SECAD takes part in STAR Awards Ceremony at the Burlington
‘Inspiring Communities – Time to Change’ Youghal
It was with great pride when SECAD learned that its flagship pathway programme ‘Inspiring Communities – Time to Change’ was shortlisted for the prestigious STAR Awards 2013 (Showcasing Teamwork, Awarding Recognition). The STAR Awards are an awards initiative coordinated by AONTAS as part of the annual Adult Learners’ Festival to acknowledge the fantastic work undertaken by adult learning projects throughout Ireland. The awards celebrate the positive contribution that these projects make to our society, our economy and our local communities.

All Munster Shortlisted Projects at the STAR Awards Ceremony: Front row (seated) fourth from left: Mary McCarthy (Time to Change Youghal participant 2011), Mary Sisk (Time to Change Youghal participant 2012), John Horgan, Chairman SECAD, Toni McCaul (SECAD programme coordinator), Catherine Ann O’Connell (Trainer LIT) Evelyn McGrath (Cumann na Daoine Community partner).
After a month of hard deliberation the independent STAR Awards Judging Panel drew up a shortlist of projects from 115 fantastic nominations. A total of 35 projects were shortlisted from the five categories; Ulster, Munster, Leinster, Connaught & Nationwide. The winners of each category were subsequently announced by John Lonergon (former Mountjoy governor) at the Awards Ceremony on 25th February last in Dublin. The ceremony was officially opened by Minister for Education & Skills, Ciarán Cannon.
SECAD attended the ceremony at the Burlington Hotel, represented by SECAD chairman, John Horgan & Programmes Manager, Toni MCaul. We were delighted to be accompanied on the day by two adult learners from the programme, Mary Sisk and Mary McCarthy, both of whom completed the Youghal programme. The delegation also comprised Evelyn McGrath from Cumann na Daoine, our local community partner in Youghal and our principle tutor on the programme, Catherine Ann O’Connell.
The ceremony itself was likened to the Academy Awards, which coincidentally had been held the previous evening, complete with drum-roll, spotlight cast on the winners, and full festive ambience in the packed conference centre. While SECAD’s nomination did not make the final cut and was outclassed in the end by Ballybeg Horticultural project in the Munster category, it was generally agreed that all shortlisted projects were winners on the day and a credit to furthering the cause of adult education and addressing inequalities in access to education and employment.

The brand new hour long documentary will be aired on Sunday the 27th of January at 1pm on CRY104fm and repeated on Thursday the 31st at 4pm.
“It stands in the centre of our town, a magnificent building that has seen it all and survived World Wars, the famine, floods, storms, emigration, and several recessions; a building which is a landmark in Youghal. A building which was the lifeblood of our community and provided employment to many over 400 years, and was the social hub and focal point of a town and a community that has seen its fortunes fluctuate over the years.

Merrick’s Department Store, once Youghal’s premier retail outlet, now lies empty, and is a stark reminder of the economic times that we live in. But the building also offers us a reminder of more prosperous times, when the town of Youghal had almost full employment with a thriving port and industries which were the envy of towns throughout Ireland and Merrick’s Department store was at the heart of this thriving community”
The launch took place on Monday the 21st of January at the Mall Arts Centre of “Merricks” a brand new hour long documentary celebrating the now defunct department store which served the people of Youghal for almost 500 years and pays tribute to the people who worked there and which will be aired on Sunday the 27th of January at 1pm on CRY104fm and repeated on Thursday the 31st at 4pm.
The programme captures key living memories of the building, the business and the life that was Merrick’s department store. The staff and management of CRY feel that this one hour documentary will will be a valuable archive of one of Youghal’s great institutions.
The programme also includes Vox Pops from former customers and also highlights the impact of the closure of Merrick’s has had on the town and the wider community. The huge old building that lies empty in the centre of the town is a bleak reminder every day of Youghal’s recent decline but also serves as a reminder of what a significant store Merrick’s was and might yet be again in the future.

The Crib at St. Raphael’s will be open to the public from Christmas Day onwards between 10am and 5pm. Fr. Joe McGuane, Chaplain St. Raphael’s Centre will celebrate The Christmas Day Mass at 10am and Christmas Carols will be sung by The St. Raphael’s Staff Choir.

The Crib in St. Raphael’s Church, Youghal, has always been a place to visit for the people of the town and surrounding areas and much work has gone in to the building of this magnificent structure by the staff of St. Raphael’s Centre, who have dedicated many hours on the decorating of The Nativity scene for the adoration of the birth of Jesus for the people of the town. Youghal people in times past fondly remember praying at the crib and taken a strand of straw from the Manger as a memento of this most Holiest occasion on the birth of Jesus. Many churches leave the manger empty (without the baby Jesus) until Christmas Day to reflect that Jesus has not yet been born before then.

History of Youghal
Youghal is steeped in history, from St. Coran to the Franciscans and Dominican Friaries to Walter Raleigh and Oliver Cromwell. Youghal is a place of faith and its history is marked by the faith of so many lay faithful, religious and clergy who have served Christ and his Church faithfully; one such faithful servant was, Blessed Dominic Collins.
Today the faith continues to survive, though in different circumstances. The parish is unique in that it has 3 Churches in the town within a mile of one another and 1 Church in the Gortroe, country area of the parish. The parish welcomes many holiday makers and visitors from Easter to winter. Many come to experience the Historical town, but many others come for the beautiful beach, and relaxation. Youghal has a great reputation as a ‘Caring Town’, for within the parish boundaries, many people who are ill or elderly are looked after in the various homes, hospitals and houses. The Parish offers support and the Sacraments to the residents and patients.
The Parish has three Catholic primary schools, one second level school, and two religious communities. At the present moment there are four priests ministering to the parish. Many lay people are involved in the pastoral activities of the parish; eg. ministering to the sick, baptismal team, Legion of Mary, Pioneers, Lectors, Ministers of the Eucharist, Choirs, First Holy Communion and Confirmation preparation, etc.
The Parish has a long history of faith going back to the 6th century. A great treasure has been handed on from one generation to the next. We continue that tradition and look for ‘new ways to pass on to young people the beauty and richness of friendship with Jesus Christ’, (Pope Benedict XVI letter to Catholics in Ireland).
Here are some important dates in the life of Youghal Parish.

Well known chef and author Rachel Allen launches the Cork RNLI Lifeboats Charity Reindeer Run
The RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea, has joined forces with well known chef and author Rachel Allen to launch the RNLI Reindeer Run. Cork has seven RNLI lifeboat stations located at Ballycotton, Youghal, Crosshaven, Courtmachsherry Harbour, Kinsale, Baltimore and Castletownbere. Together, they launched 154 times last year and brought 153 people to safety.

On your marks: Rupert Hugh Jones, Jasper Hugh Jones, Rachel Allen and Barry McDonald are all set for the Cork RNLI Lifeboats Charity Reindeer Run 2012
The Cork RNLI Reindeer Run will take place at Fota House and Gardens outside Cobh on Sunday 25 November. All abilities and ages are catered for with participants choosing from a 5km or 10km walk/run or a shorter Santa Saunter. To get into the Christmas spirit all participants are given a pair of novelty antlers to wear and an RNLI Reindeer Run t-shirt. Rookie the Reindeer Run mascot will also be on hand throughout the day to join in the fun.
Rachel Allen has joined lifeboat volunteers to call on runners and walkers of all ages to join in the fun and sign up for the Reindeer Runs. Rachel is a long standing supporter of the RNLI and is familiar with the life-saving work of the charity, living close to Ballycotton lifeboat station.

Rookie the Reindeer, Rachel Allen and Rupert Hugh Jones at the launch of the Cork RNLI Lifeboats Charity Reindeer Run 2012
Speaking at the launch for the RNLI Reindeer Run Rachel said, “I and my family watch as the volunteers launch their all-weather lifeboat on exercise every Wednesday evening. When we see it launch at any other time, we know the callout is for real. We are so lucky to have a service like the RNLI which relies completely on the generosity of the public and voluntary contributions. The Reindeer Runs are a great way for the whole family to have fun while helping the charity to save lives at sea’.
Eileen Kearney, RNLI Community Fundraising Manager is encouraging entrants to register early as places are limited and likely to fill up fast. ‘This is the second RNLI Reindeer Run in Cork and the third one to take place in Dublin. They have become hugely popular and are now a major event on the charity’s Christmas calendar. Irish lifeboats are busy all year round but some of their most challenging callouts occur over the Winter months. While others will be enjoying the Christmas festivities with their loved ones, we know that somewhere RNLI lifeboats will be launched to help save lives at sea’.
Entrants for the Cork Run are asked to register online at rnli.org/reindeer. The closing date is Friday 23 November. The registration cost is €9 for the Santa Saunter, €20 for 5km and €22 for 10km. All children under the age of five are free. There will also be prizes for the best fancy dress.
