The Coach house Restaurant and Bar at North Main St. in Youghal are known for their annual fundraising events for various worthy charities, and 2010 was no different. Last Friday night ( April 16th 2010) Niamh Daly, Manageress of the Coach House Restaurant, and her staff got together to organise a night of de-fuzzing, de-hairing, lathering, and badger brushing, all in the very good cause of raising funds for the Youghal branch of the Irish Red Cross. Most men would agree that there is something therapeutic about a hot shave with a mug of sudsy water. The perfect shave, they say, requires a man to continually look into the mirror, closely examining himself for rough patches and missed spots, and has a four step process – prepare, lather up, shave, moisturise. Well, forget about all of that!

Jackie Cronin of Allure Beauty Salon in Youghal ‘waxed’ eloquent on the night, ensuring that all participants enjoyed the transition from fuzzy curls to smooth, pink limbs with the minimum of fuzz! Becky Cullen, the MC, kept the onlookers entertained with her running commentary on the ten or more volunteers who came within a “hair’s breadth” of losing it all. Peter Roche from Youghal was the effervescent DJ, who was foaming at the mouth before the night ended.

It was a great night of fun and craic, well supported by the locals. Jane Arnott of the Irish Red Cross was present, together with some of her colleagues who were delighted to avail of the free shave and wax. Backs, heads, arms and various other parts of the anatomy came under the busy hands of Niamh, who showed no sympathy at all for the few reluctant hairs which clung tenaciously to the delicate skins of John Godfrey, John Ryan, Sean Paul Graham, David McCarthy, Billy Dean Ruxton, Gerard Horgan and others.

However, all was considered very worthwhile when an amazing amount of €1,100 was raised on the night for the Youghal Branch of the Irish Red Cross, and all volunteers agreed that their new appearance turned them into handsome ‘smooth operators’.

Youghal Credit Union was part of a presentation to St. Vincent de Paul and the Irish Red Cross with a cheque for (€130,000) received from 94 credit unions nationwide to aid families who find themselves in difficult circumstances as a result of the adverse weather conditions witnessed over the past number of weeks. Youghal credit union donated €2,500 to this fund.
Commenting on the announcement of the fund Mr. John Colbert , Chairman of Youghal Credit Union Limited said “These are tremendously difficult times for many people in Ireland today.
As credit unions are at the heart of communities, we are witnessing firsthand how the weather conditions experienced in the past week will have real and lasting effects for the families and the communities affected by the flood damage.
In the future, credit unions will continue to contribute to community initiatives to help repair the damage and rebuild communities. But we all need to strive to help people who find themselves in dire straits this Christmas and that is why we have decided to establish this fund and we are delighted with the response to date. In addition to these contributions, many credit unions have established their own funds so members may make further contributions and we will continue take theses in the weeks ahead.
We are delighted that St. Vincent de Paul and the Irish Red Cross will provide assistance with distributing the funds to those in need prior to Christmas. Credit Unions are about investing in people and their communities.
We hope that others will follow our example, and help these families and communities who are suffering at this difficult time”.

Youghal Red Cross Awards Night
On Tuesday 9th. Sept. the Youghal Branch of the Irish Red Cross presented Certificates to the students who recently completed courses in Basic First Aid and Therapeutic Hand Care.
The Chairperson of the Youghal Red Cross, Elaine Mulcare welcomed everyone to the night’s proceedings. She complimented all those who had spent their time learning skills that would be of benefit both to the community and themselves. She added that a Red Cross Certificate is valuable because it has worldwide recognition and she hoped that after three years everyone would be back to update their certs. She also mentioned that the Red Cross was always looking for new members and hoped they would consider that option.
