Kevin Mangan Memorial raises funds for the Mercy Hospital Foundation
By Derek Kiely in Youghal
KEVIN MANGAN’S name will be forever remembered by his close friends and the support of his family as the annual Kevin Mangan memorial golf day was held at ‘Gold Coast Golf Resort’ last weekend, but this year was a little bit special as funds were raised for the Mercy Hospital Foundation.

Family and friends present a cheque of 2,023 euro to the Mercy Hospital Foundation from the recent Kevin Mangan Memorial Golf Classic.- Pictured at the cheque presentation at the Mangan family home on Thursday 21st July 2011 are: Anthony Donoghue, Claire Crowley, Helen landers, Phil Mangan, Teresa McCarthy, Rosemary O'Leary - Fundraiser executive with the Mercy Hospital Foundation, Peg Crowley and Paddy Mangan. Kevin sadly passed away a few years ago when he died after he suffered from Sleep Apnea and Kevin’s family and friends started a memorial day in 2008, but this time the family and the friends of the fondly remembered Youghal man wanted to do something more and with the dedication of one of his greatest friends Anthony O’Donoghue started to organise fund raising, sponsored prizes and sponsor cards to help raise funds towards a machine at the Mercy Hospital that can help with this condition.
Over 40 people turned up and played in the event and the organiser of the event Anthony O’Donoghue said “We wanted his (Kevin) memorial day to be a charity event from here on in, it certainly has grown over the last three years and I hope it gets even bigger and more people get involved. People in around Youghal have been very supportive and I want to thank them for their help and sponsorship, in particular this year to Mr Noel Mackey, he was brilliant”.
The red jacket for the winner was presented to the evergreen Paddy Yellop, who at 75 years young beat the field to the number one spot.
Mrs Phil Mangan the mother of the late Kevin Mangan said at the presentation “People have been great and I want to thank everyone who donated or helped in any way, Kevin Will never be forgotten with his great friends and if we can help to save just one life that would be brilliant”.
The event organiser is already getting ready for 2012 and going by the enthusiasm shown by the group to raise funds for the Mercy Hospital Foundation, this annual event is set to grow much bigger.
The presentation of prizes was held at Noel Mackey’s Central Star last Saturday evening and the top five winners were:
1st Paddy Yellop
2nd Adrian Yellop
3rd Michael O’Donoghue
4th John Leary
5th Anthony Kelly

Over 300 hundred people took part in the annual Chernobyl Childrens Trust cliff Walk which took place yesterday (Sunday March 20th 2011). The walk began at 12 noon in Ballycottton and the weather conditions were fantastic for this popular fundraiser. Free buses were available from Ballinrostig at 11am to bring walkers to Ballycotton to begin the cliff walk back to Ballinrostig.
This is a most beautiful walk along the East Cork coastline, there are a number of points along the way where you could leave the walk if need be, which made it suitable for all abilities. Walker were advised to wear good study walking shoes, bring light rain gear and a snack and drink for along the way.The walkers that did the full distance were aware that some points of the cliff walk were a bit tricky.
Free refreshments and music awaited all sponsored walkers at ” Poc ar Buile” in Ballinrostig after the walk

Founded in 1985, Headway works to bring about a positive change to the lives of those with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), by providing vocational, community, rehabilitative and psychological support services. Given that road traffic accidents account for more that half of all brain injuries reported in Ireland, Cork Lions Club feel that a Motor Cycle Run is the perfect way to support Headway and promote safe road use at the same time.

* Headway offer services and support to people affected by acquired brain injury (ABI). In many cases people with brain injury have no obvious physical disability but the effects can be profound and unique to the individual. Brain injury can happen to anyone at any time in life and can be the result of a road traffic accident, or a blow to the head, stroke, haemorrhage, infection or tumour.
* It is estimated that up to 30,000 people are living with the effects of a brain injury in Ireland. Road Traffic accidents are the biggest cause of injury to Headway’s service users. A recent study in Beaumont Hospital found that , of patients with serious head injuries, 50% were not wearing seat belts in there vehicles, and 50% of cyclists and 33% of motor cyclists were not wearing helmets.
* The impact is often life-long, affecting both the person with the injury and their family members in a variety of ways. Due to the many and varied effects of acquired brain injury, people often have difficulty living independently, working or returning to education, participating in social and leisure activities and maintaining family roles or personal relationships.
* Headway has been supporting those affected by acquired brain injury since 1985. It provides a range of community-based services in Limerick, Cork, Kerry and Dublin along with outreach services in the South-Eastern region. Services include rehabilitation training, day activity, psychological therapy and family support, counselling, outreach, family education workshops, supported employment, community access and a national helpline on 1890 200 278
The annual Friends of St Raphael’s Open Day commences each year at 2pm. This year, the event was planned for Sunday June 27th and when the East Cork Journal arrived at 2.10pm it was to find the grounds of the hospital packed with people, all in great mood, buying, chatting, eating, dancing on the grass and generally having a great time. The colourful plants were almost all sold, the book stall was doing great business, the burger vans were surrounded, the candy floss was swaying in the warm breeze and the mugs of coffee were being downed at a very fast rate.
Denise FitzGerald | Photo: Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com
But that was only part of what The Friends Open Day is all about. The Friends of St Raphael’s Fundraising Committee comprises John Roche, Chairman, Frances O’Neill Ahern, Secretary/Treasurer and a very active committee who commenced making their arrangements and organisation back in February, working very hard to make sure that everything is just right for the day. The weather was beautiful, the live music was played brilliantly, neighbours met for chats and the residents of the hospital had a fantastic time.
An event such as this needs help from many people, and the Friends of St Raphael’s told the East Cork Journal that they are particularly grateful to their main sponsors, john McCarthy Motors, Fermoy and Ann Marie from Walsh’s Pharmacy, Youghal. Also, huge thanks to the people of the town and surrounding areas who not only come along on the day to support, but also those who donate items, books, gifts etc., Also, for the wonderful home cooked pastries, cakes, scones, biscuits brought along which were very quickly snapped up.
The proceeds of the Open Day will go towards updating the bus which is used on a daily basis for the benefit of the clients. Bus trips to the beach, the Opera House, and various other outings mean a lot, and as the bus has eight seats which are specifically designed for disabled persons, comfort is included along with the health and safety of the passengers.
Frances O’Neill Ahern told the East Cork Journal that many of the staff gave up their Sunday to help out on the day and the Committee are very grateful to them. Of course, one cannot forget the marvellous coverage supplied by CRY, and Barty Murphy who organised all the live stage entertainment for the day.
The main winners of the Raffle were: 1st (€500) Katherine Ansbro Blackwater Heights; 2nd (€300) Tadhg Lyons, Crookstown, Cork; 3rd (€100) Finbarr Lyons Minane Bridge; 4th (€100) Susan Yellop, College Road Ardmore.
The Open Day, without doubt, was a huge success but, with so much activity going on, and with the huge crowds who came along to support our own St Raphael’s, there really wasn’t much time to stop and smell the roses!

The night was all about the two charities Marymount Hospice & Bru Columbanus. They provided exceptional care and support to my father Gus Horgan on his recent battle with cancer. Anyone who has had the misfortune of having a family member or friend suffer from cancer would have seen first hand the professionalism and service they provide. We are delighted to give a little back through the generous support of the people who were attended on the night and to those who could not make it. A big thank you to everyone!!!
