ON SUNDAY 17TH JUNE YOUGHAL4ALL ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO HOSTING THE RESCHEDULED TEDDY BEARS PICNIC IN THE GREEN PARK, YOUGHAL.

Unfortunately, due to the bad weather, the active community group had to postpone the Teddy Bear Picnic on Sunday June 3rd. The event is open to the public with lots of family entertainment free from two to four. A large crowd attended last year and fingers and Bears Paws crossed for sunny weather this Sunday!

Also on the day Ken Brookes will present the group with branded “Youghal4All” jackets to be used by the community ambassadors whilst welcoming visitors to the town. We expect this to take place at about 3 p.m.

Paula Tutty has been working hard organising the family day out for June 17th in Greenpark. We have been trying to ensure almost everything is free says Paula. A great family day should be had by all. Anyone with ideas/ offers of help etc should email youghalcc@gmail.com

December 8th is a Catholic Church holiday (Feast of the Immaculate Conception) is when people normally start shopping for Christmas gifts, and is one of the busiest shopping days in the run up to Christmas. Youghal people fondly remember when ‘Pasley’s old man’ was on display, in the run up to Christmas, at the old Pasley’s grocery shop at North Main Street, Youghal. Hope the picture here reminds you of Christmas past.

The History of ‘Pasley’s Old Man’

‘Pasley’s Old Man’ was made in Germany in 1870 and was displayed in Pasley’s shop window every Christmas from 1880  -2002. In August 2003 Pasley’s transferred its business to Brookes Supervalu and has been on display there ever since.
The statement ‘ I never got a “drop” at Pasley’s’ refers to the fact that alcohol was never sold in Pasley’s for many years.
The ‘bottle’ of Guiness is actually a Christmas cracker and dates back to about 1910. To date, 4 generations of the Brookes family have been involved in the grocery trade in Youghal since John Brookes started at Pasley’s in Youghal in 1888.

Derek Kiely reports

There has also been fantastic support financially from Kevin Curtin, Mackeys Central Star and Brookes Super Valu towards the kit sponsorship for the team and last Saturday the club wanted to show their appreciation to these three sponsors by way of a presentation of a new Youghal Kit Bag and County Final commemorative jersey. Club Chairman Dave Kilgannon said “The buzz about the town in the last week has been fantastic, with an eight day turn around it focused everyones mind immediately on the final and it has been a very busy and exciting time at Youghal GAA Club. Finals are exciting and wonderful for everyone in the town and the surrounding areas, but they are expensive too and with that in mind I want to thank from the bottom of my heart, the businesses and supporters for their backing. I would like to single out Kevin Curtin, Noel and Kay Mackey and Ken Brookes his son Peter and the Brookes family for their support in sponsoring our teams kit for the final and the kit bags, it is a very generous gesture and we are very grateful”.

Youghal’s streets turned green for St. Patrick’s Day 2011

The sun shone brightly on the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Youghal which was, again, organised by the Youghal Pipe Band, under the supervision of piper Michael McCarthy. The colourful parade began at 3.00pm at the north end of the town at Dolphin Square, where all the different floats, clubs, societies and business displays assembled. Thousands of people crammed the streets to see the colourful dancers, marching bands, theatre troupes and local groups proudly showcasing the cultural diversity of the town, which was the highlight of the Seachtain na Gaeilge celebration.

The Youghal town councillors, including newly-elected TD, Sandra McLellan, and Mayor of Youghal, Mary Linehan-Foley, cheered the parade as it passed the town hall with adults and children alike waving tri-colours, shamrocks, leprechaun hats and fancy dress costumes in forty shades of green.

Youghal Pipe Band leader Michael McCarthy who organised the event said, “We were very pleased with the support for this year’s event. The weather was fantastic and everybody was in great form. The floats, displays and input from clubs and organisations was particularly good this year and made it very difficult for the judging committee to pick the best floats. I would like to thank all sponsors and everyone who helped to make this event such a resounding success. It was great to see the event broadcasted live again this year by YoughalOnline.com and local broadcaster Shane Supple and cameramen Kieran McCarthy and David Farrell deserve great credit.”

Well done to the Youghal Pipe Band in organising a very successful St. Patrick’s Day parade and we look forward to next year’s event. Beidh an craic nócha!

Youghal Pipe Band leader Michael McCarthy made a special presentation to Ken Brooke from Brookes Super Valu in recognition of his sponsorship of the event each year.

The long awaited charity Head And Wax Shave incorporating a fantastic raffle in aid of The Laura Lynn Foundation took place at Berties Bar, North Main St. Youghal, last Friday night 15th Oct. 2010. Photo: Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com Email: news@youghalonline.com

The fun started at 9pm. Family and friends came along to support the Youghal Super Valu staff who organised and volunteered for this great cause. Emma and Micheala Bailey from ‘Team Bailey’ Hair Salon did the head shave and Norma Stone and Vicki O’Sullivan, from ‘Tone and Tan’ did the wax service, to the delight of all who attended (except for those who participated in the excruciating painful event of course). Well done to all involved, lots of money was raised on the night and the cheque presentation will follow shortly.
