The Munster Matchplay Championships took place last weekend here in Youghal and was a fantastic weekend had by all and a great standard of pitch and putt was shown all through the competition. Weather conditions were tough but players battled through with superb play over the two days. It is the first time in the clubs history that we have held such a prestigious event and a great way also to celebrate the clubs 25th anniversary this year after the clubs foundation in 1986. We thank all who helped out in anyway in the preparation for this championship.

The course was also in top condition and credit must be given to all who made the course look its best over the last few months. There were 32 players competing over the weekend with 16 players in the senior grade, 8 in the intermediate section and also 8 in the junior section. Congratulations to all who played and especially Paudie O’ Sullivan who played very well and made the quarter finals of the championship in the senior grade, who lost out to the eventual winner of the event, John Walsh, who is currently Ireland’s number one ranked player in the game from Collins in Cork. John’s opponent in the final was Ireland’s number two Ray Murphy also from Cork. The two players put on a great performance and a superb final although John came out on top winning the match 8&7.

In the intermediate grade young gun Stephen Sheehan carried the hopes of the host club and showed how pitch and putt is played with a fantastic display both Saturday and Sunday and went home as Munster Champion in his respective grade winning his final against Glen O’ Donovan of Collins 6&5. Congratulations to Declan O’Connell from Tralee on winning the Junior title by defeating an impressive Kevin Flynn from Limerick in the final 3&2.
There were raving reviews all through the weekend of the course and the brilliant condition it was in and we are delighted that the Championship went so well and hopefully in the near future we can go a step further and host a national event here in Youghal.

We would also like to acknowledge the great privilege it is for Youghal Golf Club to have members from our Club selected for the U18 Munster Interprovincial Girls team. This was held in Woodenbridge on 17th April.  Edel and Julie did us proud again on this occasion, even though Ulster won, Munster came a very close second. Read more
