‘Queen Of The Sea 2011’ Youghal 15th – 17th July 2011
Three festivals in one
The Queen of the Sea Contest bears much resemblance to that of the world-famous Rose of Tralee in that it is a contest for young ladies, from whom the winner is chosen according to her hopes, dreams & ambitions and her attitude toward social responsibility. It is three festivals in one, comprising the Queen of the Sea Contest, a Youghal Food Festival and a ‘Myrtle Groove’ Music Festival.

The ‘groove’ will persist throughout the weekend in what marks a serious upgrade in Youghal’s provision of musical entertainment. Along with local artistes, Cork’s 96FM Gig Rig will play live from the Market Square, KILA will perform on Nealon’s and there will be music and dance of a traditional genre also. A ‘Mardi Gras’ Parade featuring the queens will traverse the town at 7 pm that night.
Food…
The Youghal Food Festival will be officially opened by the Celebrity TV Chef, Rachel Allen. There will be a farmers’ market, cooking demonstrations, teaching and tasting events. Throughout the three days, there will be breakfast, brunch, lunch and snacks available all made from local produce with lots of choice. Festival menus will be available in local restaurants in the evenings.
Come and watch TV celebrity chef Rachel Allen cut the ribbon for the official opening the food festival and wander through the many food and craft stalls where you can treat yourself to a taste of the finest local produce to be found in the area, Visit Corks 96FM GIG RIG playing live from Market Square, or let the kids join in the fun, and enter the crab catching or the sand castle building competition, join the circus workshop, enter your dog in the Dog Show or join one of the other many fun activities planned for you during the festival.
Girls….

Thanks to the very kind services of Cork Prison, concerts at St Mary’s Collegiate Church will be a lot more comfortable. Regular monthly concerts have been held in the church over the last few months, organised by Sacred Root Productions, with acts such as Mick Flannery, John Spillane, Liam O’Maonlaoi, Kila and only last weekend Declan O’Rourke.
As part of their education programme, Cork Prison take on sewing projects in communities to keep the prisoners occupied and at the same time teaching them a new skill. Oona Colin, Events Co-ordinator of St Mary’s Collegiate Church contacted Colm O’Herlihy, Education Officer and asked him if he would be interested in taking on a project of making almost 60 cushions for the pews above at the church. After speaking with his colleagues, Colm was delighted to take on the project collaborating with Orla Hannon, Industrial Supervisor and Mary Mulholland, Health Education Officer with certain prisoners, in the making of these cushions. Measurements were taken of each pew, as they all vary in size and the result is beautifullly coloured, thick cushions for the enjoyment of concert goers and tourists alike. The foam and fabric were very kindly supplied by Cork Prison.

The church is currently undergoing a little facelift, making it much more pleasing to the eye. The very old and used plastic partition separating the chancel from the nave is also due to be replaced by a beautiful royal blue velvet curtain, more appropriate to the setting of this beautiful 13th century church.
A fundraising concert is planned for the end of May, with the collaboration of local community groups, in the hope of raising funds towards installing a heating system. Heating an ancient stone building such as this, with high ceilings is quite a task and quite costly. We hope that the people of Youghal and surrounding areas will come along and support this good cause, making concerts more enjoyable and comfortable for all.
St Mary’s Collegiate Church is available for rent for weddings, exhibitions, concerts and shows by calling 083 360 6507.

Singing in a velvet-tinged bartitone with a killer falsetto….it’s a rare gift that his music can bear comparison with so many classic era troubadours, Fred Neil, Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen while still sounding so completely original” Nigel Williamson, Uncut
Declan O’Rourke used to be one of Ireland’s best kept secrets, but rave reviews for his debut album ‘Since Kyabram’, a growing international fanbase and an enviable collection of eminent devotees, including Paul Weller, Snow Patrol and Kate Rusby, are rapidly changing that.
On its release in Ireland, ‘Since Kyabram’ reached double platinum status and garnered Hot Press magazine’s ‘Best Debut Album’ award. A major record deal with V2 and a publishing deal with BMG followed, as did patronage from his peers – invitations to support Snow Patrol at Marlay Park in Dublin, Teddy Thompson on his UK tour, The Divine Comedy for dates in Germany and the U.K., and to perform at the legendary 100 Club at the request of Paul Weller.
The buzz is growing, based on the simplicity of great songs and a unique voice. Declan’s lyrics touch on all aspects of the individual, his songs focus on the centre of everyday emotions and his voice irresistibly draws the listener in. He has an understated charm, a quick-wittedness that make him highly endearing live and equally at home playing to one person as he is to thousands.
From the opening melody of ‘No Place To Hide’, the first song on ‘Since Kyabram’, to the final key of ‘Marrying The Sea’, Declan’s ability to tell a story unfolds. Each track on the album gives a feeling of being part of a collection of short films; the connecting thread being Declan’s flowing and dreamy lyrics. The album embodies the roots of his Irish heritage, but also has a distinct rock edge, reflecting, in part, his time spent in Australia from age fourteen to his return to Ireland

Liam Ó Maonlaí
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 6TH ST MARYS COLLEGIATE CHURCH YOUGHAL CO.CORK
Liam Ó Maonlaí
Born in 1964 mount Carmel Hospital. His Mother Eithne Lydon was a trained pianist and Actor from Galway. Her Father was also a passionate piano player who bought his own piano at the age of 19. Liam grew up with this piano in the house. It was on this piano he discovered a deep sense of musical satisfaction. Liam’s father taught him to sing in his native tongue. ‘He transmitted a love to me that no book or teacher could’ the love was of humanity expressed through culture. Liam recognises the huge importance of culture in the development of the human species. ‘We are connected. It has been said again and again and again. God knows the ecstasy that lies ahead. When the penny drops and we realise the wealth in music and culture the world over. The flowering of all life’
In 1981 he won the all Ireland final as bódhran player under 18. He has been a finalist on the tin whistle, piano and as a singer many years over. In Athlone he entered a group of dancers and led them to victory in a set dancing all Ireland. In Ennis in 1985 he and Fiachna Ó Braonain ,with the enchanting presence of Maria Doyle Kennedy won a music award called Gradam Shlogadh. They had put together a rhythm and blues group with all songs written in Irish. This was the seed beginning of Hothouse Flowers, which went on to be one of Ireland’s most successful rock bands and released seven albums. All through the Hothouse Flowers years, Liam remained faithful to his traditional roots. ‘Traditional music does not belong to me. I belong to it. The same as the land.’

Liam as been involved in the Nuclear Free Future movement for some time. In 2001 he helped host the same ceremony in Carnsore point and Wexford town. At the end of 2006 he will attend the nuclear free future award ceremony in Navajo country. In 2004 he was a guest of the barefoot college ,Tillonia, Rajisthan India. He played at the university in Jaipur in the company of the finest regional musicians around.
Liam recorded the album Rian with his close friend, renowned producer John Reynolds in 2002. It will be released in Ireland November 2005 and is also being released America, Canada, Japan, UK and Europe. He is releasing the album through Rian Records his own label.
Liam went to Mali in January 2006 where he played at the renowned Desert festival with Uillean Piper Paddy Keenan and participated in the making of a documentary. Himself and Paddy played with musicians from the greater region from very well known artists to local tribes people. It was an amazing experience of communication between distant people and races through the medium of music, and he learnt of the close relationship the Irish harp and the African Kora.
Liam has also travelled extensively in Australia, Japan, America, Europe, Scandinavia, Morocco and India and has played and continues to play with the traditional players of these places. ‘I believe the style known as séan nos, carries a sense of the soul of the land and the people who are awake in that land. I feel, when in the company of other cultures, the singing of this style opens a window into what it is that connects us. Every country has it’s own séan nos.’words particularly English words are not enough. They have been used to lie on a grand scale. They continue to be used to manipulate and confuse. Music has a purpose that remains to be seen. The potential is beyond imagination. ‘
