Noel O’ Driscoll Memorial 2011
2 weeks ago saw the Noel O’ Driscoll Memorial prize for 2011 come to an end. Over the four days of play there was some great shooting out on the course where conditions were tough and the weather wasn’t on side for the majority of the tournament. We thank all who supported this prestigious competition and especially to those who have the course in such top condition day in day out. The overall winner of the prize was David Kenefick who produced some fine play and was a very worthy winner of the perpetual trophy. Although the weather wasn’t kind to us, over 100 cards were played in total.

Chairperson’s Prize 2011
The Chairperson’s prize sponsored by our chairman Martin Keohane was played for last weekend, Over the four days, weather conditions were again tough with rain around during most of the sessions. Although weather was poor, we were delighted with the turnout where 150 cards were played. We thank all who supported the competition. This was the last major of the year and scoring was close but it was James Howes who finished off his great season by adding the Chairperson’s Prize to the other wins this year.
Special mention to Paudie O’ Sullivan who had two ‘holes in one’ on Sunday afternoon in a row in the same round on hole 12 and 13 respectively. It is very rare to see this happen in the game and its a great achievement.

Membership in the Club is also on the increase, which is another positive going forward. We thank all who supported our captain Adrian Landers over the four days of competition and as always the course was in top order and no complaints were had. The weather was also on side for the players which made it more enjoyable in which to partake. It was very competitive over the few days where it was wide open up until the final card was handed in on Sunday afternoon.
There was a wonderful array of prizes, but the overall winner who played very steady over the course of the tournament with a supurb score was James Howes who won by 2 shots from David Poynton in what was a very competitive afternoon of pitch and putt.
A special congratulations must go to Martin Keohane, the winner of the ‘hole in one’ prize. Martin had in fact two aces in one round on Sunday afternoon. Club captain Adrian Landers said ” I am delighted to see such a turnout with over 200 cards played and we hope the Club can go from strength to strength in the future”.

Youghal’s Anthony O’Loughlin from Claycastle Pitch & Putt is National Champion
On the weekend of 23rd/24th of July last, the National Strokeplay Championships took place at the Douglas pitch and putt course in Cork. As always for any of the major competitions, the greens and the course were in top condition.

The Junior and Intermediate finals take place on the Saturday while the Senior players take to the course on the Sunday. The qualifying took place for this tournament back in June and is the one that most players look forward to and value highly. Claycastle had three players qualify for the finals, Anthony O’Loughlin, Paudie O’Sullivan, and Gary O’Sullivan. The qualifying took place at the Rocklodge course in Cork where all three players cruised through to the finals with great scores.
Paudie O’Sullivan was the first Claycastle player out on the day and finished with a steady score of 7 under par(101) after 36 holes. Gary O’Sullivan took to the course shortly after and played consistently over the two rounds and finished with a score of 8 under par(100), and merely missed out on the cut by one shot.
Club Secretary Anthony O’Loughlin was the final Claycastle player out on the course; Anthony played consistently and carded 95 for his 36 holes. Anthony safely made it through to the play-off where the top 20 players played in the final round.
At this stage there were few who would have bet against John Crangle from Loughlinstown in Dublin who led going into the final 18 by 3 shots on -16, but there were three players who sat on -13 and who were all in with a chance of the title.
Anthony O’Loughlin paired with Ian Dillon(St. Bridget’s) for the final 18 who had a fantastic start in the play-off sinking birdies on the first three holes to give him a great chance of lifting the title and brought himself closer to the score of John Crangle(Loughlinstown).
Anthony carried on strongly and had the round of the day with a 42 (12 under par) (also equaling the course record of the Douglas course). This was enough for Anthony as he went on to win the National Strokeplay Championships by a margin of three shots.
This win has also cemented Anthony a place on the Cork team alongside club teammate Paudie O’Sullivan who has played supurbly this season on the pitch and putt circuit. Both players will wear the red jersey of Cork in the Munster Inter-County Championships which take place in Bruff County Limerick on the 7th August 2011.
The National Inter-County Championships takes place this year in Dublin at Portmarnock on the 11th September 2011. We wish Anthony and Paudie the very best of luck in the coming weeks representing their county.
This is the first time that a player from Claycastle has won a National title and is a very special time for the club, especially as they celebrate their 25th Anniversary this year.
The club is going from strength to strength and we hope we can have another National champion in the club in the near future.
ERAS ECO, the Cork based waste treatment and recycling plant, has announced plans for a €10 million investment in new environmentally friendly technology at its site at Foxhole, Youghal. 10 new full-time jobs will be created once the new facilities are commissioned in addition to approximately 20 jobs during the construction and installation phase.
The key element will be a new green and renewable system for the safe and complete destruction of aqueous organic waste that has been developed by Cork based environmental company, Super Critical Fluids International (SCFI). This innovative system, known as AquaCritox®, has been extensively developed and tested in Ireland and Sweden over the past five years.
The system employs super critical water oxidation technology to provide 100% destruction of organic wet waste converting it into clean water. AquaCritox® does not generate any odours or harmful emissions or residues. This innovative process is carried out in water and generates steam that can be used to make renewable electricity or used elsewhere on the site. The adoption of the AquaCritox® technology will allow Eras Eco to convert the waste streams safely and efficiently into renewable energy thus displacing imported energy.
The company additionally plans to further develop its green energy credentials with the construction of an above ground anaerobic digestion facility on the site to allow for enhanced treatment of bio-solids. The resultant production of methane gas will be used to produce electricity for use on site through a combined heat and power generator.
The upgraded facilities will utilise existing buildings and plant on the site. There will be no increase in the amount of waste permitted under existing permissions and no new entrance points to the site required.
Parsons Engineering’s Cork office will perform the design and manage the construction of the AquaCritox® plant which will be built in Cork by Rockwell Automation (formerly Proscon).
To facilitate the development, Eras Eco has applied for planning permission to allow for the upgrading of the existing Waste Recovery Facility to an Integrated Waste Management Facility.
Separately a review of the current Waste License will be applied for from the Environmental Protection Agency.
The planning application may be inspected or purchased at the offices of Cork County Council, County Hall, Carrigrohane Road, Cork during public opening hours, 9am – 4pm, Mondays to Fridays. Any submissions or observations may be made in writing over the five week period from the date of the planning application (23 December 2010).

Juvenile Matchplay 2010
The 2010 Juvenile Matchplay came to an end recently with the most experienced juvenile David Poynton becoming the victor. Throughout the whole competition there were many exciting matches. The match between Una Brosnan and Adam Bulman went to sudden death with a dramatic ending where Una lipped out giving Adam the win and a place in the next round of the competition.
Also the game between brothers David O Brien and Ian O Brien went to four holes of sudden death and was a great battle to watch. Ian eventually came out on top after the fourth play off hole.
Congratulations all the players who took part in the matchplay and well done to David Poynton once again, not forgetting his opponent in the final Erin. Well Done!.
Well done to Paudie O’ Sullivan who finished runner-up at the Larkspur park scratch cup last weekend. A three shot swing and a visit to the water on th very last hole cost Paudie a well deserved victory.

It’s Official! Youghal United are Guinness World Record Holders – Guinness recognises club’s new world record for “longest five-a-side soccer marathon” Photo: www.youghalonline.com
After thirty-three and a half hours of non-stop, five-a-side soccer, the hardest part of Youghal United’s quest to break the world record for the longest five-a-side soccer match may have been the eleven weeks they’ve had to wait to find out if their record-breaking attempt would be officially recognized by Guinness World Records.
Last week event organizer Jock Gallogley got the following good word from Guinness: “The longest five-a-side football marathon is 33 hr 30 min by members of Youghal United AFC (Ireland) at Ardrath Park, Youghal, Ireland from 5-7 June 2010.” A certificate and other official documentation are now on their way to the club.
Many will remember the excitement and drama at Ardrath Park this past June bank holiday weekend, when sixteen stout and hardy souls, a few well past their physical prime (we won’t name names, but they know who they are), bravely battled hunger, fatigue and the elements to beat the world record formerly held by Club Next, a youth organisation in Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo.
When the dust finally settled at Ardrath Park that balmy Sunday evening, Youghal United’s record breaking attempt was just beginning. Over the next few weeks, the club started work on completing the strict record verification procedures required by Guinness, which were nearly as big a challenge as breaking the record itself. A package of video highlights, photos, witness reports, and a logbook of player substitutions and rest breaks were turned over to Guinness for scrutiny. Just one mistake in the club’s presentation could cost them the record.
Thankfully, the record is now official, and the following sixteen players can now truly call themselves Guinness World Record holders:
Martin Coen, Christophe Colin, Kevin Gallogley, Leon Geary, Peter Geary, Barry Goggin, Pierce Hennessy, Stuart Hickey, Anthony Kelly, David Kenneally, Mike Lyons, Patrick Morrissey, David O’Keefe, Gavin O’Leary, Aidan Ryan, and Diarmuid Schuel
While the players deserve much praise for their incredible achievement, the event organizers and many supporters are also worthy of recognition.
Emmett Perry, Jock Gallogley, Ken Dempsey, Jamie Lawton, Sally O’Sullivan, Finbarr Walsh, Sammy Revins, Brian Wade, T Kennedy, and Dick Sheehan of Youghal United all had a part to play, as did many other volunteers from the club and the town. The support of physiotherapist Jimmy Healy and his staff, the tireless work of videographer Willie O’Mahony, and backing from main sponsors T&M Fitzgerald Homes, Youghal Credit Union, Bertie’s Bar and Farrell’s Summerfield Bar were also greatly appreciated.
Mark your calendars for next year’s June Bank Holiday weekend, as Youghal United now try to figure out how to top their Guinness World Record breaking success.
