
IN an action packed weekend for Cork snooker, we saw the Orme Shield 2013 take place at its spiritual home Youghal CYMS and the second division one ‘Cork Billiards and Snooker Association’ (CBSA) semi final took place at Douglas snooker club.

Orme Shield Champions 2013: Greg Casey, Ryan Cronin, David Cassidy with the Orme Shield and Jimmy Hussey owner of the Crucible Snooker Club in Cork City, pictured at the presentation ceremony in Youghal CYMS
Firstly the Orme Shield made its return to the ‘Market House’ in the seaside town of Youghal where Youghal CYMS were the host club for this extremely prestigious three person team event.
The competition spans over three days starting last Friday night and finishing up with the final last Sunday afternoon.
The competition went mainly to form, but during the Quarter Finals Fermoy CYMS took a big scalp defeating Douglas A to set up a semi-final match with the host clubs A side after Youghal CYMS defeated their fellow club mates Youghal CYMS in their quarter final encounter.
The other side of the draw saw the AOH progress through to the semi finals after beating the strong Youghal CYMS B side and the much fancied Crucible who won this event two years ago had a fairly easy passage through to the semi final defeating the Crucible C side en-route.
The first semi final saw the Youghal A side through to the final, but it wasn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination, with Fermoy losing out on one match when Brendan Cooney defeated Tom Aherne, but Fermoy CYMS star Daithi Whelan levelled the match with a win over Youghal’s Christopher Cooney.
The semi final was tied at two matches each and two frames each as Aaron Tobin from Youghal took on Fermoy’s Alan Cleary, but in the end the young Youghal man had enough in hand to see the host club through.
In the other semi final the AOH took on the Crucible was a match that saw these sides play each other in key matches for the third time in the last 12 months as they met in Killarney, last seasons league final and the Orme Shield semi final and the Crucible side had the upper hand in the two previous meetings.
The Crucibles David Cassidy started well against the AOH’s Shane O’Mahony and Greg Casey was in top form against the AOH’s Lyodd Myers, with both Crucible players getting of to a two frame lead in each match.
On the other table Gary Bracken and the Crucible’s Ryan Cronin were evenly matched with a frame each in their match.
The very exciting semi-final saw Cassidy defeat O’Mahony, but a spirited fight back from both Myers and Bracken forced this one to the wire, before Cronin eventually potted the all important black ball to send the Crucible into the final where they met Youghal CYMS.
The final was in a sense a three man dress rehearsal for this weeks CBSA league final, with father and son Brendan and Christopher Cooney and Aaron Tobin playing against the Crucibles Ryan Cronin, Greg Casey and David Cassidy respectively.
Casey was in awesome form in the final winning his match against Christopher Cooney by three frames to nil. Cassidy also showed great form throughout the tournament and took a two frame lead against Tobin. Brendan Cooney showed all his experience against Cronin leading by two frames to one frame, but it wasn’t enough as Cassidy sunk the vital ball to win the Orme Shield.
Last Thursday evening saw the Crucible progress through to the CBSA Garry McCarthy League Division one final after a three matches to one match victory over the AOH at Douglas snooker club.
The men from Blarney Street are just one match from retaining their league title, but a resurgent Youghal CYMS team stand firmly in their way.
Youghal who have already defeated the Crucible at home and away earlier in this season league campaign.
This final will take place this coming Thursday evening at 8pm in Douglas snooker club and if anyone is brave enough to call this one then fair plat to them, because this I think will go down to the very last ball.
Next week on Cork Snooker we will have a full report from the league final.

Schools Visit
Many thanks to 2012 Cork Ladies captain Rena Buckey who visited all of the primary schools recently with the Brendan Martin Cup and spoke to all the pupils, signed autographs and posed for multiple photos. The Club was really honoured to show case one of Cork’s current All-Stars in our town and her visit has already encouraged some more girls to try out our fantastic game. To all local schools, Club officers who organised and accompanied Rena on the day many thanks for your time and effort which was appreciated by all pupils.
U16GFL Eochaill 4-8 Watergrasshill 1-4
Youghal travelled to Watergrasshill for their first game of this years league,on a wet cold day. The weather did not dampem the girls performance and ran out easy winners. This was helped somewhat that watergrasshill could only field 13 players so it was decided to play 13a side. It was the Youghal girls who got off to the brighter start by working hard for each other and taking some fine scores. The score of the half came when a long ball played out of defence was won by Shauna O Connell who turned her marker and made a good run to the 22 and kicked a high ball towards goal and it was Youghals Caira Crowley who won the ball and then turned the full back to drive a great shot to the roof of the net.
As the second half began the mentors made a number of changes, and it was very encouraging to see the girls coming off the bench to perform as good as the starting 13. The 2nd half was like a repeat of the 1st with Youghal well in control. With Youghal taking some more fine scores the signs are good for this young under 16 side. With our local derby with near neighbours Inch or next home game, this win was an important win to build confidence in this side. The Inch game will be played on sat 23rd of feb at 2p.m. Magners Hill.
Team; A.Arthur, N.Kelly, E.O.Brien, S.Kenelly, L.Dempsey, S.Monaghan, L.White, A.Macarty, C.Mulcathy, S.O.Connell, C.O.Keeffe, C.Crowley, C.O.Keeffe, E.Nolan, E.Farrell, K.Colman.

The theme of the week will be around developing proper football techniques and team spirit. “From an early age boys and girls need to be thought the techniques of football properly and that’s what we do”, says Charlie. “Underage structures, at county and club are the future of our game and any opportunity we can give to young players to improve their game the better. “Clubs whose players attend camps benefit in turn and for those new to the game it puts them in the right direction in a friendly atmosphere”. If interested please complete booking form from your manager before February 28th.
Youghal Ladies Football Club Notes YLFC Notes 03/03/2013
U16GFL Youghal 1-4 Inch Rovers 3-6
This was Youghal’s second leauge game of the year and we were up against local rivals Inch. It was a fine day and like the weather we got a fine display of football. Both teams went for it from the off but it was Inch who got of to the brighter start with two early scores, but then it was the turn of the the Youghal girls to get on the score board and before long youghal had overtaken Inch. This game was played at a high tempo and some fine periods of play was on show. The game would of been all square at half time only for a defensive mistake by Youghal just before the break that Inch took full advantage to leave the scoreline at half time 1-3 to 2-3 in Inch’s favor.
The second half saw a more determent Inch side take more control of this game, and were putting a lot of pressure on the Youghal defence. As the half went on Inch looked the fitter side and were picking off some fine scores. It must be said only that for our six backs and keeper who put in a super shift the score line could have been much higher in Inch’s favor.
Team: A.Arthur, N.Kelly,E.Farrell, S.Monaghan, A.O.Sullivan, L.Dempsey, E.O.Brien, L.White, S.Kenneally, C.O.Keeffe, S.O.Connell, C.Landers, C.Crowley, C.O.Keeffe, C.Mulcahy(C)

Youghal Ladies Football Club Notes
League Updates
Most of our teams are now up and running in the East Cork league. Our U12 B team were beaten by a much stronger Mayfield outfit on Sat 16th of March where the early damage of conceeding 2-3 in the first 5 minutes proved to be too much to overcome. After playing with a strong breeze and the hill, Mayfield lead by 4-12 to 0-0 at half time. In fairness to the Youghal girls they never gave up and kept trying until the final whistle where Mayfield ran out deserved winners on a score line of 7-13 to 1-1. Next up for our U12B team will be Cloyne. The remaining games in the league for this developing team will be against Delaneys, RockbanB, Bride Rovers, Glanmire B, Midleton, Inch Rovers A, Na Piarsaig, Fermoy A and Aghada.
Our U12A team will commence their lesgue shortly and have been grouped with Rockban A, St. Colmans, Carrigtwohill, Erins Own, Glanmire A, St. Nicks, Fermoy B, Watergrasshill, Inch Rovers B and Lisgoold.
On bank holiday Monday our U14s made the short journey to Killeagh to take on neighbours Inch Rovers who simply out classed the Youghal girls.
Peil Camp
Preparations are almost complete for our Peil Camp. Any outstanding deposits should be returned to your team manager over the next 2 weeks. The camp will run from April 2nd to 5th during the Easter Holidays and a few places still remain for any player who wishes to take part.

Youghal Cine Club Presents ‘Martha, Marcy May Marlene’
Thursday 25th October 2012 at 7.30 pm The Mall Arts Centre
“Sit tight for the unresolved killer ending”, so says Tara Brady film reviewer of The Irish Times of the latest in Youghal Cine Club’s offering: ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’, this Thursday, 25th October 2012 at The Mall Arts Centre Youghal.
Most of us probably know Elizabeth Olsen as the younger sister of the tycoon Olsen twins. After you see Martha Marcy May Marlene, you’ll know her as an actress of uncommon subtlety and feeling. Olsen gives a sensational performance in a gripping psychological thriller, from gifted first-time writer-director Sean Durkin, (Winner – Best Director, Sundance Film Festival 2011) that reveals its secrets in the silence between words.
Olsen plays Martha, a young woman we meet on the day she decides to run away from a cult located in the Catskills. Durkin and the skilled cinematographer Jody Lee Lipes present scenes of life in the cult farmhouse with a painterly serenity that only later flashbacks will dispel. After two years in this life, Martha calls her older sister, Lucy (Sarah Paulson), who unblinkingly offers Martha the comfort of the Connecticut lake house she shares with her husband, Ted (Hugh Dancy).
Adjustment doesn’t come easy for Martha, who thinks she can deprogram herself without telling anyone else about her ordeal. Durkin shows us Martha’s past in sequences of escalating menace. John Hawkes is indelibly hypnotic at conveying the brilliance and brutality of Patrick, the cult leader who seduces Martha into a life subservient to only one ego: his.
Gradually the film emerges as a mesmerizing meditation on identity. Paulson shines as a woman who can’t figure out who her sister really is. We share her impatience, especially when Patrick stages a violent invasion. But it’s Olsen, as a damaged soul clinging to shifting ground, who makes this spellbinder impossible to shake.
