In the Commissioned Programming category, Blackwater, Life and Lodgings scored very highly to scoop its award. The judges described the five part series about life on and along the Blackwater as: “Beautiful audio and scripting in a compelling programme”. They added that “the production values were superb and worth repeating on stations nationwide”. Edited by Justin Maher and narrated by Mervyn Scott featured historians, Kieran Heffernan and Frankie Mills and renowned navigator, Tony Gallagher. This is the second successive year that C.R.Y has won an award in the Commissioned Programming category.

Jazz on 104, presented by Tony Sheehan won an award in the Specialist Music category. The submission included a part of the programme’s Culture Night special. The judges said that Jazz on 104  was a “Great example of how specialist music can engage with the Community using an open mic night as part of culture night. Smooth presentation and well researched. This innovative programme was a pleasure to listen to”.

A new programme to C.R.Y in 2011, GAA This Week was a winner in the Sport category. GAA This Week was devised, produced and presented by Derek Kiely. In its first season on air, the programme reached out to every GAA club in the East Cork area, featuring club profiles, interviews, discussions and much more. The series ran the full GAA season from March to November. The judges said that GAA This Week was “Well presented. Great community involvement”. They also said it was an “excellent example of Community sports programming.”

C.R.Y Station Manager, Declan Gibbons congratulated everyone involved in the research and making of these award winning programmes. He said that the “success in this year’s awards scheme is further recognition of the excellent programmes that are being made by C.R.Y volunteers and staff in conjunction with local organisations and members of the community”.

The Centre will also offer help and support to their friends and family. The group wants to offer this service to everyone in East Cork and West Waterford, providing a range of therapies  and advice. It will cover Clashmore, Ardmore, Dungarvan,Tallow, Cappoquin, Lismore, Youghal, Killeagh, Castlemartyr, Midleton, and all townlands in between. Community Radio Youghal (CRY 104fm) meanwhile are planning to relocate from their existing premises in Cumann na Daoine to Nagle House, South Abbey in order to better serve the community. The new premises will provide better training facilities for Volunteers and Community groups. These facilities will allow greater access to Studio equipment and technical training for volunteers and for those who wish to gain experience in broadcasting and the media.

C.R.Y 104fm Station Manger, Declan Gibbons is looking forward to the station hosting the Radiothon. ‘We hosted an all-night Radiothon last December, to help raise much-needed funds for local boy, Keith Phelan and that was very well supported by station volunteers and by the local community.

This event really will be a marathon though – 50 hours of live radio, all provided by volunteers!

‘We’re delighted to partner with the Youghal Cancer Support Group. They are seeking to provide a vital service in Youghal for people from all over our listenership area, so it makes perfect sense to support them. Volunteers from both organisations will be involved throughout the 50 hours and we hope that people will respond generously and get into the spirit of the Radiothon”, he said.

CRY continues to work closely with the students in Pobail Scoil Na Trionoide and it is fitting that Pobail Scoil students will launch this epic Radio Marathon on the Friday morning.

There will be on street collections during Friday and Saturday and Collection boxes will also be placed in shops throughout Youghal town beforehand so if you want to play a request for yourself or your friends and family throw a Euro in the box and fill out the request form and all proceeds will go to these two worthy causes.

And don’t forget all your favourite CRY presenters will be keeping you entertained throughout Friday and Saturday night, May 27th and 28th.

Youghal Credit Union Ltd. held its AGM in the Walter Raleigh hotel on Tuesday November 23rd. The well attended meeting heard of the successful Youghal Credit Union had in the previous year. Pic: www.youghalonline.com

Chairman John Colbert

The Chairperson, John Colbert, reported to members that the credit union had 14,000 account holders who held a total of €70 million in savings and borrowings of €41 million. Youghal Credit Union Ltd. is “safe, strong and secure” he commented.

Overall the level of savings and loans was comparable to last year. The total income received by the Credit Union marginally increased from last year’s figure. The total of loans granted did, however, drop from €15.9 million in 2009 to €13.9 million in 2010. The decrease represented a more cautious attitude by members to borrowing in the current economic climate. The Chairperson noted that the borrowings hopefully added to the growth of the local economy. He also mentioned the involvement of the Credit Union in being a major partner in funding the local enterprise centre.

The Chairperson reported that credit control was becoming a major issue with the current levels of unemployment and the general downturn in the economy. As a prudent measure the Credit Union has increased the provision for bad and doubtful debts by €1.3 million in line with the Regulator’s recommendation. He urged members who face difficulties to contact the Credit Union immediately. In light of the large provision for bad and doubtful debts the remainder of the year’s surplus was used to increase other reserves. A dividend of 075% was proposed along with an interest rebate of 10% on interest paid last year.

The Treasurer, Karl Flavin, read through the accounts and was pleased to announce that Youghal Credit Union Ltd. recorded a surplus of €1.29 million for the past year. Other highlights reported by the Treasurer included loan interest income of €3.4 million and investment income received amounting to €1.75 million which represented a 7% increase on 2009.Bad debts written off increased to €679,000.  The Treasurer reiterated that these written off loans are vigorously pursued.

Guest speaker Declan Gibbons from CRY and manager Barry Treacy

Following on from the treasurer’s report all the various committees reported on their activities during the past year. The guest speaker was Declan Gibbons from CRY who outlined their programme for the coming year. Declan thanked Youghal Credit Union Ltd. for their continued financial support for CRY over the years.  A draw was held for members in attendance and the prizes comprised of a number of Youghal Chamber shopping vouchers for local shops.

Community Radio Youghal has a new logo. A few months ago the call went out to some local graphic designers and artists to come up with some ideas for a new logo for Youghal’s favourite radio station.
Photo: Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com Email: news@youghalonline.com

The new CRY Logo is unveiled by the CRY team: Claire Regan who designed the new CRY logo; Yvonne Smith, Admin; Evelyn McGrath, Cumann Na Daoine; Noel Cronin and station manager Declan Gibbons. Kneeling: Colin Durkin and John Butt

The brief was simple, A logo that was eye catching, modern and was representative of the town and local area. In the end  the work of three designers came under consideration, Nigel Robertson, Mike Walsh and Claire Regan who all came up with really good ideas and some very innovative designs.

Claire Regan who designed the new CRY logo with station manager Declan Gibbons

A CRY committee was assembled to deliberate on the designs and in an effort to gauge public opinion A facebook poll was also carried out . Nigel Robertson’s “Sunset logo”  was the early favourite but Claire Regan refused to be beaten and at the very last minute made one final submission which was the unanimous choice of the panel.

The new CRY Youghal Local Radio Logo

CRY104fm would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to Claire for her hard work and dedication not only on the logo but also in the different projects she is currently involved in with the radio station . The Station is delighted with its new logo and free bumper  stickers are now available in our offices in  Cumann Na Daoine.
