Frida Gallery is named in honour of Frida Kahlo, an iconic early to mid-19th century Mexican artist renowned particularly for her surrealist self-portraits, depicting “pain and passion”, through intense, vibrant colours. Her work is highly celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. “She was and remains a hugely inspiring figure.

YOUGHAL has acquired a new art centre with the opening of Frida Gallery at 38 South Main Street last Wednesday (November 30th). Youghal Mayor Eoin Coyne cut the tape on the new business, which is owned by Offaly-born Lora Murphy, now in her fourth year of residency in the town.

Barbara Murray pictured at the official opening of 'Gallery Frida', South Main street, Youghal. The new art gallery opened its doors for the first time on Wednesday, 30th of November 2011.
The three-storey building, owned by Lora, formerly housed a tattoo parlour on its first two floors with a painting studio in the upper reaches. The two lower floors will now accommodate exhibition spaces, where artists from throughout Ireland are expected to display their work. “I hope in the long term to provide a focal point where young and emerging artists can be encouraged and can display their work,” says Lora.
A graduate from UCC, free-spiriting Lora arrived in Youghal having resided for over 20 years in Montana and Alaska. She was poised to settle in Abbeyside, Dungarvan –indeed had paid a deposit on a house- when a day trip to Youghal turned her head. “I couldn’t believe how beautiful the town was and immediately opted to live here instead!,” she recalls. She purchased a home in the strand the work base in South Main Street.

Inspiring
Frida Gallery is named in honour of Frida Kahlo, an iconic early to mid-19th century Mexican artist renowned particularly for her surrealist self-portraits, depicting “pain and passion”, through intense, vibrant colours. Her work is highly celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. “She was and remains a hugely inspiring figure,” says the inspiring Lora, simply.
Last week two new exhibitions were launched at ‘the Frida.’ On Floor 2, Re-enchantment currently features abstract paintings by Greystones painter Barbara O’Meara. The inaugural ground floor exhibition carries the wishful title of Summer in December’ a theme carried by over 20 established artists, local and national, in ‘Plein Air’ mode as the easel world terms it -that is to say, the paintings are outdoor creations. They traverse oils to acrylic to watercolours and all points in between, with representations varying from Killarney’s luscious landscapes to a Kerry rave scene by way of a County Cork rail station!
Orphanage support
The gallery will donate 25% of its income to an orphanage project in Uganda called Toro Babies Home. Championed by Lora’s partner Lars Moeslund and run by Norwegian volunteers, the orphanage houses over 50 children, whose parents have died or are dying of AIDS. “It provides a ‘substitute mother and family’ and enables them to have some normality through attending school etc,” says Lars. “The plan is to make the orphanage as self-sufficient with its own food production over the coming years.” The gallery will continue to support the orphanage project into the future.
Summer in December and Re-enchantment run until Christmas Eve from noon to 6 pm. Enquiries: 085-8866424; e-mail: mornag@usa.net; fb: look up Gallery Frida

A NEW ART GALLERY will open its doors for the first time on Wednesday, 30th of November. The official opening of Gallery Frida will be performed by the Mayor of Youghal, Eoin Coyne. The first exhibition will support an Orphanage Project in Uganda (Toro Babies Home) run by Norwegian volunteers. The gallery is run by Danish man Lars Moeslund and artist Lora Murphy and the public are welcome to the opening. The gallery has its name from the mexican painter Frida Kahlo, who by her life has inspired Lora. Gallery Frida is situated at 38 South Main Street, Youghal.
The gallery will open with an exhibition called “Summer in December”, Plein Air, to bring in light and warmth in this dark and cold season. There will be represented around 20 established painters from all over Ireland. The plein Air part of the exhibition will be at the ground level and at the first floor Lora will exhibit some of her own paintings together with another female painter Barbara O’Meara from Greystones.
The exhibition will be opened on the 30th of November from 5-8 pm and the Mayor of Youghal, Eoin Coyne, will officially open the exhibition at 5.30 pm.
Part of the commission from selling the paintings will be used to support an Orphanage Project in Uganda (Toro Babies Home)run by Norwegian volunteers.
Dan Aage Mortensen from Norway is part of the volunteer group that raises money for the project in Norway. All money for this project is given by donors (private persons and companies).
This exhibition will become part of the project by donating 25% of the commission directly to the project in Uganda.
Gallery Frida will continue to donate money to the project in Uganda after this exhibition is over.
The Orphanage houses 50-60 children, who have no parents or their parents are dying of AIDS. The children live at the Orphanage with a “substitute mother” and have a life as normal as possible going to school and having a family. Almost all money from donation goes directly to the Orphanage. The plan is to make the Orphanage self sufficient with its own food (vegetables, milk, egg and honey) in the years to come. That will cost a good deal of money and therefore the money from this exhibition will be welcomed very much.
The exhibition will run from 30.th of November to 24th of December 2011 (12-6 pm every day).

The minute you hear the name Bob Rock, you automatically think of Weddings, Events and Youghal. His name and work is synonymous with photography. Now after 10 years since he retired from his well know photographic studio at 126 North Main St.(now Eamonn O’Brien’s Gallery 126) he has decided to launch his own website http://bobrock.zenfolio.com to showcase his wonderful work. The website has several different galleries, Wildlife, On the shore, Lakes, Fells & Islands and even one gallery dedicated to Youghal Landscapes.

Bob says on the website showcasing his diverse work “Photography has been a large part of most of my life and provided me with a living for thirty years. Now retired, digital is my new thing,it provides me with a degree of control never obtainable with film. My images are intended to be easy on the eye. My criteria when assessing an image, is simply, would I like it on my wall?”
Bob has the eye of the professional photographer and with all the ‘buttons and things’ on the modern digital camera has his own complete digital darkroom! Retirement has given Bob Rock more time to pursue and showcase his particular love of landscape and nature photography. Side by side with his art Bob enjoys spending quality time with his wife Teresa, daughters and grandchildren.
The retired photographer had a very successful exhibition of his work a few years ago at the Methodist Church Hall as a fundraiser for the South Abbey National School, Youghal, where all his prints sold.
If you are interested in one of his limited edition why not take a look at the fabulous images on the website where they would make wonderful gift. The prints come without a frame so you can chose your own colours to suit your own needs but Bob highly recommends the framemaking service at the St. Raphael Centre, Youghal. The prints come in a range of different sizes on high quality photographic paper and are very reasonably priced.
All images on screen are low resolution. If you would like to purchase a full resolution archival quality print up tp 19″ X 13″ I will be happy to oblige, just send an email or phone your requirements.
Best regards, Bob Rock.

The credibility of Youghal’s main street as a commercial centre has been further reinforced with the opening of new photography and art gallery in a prime location. Consumers and fellow retailers alike on the beleaguered thoroughfare will welcome the advent of McGoldrick’s Art & Photography at 89 North Main Street. The site, adjacent to the Clock Gate, had been idle for mere weeks following the closure of the previous fashion accessories outlet.
Proprietor Eileen McGoldrick and her husband Will Nick have lived in Youghal for about eight years and reside in Strand Street. The Belfast-born couple have previously lived in Oxford and over past decades have developed an impressive reputation in the arts world, hosting acclaimed exhibitions in Oxford and London as well as Cork and Dungarvan on this side of the pond.
With a target market of locals and tourists, the location obviously is of prime relevance. However the “quality of natural light”, that flows through the front and side windows was a major factor in choosing location. Alongside selected manufactured illumination, the combination brings a focus of perfection to the works on display.
Variety
The inaugural exhibition stretches across photography, oils and acrylic, though the display will alternate monthly. Within the compact space, the visitor can browse, for example, on the astounding depictions of Helvic Head cliff faces and beach rocks, their shapes and pastel hues rendered unique and enchanting through the magic of Will’s photography. “One visitor said she admired ‘the aerial view of the Caribbean island,” smiles Will. “In fact it was a view of a rock from Ballycotton!”
Eileen’s inventive cross-media pieces offer the colourful surrealism begat from subjecting acrylic, cloth netting and scanning technology to an unfettered imagination. The results reflect ‘dream sequences’ but are subject to individual interpretation.
Elsewhere a photo of derelict fishing boat’s revealed layers of colours bear witness to its lives, competing for attention with the acrylic depiction of a woman in a black dress hanging white washing against a background of industrial rust. A rainbow finds the Ferry Point, Muckross Abbey stands sultry, Moby Dick’s pink perkiness is viewed from the Pier Head past the blue hue of a boat.
Other creativities are manifested book form, themed to unravel by the enamoured page. From envelope-sized originals of €8 cost to 30 inch square masterpieces of seventy times that value, the walls and shelves do their new home proud.
If the works are beautiful, they are complimented by their creators’ belief. “I have great confidence in selling art, if art can be sold, on Youghal’s main street,” says Eileen. Yet she equally yearns to create an oasis perhaps “where visitors can browse, with no pressure to buy” and where they can view art for art’s sake –evocatively reminding them of what derives from their own lives.
Classes
McGoldrick Art & Photography will also host art lessons weekly, on Mondays. Two sessions, managed by Eileen, will cater separately for children and adults. Classes are open to all levels from total novices to budding Van Gogh’s! “It will be tailored totally towards the nurturing and developing the abilities of each individual,” says Eileen.

A big thank you to all those that came along to the opening of the McGoldrick Art & Photography Gallery on Friday (11th March), and showed their support. With a good steady stream of people throughout the day, it was good to take bookings for portraits, Art Classes (Adults & Children), and commissions; just the sort of opening day I had hoped for. I would also like to thank all those that sent cards wishing me every success, and especially to Susan & Barry at “Absolute Flowers” for their kindness and generosity. Also to the good people at ‘www.Youghalonline’, ‘Youghal News’, CRY, Mick Hussey, Christy Parker, and Ger Flanagan.
