EILEEN McGOLDRICK: Eileen has been Painting and Drawing ever since she can remember. Her earliest memory is drawing on the coal hole door aged about three in Derby Street, in Belfast.
Eileen left Belfast and went to Birmingham Art college where she gained a BA Hons in Fine Art Painting, She then moved to Oxford where she continued to paint and work as a community artist and Tutor.
Eileen now lives and works in Youghal, Co Cork. The work on view here is all recent, and has been inspired by her return to Ireland. Eileen feels being an Artist has made every day an adventure, whereby she strives to explore the subject that she wants to represent, in what ever media she feels is appropriate. Eileen will work for months on an idea, or a feeling, by exploring it, following instinct, and relying on years of experience to create unique images that always excite, whether they are mixed media portraits, or an inner journey.

Martha Cashman
Ceramic and Porcelain Sculpture

Marthas most recent work is in glazed paper porcelain. Very fine kitchen utensils (non functional), some pieces interspersed with woven wire, carved birch and ash wood to accentuate and enhance the delicate white porcelain.  The pieces are either box framed using limed ash or hung simply from rusted nails.  Pieces from this body of work have been bought by the UCC Art Archive Collection, CIT Art Collection and the Crawford Student Collection.

Martha’s work pays homage to the teachers of her past.  “The farm helpers and local women who visited and helped my mother in the house. Their understanding of the daily running of a small farm holding impacted on me greatly and led me to appreciate and respect the land we took from daily.”

The ceramic pieces on the right have been exhibited in a travelling show titled Womanagh, inspired by irish rural teachings and a disappearing traditional style of living.

AN EXHIBITION of artistic works by Eileen & Will McGoldrick is currently underway at The Grain Store, Ballymaloe House, Shanagarry, Co. Cork. Officially opened by Tom Doorly at an exclusive launch evening on the 30th of June, the cleverly titled “Between a Rock and Good Place, continues until 17 July 2011. Housed in a restored 17th century farmyard building the exhibition presents the paradox of imagination and reality as subjects are explored both through paint and lens.

Captivated by colour. Pictured at the recent launch of a joint exhibition of works by local artists Eileen and Will Mc Goldrick is Siobhán Phillips from Youghal. Cork. Will and Eileen also own a gallery at 89 North Main Street Youghal. For more info www.mcgoldrickart.com

This unique exhibit consists of two main bodies of work. ‘Dreams’ by Eileen McGoldrick is a series of archival prints made from a mixed media journey exploring the sequence of the dream and ‘Irish Rock’ by Will McGoldrick is a photographic series based on work done over the past two years exploring the coastal rock formations of the South Coast, and in particular the East Cork / West Waterford areas. A selection of other works by both artists are also on display.

Speaking of ‘Dreams” Eileen explains her artistic concept saying “This journey will take one from entering the dream state, to confronting the different types of dreams, and experiencing the desire for the dreams to end. The final stage lifts one upwards, re-entering consciousness”. Contrastingly Will’s subject matter is very much a study of something more solid as he himself explains “When looking at rock, I am looking at its composition, light, colour and form. When these elements come together, and especially following a high tide, the rocks glisten with water, salts and oils that somehow work in a symbiotic way to reveal the vibrant colours, grains and striations. Smell and sound also play a major part in these experiences; the sea-weed, the salt air, the electric sound of the water running off shingle, or a minor thunderclap as a wave hit’s a rock in a corner. These all add to my journey when recording this project.  My aim here is to highlight to the viewer, the beauty that exists around us, and how nature has carved and painted places of sensory delight, that are just waiting to be found. Ultimately both ‘Dreams’ and ‘Irish rock’ exude a fascinating juxtaposition as contrasting concepts come to both compliment and provoke thought.

*Those who are unable to attend the exhibition are welcome to visit Mc Goldrick Art and Photography Gallery which is located at 59 North Main Street, Youghal, Co. Cork.

The credibility of Youghal’s main street as a commercial centre has been further reinforced with the opening of new photography and art gallery in a prime location. Consumers and fellow retailers alike on the beleaguered thoroughfare will welcome the advent of McGoldrick’s Art & Photography at 89 North Main Street. The site, adjacent to the Clock Gate, had been idle for mere weeks following the closure of the previous fashion accessories outlet.

Will and Eileen McGoldrick

Will and Eileen McGoldrick

Proprietor Eileen McGoldrick and her husband Will Nick have lived in Youghal for about eight years and reside in Strand Street. The Belfast-born couple have previously lived in Oxford and over past decades have developed an impressive reputation in the arts world, hosting acclaimed exhibitions in Oxford and London as well as Cork and Dungarvan on this side of the pond.

With a target market of locals and tourists, the location obviously is of prime relevance. However the “quality of natural light”, that flows through the front and side windows was a major factor in choosing location. Alongside selected manufactured illumination, the combination brings a focus of perfection to the works on display.

Variety

The inaugural exhibition stretches across photography, oils and acrylic, though the display will alternate monthly. Within the compact space, the visitor can browse, for example, on the astounding depictions of Helvic Head cliff faces and beach rocks, their shapes and pastel hues rendered unique and enchanting through the magic of Will’s photography. “One visitor said she admired ‘the aerial view of the Caribbean island,” smiles Will. “In fact it was a view of a rock from Ballycotton!”

Eileen’s inventive cross-media pieces offer the colourful surrealism begat from subjecting acrylic, cloth netting and scanning technology to an unfettered imagination. The results reflect ‘dream sequences’ but are subject to individual interpretation.

Elsewhere a photo of derelict fishing boat’s revealed layers of colours bear witness to its lives, competing for attention with the acrylic depiction of a woman in a black dress hanging white washing against a background of industrial rust. A rainbow finds the Ferry Point, Muckross Abbey stands sultry, Moby Dick’s pink perkiness is viewed from the Pier Head past the blue hue of a boat.

Other creativities are manifested book form, themed to unravel by the enamoured page. From envelope-sized originals of €8 cost to 30 inch square masterpieces of seventy times that value, the walls and shelves do their new home proud.

If the works are beautiful, they are complimented by their creators’ belief. “I have great confidence in selling art, if art can be sold, on Youghal’s main street,” says Eileen. Yet she equally yearns to create an oasis perhaps “where visitors can browse, with no pressure to buy” and where they can view art for art’s sake –evocatively reminding them of what derives from their own lives.

A big thank you to all those that came along to the opening of the McGoldrick Art & Photography Gallery on Friday (11th March), and showed their support. With a good steady stream of people throughout the day, it was good to take bookings for portraits, Art Classes (Adults & Children), and commissions; just the sort of opening day I had hoped for. I would also like to thank all those that sent cards wishing me every success, and especially to Susan & Barry at “Absolute Flowers” for their kindness and generosity. Also to the good people at ‘www.Youghalonline’, ‘Youghal News’, CRY, Mick Hussey, Christy Parker, and Ger Flanagan.
