Féileacáin would like to thank the Youghal community and surrounding areas for getting behind them and supporting them in running and walking the mini marathon in Cork on the 25th September. It was fantastic to see all the purple t-shirts in the cork mini marathon this year and Féileacáin definitively made their presence known among all the other charities.

“We felt very proud of everyone who took part”, said Liz Roche one of the founder members, ” We were very proud of our family and friends and people we had never met before all walking together united in the same cause.”

“Féileacáin are also very grateful to Aura Leisure Centre Youghal for all their support and help in getting the participants of the mini marathon, taking part for Féileacáin, fit and health. It made such a huge differences to all the walkers/runners to have the support of all the members of staff at Aura there with every step they took.”

Féileacáin would also like to thank Supervalu for letting them hold a bag packing in there store on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th September. Féileacáin would like to thank all the customers of Supervalu who dug deep into their pockets and supported Féileacáin over the two days of bag packing.

” The best part of the bag packing was talking to people who were interested to find out about the charity, people chatted, shared their stories and donated money. There was a lovely atmosphere in Supervalu for the few days we were there packing” said Brian Roche, “we are very gratefully to Steven O Sullivan for allowing us to do the bag packing, and his support was very touching. The amount raised for the bag packing was a staggering 1,881 this will go a long way to help the charity help bereaved parents. Thank you Youghal and Thank you Supervalu.”

From this money Féileacáin can put more memory boxes into maternity hospitals all over Ireland, these boxes are a comfort and support to parents who have just lost their precious baby. The boxes help them make memories and keepsakes for their baby .These little keepsakes offer them great comfort from such precious memories in the months and years that follow the loss of their baby . These parents must bury their baby but not their baby’s existences. It is so important to have photos and memories, something they can hold onto and look at. Féileacáin knows photos are so precious, as are the little foot prints and locks of hair. That’s why they work alongside the charity Now I lay me down to sleep and shops like Silverhaven and Precious Prints. Both these companies can turn these precious footprints into charms or Christmas tree decorations. These precious charms can be worn on necklaces and chains for parents to keep their little babies close to their hearts. They also offer 10% back to Féileacáin when people order from them and mention the charity, which helps the charity to reach out, support and help other grieving parents capture their baby’s precious memories.

Now I lay me down to sleep NILMDTS is another fantastic charity who works closely with Féileacáin and go into hospitals to make sure the parents have some beautiful photos of their precious baby, this is all done free of charge by trained professional photographers. Féileacáin and NILMDTS are two amazing charities who to amazing work and wouldn’t not be able to continue this without all the help they get from you the public. Thank you to everyone who both took part and raised money or to those who put their hands in their pockets and gave so generously.

On the 15th October Féileacáin ask if you would come together and remember all the babies and the families they left behind. Support and comfort one another while lighting a candle, in honour of International Wave of Light. International Wave of Light is where people from all over the world light a candle at 7pm for one hour. This results in a continuous wave of light, thought, and memory across the world for 24 hours in remembrance of all the children who die during pregnancy and shortly after birth. To show that they live on in their parents and families hearts and are “Always Loved, Never Forgotten”.

Féileacáin (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Association of Ireland) is coming up to a year since its official launch last October. Since the official launch the charity has grown from strength to strength. Féileacáin has helped many grieving parents and continues to do so everyday across Ireland with more hospitals coming on board all the time. Brian and Liz Roche two of the founders of the charity, who are both from the Youghal area asked on their friends and family to join them in walking the 30th Evening Echo Cork City Women’s 4M Mini Marathon for Féileacáin with them.

When they asked they never thought how many people would want to walk alongside them in memory of the precious little angels and the families they left behind. Not only friends and family, but the Youghal community have gotten behind them to raise funds and awareness for this very important charity . Youghal’s leisure center Aura has also got behind Féileacáin and everyone who is doing the marathon for them by offering them 2 days training a week with a trainer who is on hand to give diet advice as well as working out exercise plans for everyone.

“I’m very proud of our friends and family and delighted to see more people coming on board every week”, said Brian Roche ” it is great to all come together get fit and healthy while raising important awareness for our charity. We are so greatful to Aura for bring us altogether twice a week. Every week someone new comes over to us and asks us about our charity , because of all of us training together in our Féileacáin t-shirts . It is great to raise awareness in our locality and the larger surrounding area.”

“Aura Youghal Leisure Centre fitness team were delighted to support the Feileacain training group in their challenge” said Tracy Kenneally, Operations Manager, Aura Youghal Leisure Centre. “We have been delighted to see them all support each other and achieve the weekly goals. There is nothing more motivational than a common goal for a group to achieve, be it to cross the finish line or raise funds and awareness for Feileacain” said Tracy.

“It is our mission is to help people feel healthier, happier and better about themselves so no matter what a persons goal is and it is important to us that these goals are achieved” she added. Tracy went on to explain that Aura have recognised that not everyone wants to use a Gym and a pool and as a result have designed unique fitness programmes specific to the area that people want to workout. “We have listened to our customers and designed a range of results cards for example the “Splash Cards” are for the pool only and cover everything from just getting started in the pool right up to Triathlon training or even your own Aqua Aerobics workout!, or “Cardio”, “Core”, “20 minutes”, “Pick ‘N Mix” are a sample of the other range of cards”. If anyone is interested in learning more about this we would be only too delighted to give them a 4 week results planner which can use some of these cards.

As we all settle into the Autumn season we all begin to reflect on our fitness and healthy lifestyles. For anyone who thinks that they can’t change or that it’s too late… remember your future is in your hands and it’s never too late to start anything. You only have to take a look at the way this group have taken on board their challenges over the last few weeks and I have no doubt that they will have some very proud supporters waiting for them on the finish line.

“It has been a pleasure to support their cause” said Tracy, “if anyone is wondering how they can also donate to this charity we have a Sponsorship card at the reception desk in Aura Youghal Leisure Centre” or call us on 024-91614 for further details.

So as the marathon date comes  closer everyone is fitter and healthier and ready to walk or run the 4 miles.  It will be great to see all the purple t-shirts among all the other charity’s on the day. Each person taking part in the marathon for Féileacáin can add the name of the baby they are doing the marathon in memory of on the back of their t-shirt. Anyone wanting to donate online can find the list of fundraisers for Féileacáin on www.mycharity.ie .

On Sunday ( May 1st 2011) people  gathered at the Market square in Youghal, where the charity Féileacáin organised the inaugural ‘Walk to Remember’ marking ‘International Babylost Mothers Day’.The walk started in Australia over three years ago and now hundreds of people from all over the world help to mark the day, to remember not only the babies, but also to honor their families journey. The loss of a baby not only touches the parents and siblings, but the whole circle of love and support that surrounds the parents in their journey, this special day helped signify this and show how all these precious lives will be always loved and never forgotten.

Over 70 people came together in the Market Square, traveling from Cork city, Waterford, Skibbereen and of course Youghal and the surrounding area itself to mark this very special day. This special occasion was also marked around the world , with the International Babylost Mothers Day walk taking place in Australia, America, Canada, England and now Ireland has joined the list and hopefully it will grow from strength to strength with walks already planned for Waterford, Galway, Tralee and Belfast for next year.

For people who could not attend, Féileacáin also included their babies names on balloons with messages to be released at the end of the walk. Messages also came from America, Australia, New Zealand and Northern Ireland, Féileacáin attached these names and messages onto balloons to be included with the rest of the balloons released. Some people whose family attended the walk here, while their family members abroad also released balloons for them where they live at the same time. It is a very comforting thought to know that people from all over are reaching out to support one another

The day was overcast and rain hung in the air, but it wasn’t going to stop anyone taking part. Mothers, Fathers, Grandmothers, Grandfathers, Brothers, Sisters, Aunts and Uncles, cousins and friends all gathered to remember the babies who only touch their lives for a short while, but will be forever in their hearts. There were lots of smiles and laughter, tears and sadness, but most of all there was remembering and support and that is what the heart of Féileacáin is all about

Eyes welled with tears when messages to the little angles were being wrote. Some broke down and cried and were comforted by loved ones. Looking around you got to see how important every little angle was, no one here is ever going to forget their existence. It is so important to remember that support and tears are a part of the journey. Today gave everyone the chance to support each other on their journey. The walk started in the Market square and ended in the front strand with a beautiful little ceremony before the balloons were released, as the balloons were carried away tears flowed freely and everyone looked to the skies and remembered, hands slipped into hands, arms surrounded bodies and heads rested on shoulders…..everyone just taking the time to remember and support as the balloons and messages drifted away

Féileacáin would like to thank all who helped on the day, from Susan Spillane for supplying the balloons, Youghal Supervalu for the refreshments and snacks for all who took part in the walk and to everyone who helped in anyway to make the day possible. The friends of Féileacáin are such an important part of the group and without them, organising days like this would be so much harder. Their work and support is very much appreciated by the group. Féileacáin would also like to thank Caroline Foley who sang so beautiful for everyone at the beach, her song was perfect for the occasion and helped to make it even more special.

Féileacáin work hard to touch as many bereaved parents as possible and to help support them on their journey by any means they can. They are happy to announce that they have been given permission by “Now I lay me down to sleep” to run a training/support course for the photographers who have been affiliated or who recently applied to become a part of this International charity. They now have a total of 20 photographers attending on this coming Tuesday 3rd May and they will soon be able to help and support parents and give them precious memories and photo’s of their beautiful babies. All of this is done free of charge.

Féileacáin is a nonprofit organisation that aims to provide support to those affected by the death of a baby during pregnancy or shortly after. The organisation was formed in 2009 and officially launched in October 2010 by a group of seven bereaved parents; Brain and Liz Roche , Mairie Cregan, Helen Hayes, Jacinta Murphy, Jessie Castle and Mary Lane. Since then they have done amazing work and have come so far in such a short time. Féileacáin has gone from strength to strength in their effort to offer hope and support to others.

The death of a baby is one of the most devastating experiences that anyone can go through. While you’re pregnant you have so much hope, you plan for your baby and for yourself as you approach your role as Mother or Father, you have so many hopes and dreams for the life growing inside you. The initial shock and resulting grief can be completely overwhelming for the parents and their close family. It is an emotional journey that will forever affect every aspect of their lives. Maybe someone you know has experienced stillbirth or neonatal death and you didn’t know what to say to them or how to support them. All to often the confusion or fear of making an inappropriate comment paralyse  people, they don’t know what to say so they avoid the grieving parents. Their silence can hurt, the grieving parents need their baby’s existence to have made a mark, they have buried their baby not their existence. These beautiful babies came into their parents lives for short brief moments but will be forever in their hearts. Féilecáin know how precious each and every life is and how every baby’s life should be celebrated and recognized. They also know how hard this experience is as they have all gone through the same heartbreaking experience. This is why Féilecáin volunteer their time to provide national ongoing support to those who need it through emails and phone calls. They also have started setting up local support groups, so far they have set up support meetings in Cork and Galway and are hoping to soon expand these to Tralee, Waterford and Kilkenny and hopefully at some stage they will become nationwide. Féileacáin are hoping to run training courses in Vienna Woods Hotel in July for anyone in Cork who would like to become a befriender volunteer and help facilitate a support group. Féileacáin are also working in setting up training for midwives and health professional, as to how parents are told and supported in hospitals.

Féileacáin also recognize that families who have lost babies in the past may not have had the help, support or opportunity to mourn and come to terms with the death of their precious child . Some families didn’t even know where their children were buried and some may not have been able to see or hold their child, as health professionals believed they were protecting the mothers and lessening her grief by doing so. Thankfully things have changed over the years, but that doesn’t mean we can’t continue to change and improve. Féileacáin have already helped Mothers and families who have lost their babies long ago to locate where their baby was buried if they were never given this information and to talk to someone who understands the trauma of their loss .

It is so important to many parents to have memories of the short time they have had with their babies. This is why Féileacáin have created the Remembering Memory box to give comfort to parents to look and hold reminders of their precious babies. These memory boxes have been recently released in maternity hospitals in Cork and Galway and will hopefully be launched very soon in many other maternity hospitals throughout Ireland . The boxes included beautiful hand knitted blankets, for parents to wrap or lay their baby in. It also includes a handmade card, a small box for a lock of the babies hair or their identification bracelet, and also two small teddies,  which some parents like to swap before the burial and give their child the teddy they kept close to them and they have the teddy that was kept close to their baby. In every Remembering Memory box is also a single use camera for parents to take photographs of their baby. These cameras can also be used by older siblings so they can take photos and be a part of making memories of their little brother or sister. There are also support leaflets to let parents know they are not alone and leaflets with suggestions on how to take photographs at this time of great sorrow and shock.

Féileacáin get support from many wonderful people, organisations and companies. Many knitting groups have donated time and effort into making beautiful blankets for the memory boxes. With approximately 11 babies per week die in Ireland  , a constant supply of knitted blankets is needed. Féileacáin can supply the wool and buttons for people who are willing to volunteer their time and skills to make the blankets and appreciate every single one. So if you are a member of a knitting group or you just knit on your own, you can get involved in knitting blankets. Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NIMLDTS)  is a wonderful organisation who work along side Féileacáin , who provide (at the parents request) volunteer professional photographer to come and take remembrance photography. Parents are provided with a sensitive portrait session and are provided with a free CD of sensitively retouched images , which serve as an important step in the families healing process by honoring their babies existence.  Féileacáin are providing the training and education to the NILMDTS photographers who volunteer in this amazing service to families facing the untimely death of their child.. With their next training day being held in Dublin on the 3rd May. In Cork at present Féileacáin has three photographers volunteering their time to this incredible service with 10 photographers nationwide , and are hoping over time they will have at least two photographers volunteering in every maternity hospital nationwide. Companies such as Precious Prints , Silverhaven Jewelery and Yewcrafts offer a range of beautiful items designed to provide parents with a choice of beautiful keepsakes. These keepsakes are important to preserve the child’s memory , from a range of jewelery and glass keepsakes with the babies name, birthday, hand or footprints engraved within the keepsake which will be treasured by the parents and family forever. These companies also donate 10% of the retail price back to Féileacáin once Féileacáin is mentioned when ordering.

Féileacáin is extremely grateful to all those who have already helped support their charity, from the people who knit blankets to those who hold fundraisers such as coffee mornings, handbag and make-up parties, dart tournaments to those running and walking in mini marathons. Thank you to the many people who donate money or sponser a Memory box and especially those who just spread the word and information about the charity. Stillbirth and neonatal death is sadly happening everyday and Féileacáin are doing fantastic work to ensure every parent who has to face such tragedy doesn’t feel alone. The memory boxes that are now in  CUMH will ensure that parents will have memories and mementos of their precious child forever. Hopefully soon these boxes will be in all maternity hospitals throughout Ireland. You can donate money to the charity via their facebook page or their website. A memory box costs just €20 you can sponsor a box through the shop on Féileacáin’s web site.
Please come along on May 1st and show your support and spread the word on the amazing work this charity is doing.

Feileacain (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Association of Ireland)
Feileacain was founded by a group of bereaved parents who came together to offer hope and support to other parents who unfortunately would need our help. Feileacain Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Association of Ireland (SANDAI), are a newly formed not for profit organisation (Charitable Status pending). We hope to provide assistance & support to anyone affected by the loss of a baby and also promote research. We are currently supplying some of the maternity hospitals with memory boxes for parents and these include such items as hand knitted blankets, disposal camera, finger printing kit, teddy bears and information. We will also be providing a Befriender Service, Phone support and Group meetings to those who may need it. We have links to Sands UK and the International Stillbirth Alliance. We can currently be found on Facebook at the following link http://www.facebook.com/pages/Feileacain-Stillbirth-and-Neonatal-Death-Association-of-Ireland/114951088552179 and our web-site www.feileacain.ie is under construction and is been officially launched on 29th October.

My name is Brian Roche and myself and my wife Liz are involved in the setting up off this charity. I’m from Youghal and Liz from Ballymacoda. Our story was recently featured both in The East Cork Journal and The Evening Echo. I was just wondering would it may be possible to place an interview on your web site as the more the news gets out there about the charity the more aware people will be and hence help more parents that unfortunetly would need our help. The loss of your baby is still such a taboo subject and many people try to ignore and not talk about it. Charities out there get so much press coverage for the living but we’re the other side of the coin and have lost ours.

As said our Official launch is on the 29th October in the Birch Suite at the Rochestown Park Hotel and is been launched by Minister of Forign Affairs, Mr Micheal Martin. You are more then welcome to attend.

My contact number is  024 98026 and at home everyday after 3pm should you require additional information.

Many Thanks
