ON Monday Night the 9th of January (2012) Youghal GAA Club held its first committee meeting with a very large attendance.

The new Chairman of Youghal GAA Club Ger Motherway welcomed everyone along to the meeting and looked forward to the year ahead with a positive sense of purpose to make this year the best so far and with the commitment of everyone involved he hoped for a very successful year both on and off the pitch.

Among the hopes for the year ahead was that the Premier Intermediate Hurlers could go one better this year and that the Intermediate Footballers could go all the way too in their Intermediate Football Championship.

There was also the discussion of the amalgamation of the Youghal Ladies Football Club and the Youghal Camogie Club coming together under one umbrella into Youghal GAA Club, an issue that will be discussed in more detail in the weeks ahead.

Youghal GAA Club also are preparing themselves for a hectic year ahead as the victorious Junior Footballers prepare for Junior ‘A’ Championship and League Division One football after their promotion following the double success last year.

There was no winner of the Youghal GAA Club Lotto of €14,250 the numbers drawn were 3, 6, 10 and 16. €200 shared by Mary Aherne, Rion Barry, Collete Steile, Moira Nolan, Lucy Kenneally and Ronan Monaghan. The Sellers Prize went to Ger Motherway. Next weeks Youghal GAA Club Lotto stands at €14, 510. Go Raibh maith agat as do thacaiocht.

Finally Youghal GAA Club wishes to extend their sincerest sympathy on the recent passing of Jerry O’Regan who will be sadly missed by everyone at the club.

Jerry was a stalwart of the club and was part of a seven man group who originally purchased the grounds at Magners Hill and was an integral part of the success of Youghal GAA Club.

In the words of John Parker, “He was a remarkable man”. Jerry was a true Gael and a man who will stand long in the memories of all who enter the gates of Club Arás and Copperalley as one fantastic Youghal GAA man.

Youghal progress through to the East Cork Junior ‘B’ Football Final – By Derek Kiely in Killeagh

Youghal 0-11

Aghada 0-08

LAST Friday at Pairc Ui Chinneide in Killeagh the semi final replay of the East Cork Junior ‘B’ Football Championship was won by Youghal after an impressive display against Aghada.

Derek Kiely reports

Derek Kiely reports

In the original semi final Youghal felt that they had left it behind them on the night, but last Friday night’s performance was far superior from the Youghal boys and in the end they were good value for the win.

Unlike the original match Youghal started far better with lots of possession early and after just two minutes of play Daniel Savage had the first white flag raised in the match with a very well taken ‘45’ for Youghal.

Over the next four minutes Youghal had kicked two wides and Aghada got themselves into the match and levelled with a very good point from play off the boot of Padraig Wall.

Both sides cancelled each other out over the next eight minutes with both Youghal and Aghada kicking several wides.

Alan Frahill O’Connor then settled Youghal nerves on the 16th minute with a well taken free to re-gain the lead. Then seconds later the Youghal men struck again with a great score from Andrew Sheehan from miles out to establish a two point lead.

Youghal dominated the ball for several minutes after that score, but had to wait until the 25th minute to add another score from Keith McCarthy, then instantly from the resulting kick out Youghal had another point from Alan Frahill O’Connor to establish a four point lead, but on the stroke of half time the margin was reduced to three points when David Creedon pointed from play.

Creedon was on target just seconds into the second half with yet another pin point accurate free for the Rostellan men, leaving two between the sides.

Click here to visit the Youghal GAA website

Youghal’s Adrian Curtin responded with a well taken free on the left side 35 metres out on the 35th minute. Then Curtin was on target just three minutes later from the same tight angle and the four point advantage was re-established.

Since the resumption of the second half both sides were level in terms of possession and both defences were on top. Creedon popped a free over for Aghada on the 39th minute, then amazingly Curtin made it three out of three from the same tight spot on the left side thirty five metres out again, which was a magnificent run of tough free’s for the Youghal man.

Creedon was proving deadly from the placed ball and rose another white flag on the 42nd minute and again there was a goal between the sides.

Youghal increased the pressure with 15 minutes to go, taking several close range shots but not finding a break through, down to some very good Aghada defending, but after five blocked shots Anthony Frahill O’Connor took the initiative close in and popped the ball over for Youghal.

Then incredibly from the same location on the pitch Adrian Curtin made it four long range pointed free’s out of four, this time dropping in off the goal post to give Youghal five point lead with twelve minutes remaining.

Padraig Wall sent a score from play over for Aghada on the 48th minute and Youghal’s full back line through the very impressive Philip Monaghan had to battle hard as the Rostellan men came in search of a goal.

Youghal needed something fast to keep the pressure off and with nine minutes remaining the outstanding Aaron Kenny sent Barry Goggin free and Goggin made no mistake putting the ball over.

Aghada weren’t giving up just yet and rallied with two late scores from David CAreedon from play and also a great score from Shane Wall, but Youghal didn’t panic and saw out the remainder of this game to set up an East Cork Final with Castlelyons on Sunday the 13th of November, with the venue to be announced.

There has also been fantastic support financially from Kevin Curtin, Mackeys Central Star and Brookes Super Valu towards the kit sponsorship for the team and last Saturday the club wanted to show their appreciation to these three sponsors by way of a presentation of a new Youghal Kit Bag and County Final commemorative jersey. Club Chairman Dave Kilgannon said “The buzz about the town in the last week has been fantastic, with an eight day turn around it focused everyones mind immediately on the final and it has been a very busy and exciting time at Youghal GAA Club. Finals are exciting and wonderful for everyone in the town and the surrounding areas, but they are expensive too and with that in mind I want to thank from the bottom of my heart, the businesses and supporters for their backing. I would like to single out Kevin Curtin, Noel and Kay Mackey and Ken Brookes his son Peter and the Brookes family for their support in sponsoring our teams kit for the final and the kit bags, it is a very generous gesture and we are very grateful”.

Determined to wind up his GAA presidency with a bang, Christy Cooney has rowed in behind a suggestion made by Dublin county chairman Andy Kettle that the All-Ireland finals should be brought forward a month to August to free up time for club championships.

“There is certain merit in that,” the Youghal native told RTE on Saturday.

“It will get consideration. Maybe in that type of situation we’d be able to run off our club championships in a calendar year… It will be discussed.”

Central Council is shortly expected to receive a report from the national fixtures planning committee which could recommend restricting the time-span of the marquee competitions.

Evening Echo Intermediate Football Championship
Youghal 3-08
Glanmire 0-08

By Derek Kiely in Rostellan

YOUGHAL progressed in some style last Saturday in the Evening Echo Intermediate Football Championship with a dominating second half performance in a much deserved victory over Glanmire in Rostellan.

Derek Kiely in Rostellan

Youghal got the dream start to this match, when Dave O’Mahony who was raining in on the Glanmire goal was tripped in the square by the Glanmire corner back Anthony Garvey in the third minute and referee James Dorgan signalled a penealty.

Paul Moylan stepped up to take the penealty for Youghal, sending Brendan O’Connell the wrong way in the Glanmire goal giving Youghal the early goal advantage.

Youghal playing with the elements in the opening half, struck again on the fifth minute when Ken Dempsey sent over a point from play from 50 meters out.

Then Glanmire got into their stride with three unanswered points in a five minute period all off the boot of James Murphy, one from play and two from placed balls, then Nigel Roche of Youghal had a score from the right wing on the 13th minute to give Youghal the two point advantage.

Glanmire’s Michael Cussen dominated a lot of ball in the opening quarter and was setting up some good attacks, but Glanmire were failing in the shooting department and Youghal who were slightly starved of possession took advantage of a break out of defence on the 17th minute when John Grace scored a beautiful point from play and Youghal had the goal lead again.

Murphy pointed from a free on the 23rd minute for Glanmire, but the last score of the first half came off the boot of Paul Moylan on the 30th minute to send Youghal into the half time break with a three point advantage.

The first half may have been a tight enough affair, but the second half was completely dominated by Youghal.

Moylan pointed from a placed ball on the 34th minute and when the very impressive Nigel Roche pointed from play seconds later Youghal had a five point advantage.

Glanmire simply couldn’t get the ball in the opening quarter of the second half and when Roche picked up the ball 30 meters out on the 37th minute he carved through the Glanmire defence and buried the ball into the top right hand corner of the Glanmire net and as a contest this championship game was over.

Moylan and Roche added further points to give Youghal a ten point advantage with just fifteen minutes remaining.

It took Glanmire 18 minutes to register a score in the second half when Daniel Molden pointed from play.

With a significant breeze at their backs in the second half Glanmire failed to take advantage of the elements and the Youghal full back line of Brendan O’Sullivan, Paul O’Driscoll and Alan Fox were impassable and Glanmire were restricted to long range efforts, with Michael Cussen sending one over on the 50th minute from 50 meters out.

Youghal GAA website click on image

Youghal’s response was impressive as they moved the ball back up the field eventually drawing a foul 13 meters out.

Paul Moylan’s free hit the post and rebounded into his hands, the second time he took the option of shooting for goal and finished in style to give Youghal and eleven point lead on the 55th minute.

Glanmire did get two late consolation points, one from James Murphy and the other from second half substitute Jonathan O’Callaghan, but it was a very impressive display by the Youghal side who coped with everything that Glanmire threw at them and looked controlled throughout the entire 60 minutes.

Scorers for Youghal: P Moylan 2-3, N Roche 1-2, D O’Mahony, K Dempsey and J Grace 0-1 each.

Derek Kiely reports for Youghalonline

Kevin sadly passed away a few years ago when he died after he suffered from Sleep Apnea and Kevin’s family and friends started a memorial day in 2008, but this time the family and the friends of the fondly remembered Youghal man wanted to do something more and with the dedication of one of his greatest friends Anthony O’Donoghue started to organise fund raising, sponsored prizes and sponsor cards to help raise funds towards a machine at the Mercy Hospital that can help with this condition.

Over 40 people turned up and played in the event and the organiser of the event Anthony O’Donoghue said “We wanted his (Kevin) memorial day to be a charity event from here on in, it certainly has grown over the last three years and I hope it gets even bigger and more people get involved. People in around Youghal have been very supportive and I want to thank them for their help and sponsorship, in particular this year to Mr Noel Mackey, he was brilliant”.

The red jacket for the winner was presented to the evergreen Paddy Yellop, who at 75 years young beat the field to the number one spot.

Mrs Phil Mangan the mother of the late Kevin Mangan said at the presentation “People have been great and I want to thank everyone who donated or helped in any way, Kevin Will never be forgotten with his great friends and if we can help to save just one life that would be brilliant”.

The event organiser is already getting ready for 2012 and going by the enthusiasm shown by the group to raise funds for the Mercy Hospital Foundation, this annual event is set to grow much bigger.

The presentation of prizes was held at Noel Mackey’s Central Star last Saturday evening and the top five winners were:

Youghal deservedly progressed through to the next round of the Evening Echo Intermediate Football Championship by the narrowest of margins on Saturday night – 14th May 2011- with a one point victory over Glanworth in a game with a touch of controversy late on.

Youghal's Intermediate Footballers 2011

Youghal's Intermediate Footballers 2011

There is no doubt, but Youghal deserved to win this one and got off to a tremendous start with three points scored after only two minutes of play and could have had a goal as well only for a top drawer save by the Glanworth keeper Thomas Fitzgibbon.
The first white flag was raised after just 41 seconds when Youghal wing forward Nigel Roche sent the ball over from a tight angle.
Immediately Youghal who were playing into the stiff breeze in the first half scored again straight from the kick out, this time the very impressive Conor O’Sullivan pointed to double the margin.
Again Youghal swarmed the Glanworth kick out and a ball to the left corner was met by Paul Moylan who slotted over the ball and Youghal couldn’t have asked for a better start.
Glanworth then had two scores from play from Michael Pierce, but back came Youghal again and Conor O’Sullivan was yet again on target with a superb point from play to re-establish the two point lead.
Glanworth’s best player by a mile, full forward Pierre O’Driscoll scored from a free, but in reply Paul Moylan sent a point over with a free after ten minutes of play.
O’Driscoll was on target again seconds later for Glanworth, but the excellent Ken Dempsey was on target himself minutes later for Youghal who were managing at this stage to keep the two point lead intact.

The next four minutes saw Glanworth score three unanswered points, a free and a point from O’Driscoll and on the 21st minute Michael Sheehan gave Glanworth the lead for the one and only time.
Youghal responded well and the defence was superb, dispelling wave after wave of attacks, forcing six wides out of the Glanworth forwards and when Youghal were awarded a free on the Glanworth ‘45’ few would have given Conor O’Sullivan a chance of getting the ball over, but a super strike saw the ball fly over and a white flag raised as the game was level and remained that way at the short whistle.
Youghal came out fired up and within seconds Paul Moylan had Youghal back in front with a well taken free. O’Driscoll levelled with a pointed free of his own some ten minutes later as neither side could capitalise on some scoreable chances.
Conor O’Sullivan slotted two free’s for Youghal on the 45th and 47th minutes respectively and it took another O’Driscoll free to narrow the margin to one point with nine minutes remaining.
Youghal got a free on the Glanworth ‘21’ seconds later for an off the ball incident, spotted by the Banteer referee Conor Lane and rather than just settle for the point, Youghal took a quick free into full forward David O’Mahony. O’Mahony turned brilliantly and drilled the ball into the goal to the delight of the large travelling support from Youghal, but it wasn’t quite over yet.

Click on image to visit Evening Echo Sports website

Click on image to visit Evening Echo Sports website

Paul Moylan then pointed a beautiful and crucial score for Youghal with seven minutes remaining, but then two moments of extremely poor refereeing, which could have had spelled disaster for Youghal.
Incident one concerned David Pyne of Glanworth falling untouched to the ground and a free was awarded and was duly slotted over by O’Driscoll.
Then a goal was awarded for Glanworth when it was clear to everyone in Castlelyons that the player who in the square scooped the ball off the ground into the net.
The referee consulted with his umpires for a minute, but despite the appeals of the Youghal players the green flag was waved and the goal stood.
With two minutes to go O’Driscoll made it a one point game with a pointed free, but despite late pressure Youghal held out for the win and Peter Queally’s men go marching into the next round.
Youghal’s Premier Intermediate Hurlers are in action in two weeks time ar Riverstown the home of Sarsfields where they take on Ballincollig, where Peter Queally is again the man in charge and this win in the Intermediate Football Championship will give the Youghal lads a much needed break from football and time to concentrate on Hurling.
