In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. These were the final words spoken before Paul Mulcahy was baptised by immersion in the river Blackwater at the Mall beach in Youghal yesterday afternoon-10th April 2011.

Paul Mulcahy from Ardmore, Co.Waterford, receiving the "Believers' Baptism" in the River Blackwater at the Mall Beach, Youghal, with Seth Lewis and Pastor Mervyn Scott from the Youghal Baptist Church. - Pic: Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com
Paul (who lives in Ardmore) was following in the footsteps of his own father Philip, who himself was
baptised back in September. This was the second time the local Baptist church have had a baptismal service in Youghal. Mervyn Scott simply outlined that their understanding from the New Testament is that people believed in Jesus Christ first, then got baptised and belonged to the church!
Earlier at a short service held in the beautiful glass foyer of the Mall Arts Centre, Paul had spoken of how he had trusted in Jesus Christ as his Saviour back in October and wanted to demonstrate that inward change by being baptised in the way that Jesus had commanded. The tide was a little far out, but the water was not as cold as in September and everyone returned to the Mall for refreshments.

Claycastle Pitch and Putt 25th Anniversary flag raising ceremony
It was a red letter day for Claycastle Pitch and Putt earlier this week when a flag was hoisted marking the 25th anniversary of the Club.
Founded in 1986 the club has grown over the years to become one of the most active clubs in Youghal, it currently has over 80 members. Originally based in the grounds of the Hilltop Hotel, the then town council granted land to the club in 1984 and the construction of the 18 hole course got underway. Two years later in 1986 the club was officially open, spearheaded by the late Noel O Driscoll; other founding members included Daisy Swayne and Tom McCarthy.

Mrs Noel O’Driscoll wife of the late Noel O’Criscoll founder member of club assisted by Mr. Mossie Swayne husband of the late Daisy Swayne founder raising the flag.
Raising the 25th anniversary flag this week were Mossie Swayne, the husband of Daisy, and Noel O Driscoll’s wife Margaret. Other members who have been a driving force in the club over the last quarter of a century are Michael Landers and the current Lady Captain Phil Mangan. Also present at the ceremony was the current president Thomas Bulman, club secretary Anthony O’Loughlin said “the club has been successful due in no small part to the efforts of many over 25 years and it has been a very active club in the community and has been very popular with the elderly in the town. It’s a great pastime for the elderly and while it’s a gentle sport there’s also a great competitive edge to it and it’s great to be going strong after 25 years” Events during the year to mark the 25th anniversary include the Mens’ Munster Matchplay Championship on May 28th and 29th.

THE OPENING CEREMONY of the 2011 European Snooker Championships takes place at the Dolmen Hotel in Malta this evening where from tomorrow morning the 30th of March until April the 7th over 25 Nations will battle it out in the various European Snooker Championship competitions.
There are four categories here in Malta this week and the Republic of Ireland have serious chances of success in three different events, including the European Senior Team Championship, the European Masters Championships and the all new under 21 European Individual Snooker Championships, which has the dream ticket for the winner who will get a place on the Pro –Tour. There is also a Ladies European Championships, but the Republic of Ireland will not be involved in this event.
Republic of Ireland U21 Team Manager, Don O’Donoghue said “We have as good a chance as any other European Nation here in Malta, we have a team of top class players with us out here and if you get the bit of luck you always need and take your chances when they come along, then we have every chance”.

MARCH 30th 11.45pm
WE have had our first Century of the European Snooker Championships where the host Nation’s favourite son ‘The Tornado’ Tony Drago hit in a 107 in his opening match for the Malta 1 side who played Malta 4 in the opening match of the 2011 European Snooker Championships.
Tony said “I think that this tournament is fantastic and you must take your hat off to the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association to hold the event for the second time in 12 months. Today was a difficult one for me playing against my very good friends, but that is what these tournaments are all about. When you think of the great players like Ronnie O’Sullivan or John Higgins, they all started off as amateurs and if it wasn’t for these tournaments the great players would never have made it to the professional standings, so you should never forget your roots”.
The facilities both on and off the tables at the Dolmen Hotel have come in for praise from everyone so far here at the European Snooker Championships and Tony echoed those sentiments “I played here many years ago and I knew that the facilities and the tables would be excellent once again and I think this is a good event for Malta in every way, I hope people support it strongly”.

CRY 104fm’s radio jock Shane Supple talks to Warren Tivy, who during the year undertook a charity climb to one of the world’s best known mountains, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa which is 12,000 meters above sea level.
Warren Tivy, musician, producer, sound engineer and owner of Claycastle Studios in Youghal decided to do some work for charity and he was doing work for different bands and acts who were all raising funds for the Charity Africa Direct so it did this seemed like a good idea at the time. He had to raise €6,000 to go to Nairobi where he spent two days visiting the projects that the funds were being used for. Warren said he had never seen anything like it; Nairobi is like any other city it’s busy and bustling But driving out to the slums where over 2 million people live in abject poverty he got a sense of what this was all for. What prompted him to do this I asked and he said one of the things he found interesting about this charity was that every penny and cent raised was handed over to the charity who were working in the slums providing care health basic needs to the people living in these slums.
After spending two days there they headed across the Serengeti by bus it took over a day to travel to Mushy on the other side of Kenya to base camp for the climbing. Warren had already spent the year working out getting fit and working in the gym as well as doing lots of running. He met with many other climbers who were treating it a little more serious then Warren and his fellow climbers from Ireland. It was a rough trek where you worked your way up through the rain forest first before hitting the volcanic rock of the mountain. It took seven days to climb and each night you would sleep over at that point you reached that day, It was tough going as the higher you climbed the altitude started taking its toll, for the last two days Warren says he felt sick constantly headaches and tired, sick feeling in your stomach. It was awkward as the higher they climbed the chances of illness increased the problem with that was because of the altitude there were no helicopters able to fly at that altitude due to lack of air so it was going to be tough on anyone who had to turn back down the mountain.
On the sixth day they arrived at Kabuki Huts where they spent several hours just getting used to the altitude and at 1am they set off to reach the peak in order to be there for dawn. It took six hours and it was only a small distance but with ice and lack of oxygen it was tough going. At around 7am they reached the summit and managed to see the dawn break. On the way to the summit they met many other climbers who had to turn back because of illness but the Irish group continued on.
I asked Warren what went through his head when he was standing on the summit. He said it was an emotional time the first thought that went through his head was oh my god I now have to climb down this mountain again. But it was beautiful standing there looking around at the world below you. As time was short they only got to spend a few minutes at the summit when they had to make there way back down.
The hardest part of it was the sweat that had built up under his protective clothing had turned to ice and as he descended it started to melt, within a short time he was soaked through and had to continue climbing down. By the time he got back down the mountain he was down to wearing a t shirt because of the morning sun and the heat it was difficult climbing down and they had to stop several times on the way down to acclimatise and get used to the altitude. I asked him would he do it again and he replied that he would do it all again, he is raising money all the time for the charity Africa Direct.
It’s good to see a local musician taking on such a large task all to raise funds for charity. Currently Warren and the crew at Claycastle are working on different projects but one that sticks out is the Marine session Live CD vol 2. After the success of the first CD they decided that so many musicians responded that they had enough material to start a second album so that’s what they are working at now, if you see Warren or any of the bands he works with playing in an area near you go along and support them.
