Schools Visit
Many thanks to 2012 Cork Ladies captain Rena Buckey who visited all of the primary schools recently with the Brendan Martin Cup and spoke to all the pupils, signed autographs and posed for multiple photos. The Club was really honoured to show case one of Cork’s current All-Stars in our town and her visit has already encouraged some more girls to try out our fantastic game. To all local schools, Club officers who organised and accompanied Rena on the day many thanks for your time and effort which was appreciated by all pupils.

U16GFL Eochaill 4-8 Watergrasshill 1-4
Youghal travelled to Watergrasshill for their first game of this years league,on a wet cold day. The weather did not dampem the girls performance and ran out easy winners. This was helped somewhat that watergrasshill could only field 13 players so it was decided to play 13a side. It was the Youghal girls who got off to the brighter start by working hard for each other and taking some fine scores. The score of the half came when a long ball played out of defence was won by Shauna O Connell who turned her marker and made a good run to the 22 and kicked a high ball towards goal and it was Youghals Caira Crowley who won the ball and then turned the full back to drive a great shot to the roof of the net.
As the second half began the mentors made a number of changes, and it was very encouraging to see the girls coming off the bench to perform as good as the starting 13. The 2nd half was like a repeat of the 1st with Youghal well in control. With Youghal taking some more fine scores the signs are good for this young under 16 side. With our local derby with near neighbours Inch or next home game, this win was an important win to build confidence in this side. The Inch game will be played on sat 23rd of feb at 2p.m. Magners Hill.
Team; A.Arthur, N.Kelly, E.O.Brien, S.Kenelly, L.Dempsey, S.Monaghan, L.White, A.Macarty, C.Mulcathy, S.O.Connell, C.O.Keeffe, C.Crowley, C.O.Keeffe, E.Nolan, E.Farrell, K.Colman.

The theme of the week will be around developing proper football techniques and team spirit. “From an early age boys and girls need to be thought the techniques of football properly and that’s what we do”, says Charlie. “Underage structures, at county and club are the future of our game and any opportunity we can give to young players to improve their game the better. “Clubs whose players attend camps benefit in turn and for those new to the game it puts them in the right direction in a friendly atmosphere”. Youghal Ladies Football Club Notes    YLFC Notes 03/03/2013

U16GFL Youghal 1-4 Inch Rovers 3-6
This was Youghal’s second leauge game of the year and we were up against local rivals Inch. It was a fine day and like the weather we got a fine display of football. Both teams went for it from the off but it was Inch who got of to the brighter start with two early scores, but then it was the turn of the the Youghal girls to get on the score board and before long youghal had overtaken Inch. This game was played at a high tempo and some fine periods of play was on show. The game would of been all square at half time only for a defensive mistake by Youghal just before the break that Inch took full advantage to leave the scoreline at half time 1-3 to 2-3 in Inch’s favor.
The second half saw a more determent Inch side take more control of this game, and were putting a lot of pressure on the Youghal defence. As the half went on Inch looked the fitter side and were picking off some fine scores. It must be said only that for our six backs and keeper who put in a super shift the score line could have been much higher in Inch’s favor.
Team: A.Arthur, N.Kelly,E.Farrell, S.Monaghan, A.O.Sullivan, L.Dempsey, E.O.Brien, L.White, S.Kenneally, C.O.Keeffe, S.O.Connell, C.Landers, C.Crowley, C.O.Keeffe, C.Mulcahy(C)

League Updates
Most of our teams are now up and running in the East Cork league. Our U12 B team were beaten by a much stronger Mayfield outfit on Sat 16th of March where the early damage of conceeding 2-3 in the first 5 minutes proved to be too much to overcome. After playing with a strong breeze and the hill, Mayfield lead by 4-12 to 0-0 at half time. In fairness to the Youghal girls they never gave up and kept trying until the final whistle where Mayfield ran out deserved winners on a score line of 7-13 to 1-1. Next up for our U12B team will be Cloyne. The remaining games in the league for this developing team will be against Delaneys, RockbanB, Bride Rovers, Glanmire B, Midleton, Inch Rovers A, Na Piarsaig, Fermoy A and Aghada.
Our U12A team will commence their lesgue shortly and have been grouped with Rockban A, St. Colmans, Carrigtwohill, Erins Own, Glanmire A, St. Nicks, Fermoy B, Watergrasshill, Inch Rovers B and Lisgoold.
On bank holiday Monday our U14s made the short journey to Killeagh to take on neighbours Inch Rovers who simply out classed the Youghal girls.

Peil Camp
Preparations are almost complete for our Peil Camp. Any outstanding deposits should be returned to your team manager over the next 2 weeks. The camp will run from April 2nd to 5th during the Easter Holidays and a few places still remain for any player who wishes to take part.

WITH glorious sunshine basking down on Youghal beach on Saturday 29th September, Youghal GAA Club and all of its units, Senior, Eochaill Óg, Ladies Football and Camogie held their inaurgual Fun Walk in association with Rebel Óg and the Mercy Hospital Trust. With over 150 juvenile members decked out in the maroon and gold taking part and supported by parents, grand-parents, babies in buggies and family pets the group of approximately 400 congregated on Youghal’s promenade for a 5 km walk out along the beach to Redbarn and back.

The location couldn’t have been better and more importantly safer for the group as the beach offered the freedom to walk, run or sprint with some of the juvenile members taking it as an opportunity to get some extra training under the watchful eye of their respective mentors who acted as marshals on the day. Everyone really enjoyed this Club event as it gave all the opportunity to get out in the fresh air and exercise on one of East Cork’s beautiful beaches and also raise funds for both the Mercy Hospital Trust and underage clubs in Youghal GAA. Every juvenile on the walk was presented with a Rebel Óg watch and also received a RSA reflective armband which no doubt will be put to great use now that the walking bug has bitten!!.

Youghal GAA and all of its units would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sponsored the kids on this Fun Walk. Finally to our Fun Walk coordinator, Aine Martin and her committee well done on organising a fantastic morning.

Youghal Ladies Football Club Notes

U12GFC Youghal Vs Delaneys
Youghal travelled to Dublin Hill on the fringes of East Cork, yet still in the heart of the North Side of cork city to play Delaney’s in the quarter final of U12 East Cork Championship. On a lovely evening with a good travelling crowd and a very welcoming crowd from Delaneys the match got off to a great start for Youghal . Some great scores from our inside forward line put us ahead and this was the theme for the evening with Youghal winning out comfortably. Every player contributed to the score line and the bench was called upon where many players got a run out. The backline were never really tested in this match but a stronger test awaits against the plate Finalist’s runners up Cloyne. All players are fully aware of the challenge ahead especially when both sides met in the Plate Final this spring . A big thank you to all parents that travelled and assisted in car pooling. The assistance on the line from members and Delaney’s for the hospitality they showed to us on the evening.

Unfortunately our U12 championship venture ended on Saturday going down to a stronger Cloyne team on a scoreline of 2-4 to 0-3.

U10GFL
Our U10s finished off their league campaign recently with 2 wins over city teams Mayfield and St. Nicks. We now await the draw for the league semi-finals which should be scheduled over the next week or 2. In addition to the league semi-final we will also take part in 2 blitz over the coming weekends, Ballyphehane on Sept 15th and Passage on Sept 22nd.

U8GF Update

What a summer it has been for the Youghal LFC U8’s! Our match programme started out on the 19th July with a home game against Carrigtwohill. The match got under way at 6.30 and to say it was a perfect evening for football was an understatement – it was a beautiful balmy evening and the girls served up some beautiful balmy football to match the weather. There was a great turn out and the girls had a great time.

Next up was St. Colmans all the way out in Shanagarry. It was a miserable evening and a lot of phone calls were made to make sure we were still going ahead with the game. As it turned out the rain stopped and a great crowd turned up. The travelling crowd were subsequently treated to another great game which they thoroughly enjoyed despite getting a tad wet.

The games kept coming and next on the list was an away trip to Fermoy. Fermoy have been getting huge numbers turning up to training but I think its fair to say that Youghal looked like the home team that night with the support we had. Again, it was well worth the journey as Youghal put in another fine display with everyone going home happy.

Last up in this series of games was an away trip just up the road to Killeagh to play our old rivals Inch. As is always the case in local derbies, there was a lot riding on this U8 match. Parish pride and local bragging rights were at stake (thankfully every blow wasn’t a funeral as D’unbelieveables might say). Again there was a great crowd and again all the girls from both sides had a great time and went back the road in great form.

It was great to see the girls enjoying themselves so much and it was also great to see the improvement in their football as the series of games went on. This had a lot to do with the positive support shown by all the parents/guardians/friends/relatives who turned up in droves for the games through hail, rain and shine – long may it continue and thanks for the great support.

Next up is a Blitz in Ballyphehane on Sept 15th followed by another blitz in Passage West on the 22nd Sept. Times and dates will be sent via text – if you are not receiving the texts please contact either Ivan O’Flynn or Paul Kennedy.

U14 Girls

In preparation for our upcoming championship semi-final against Aghada our U14s took on Midleton in Magners Hill. A very entertaining hour of football was on show for all present with both sides giving it their all. Best of luck to the U14 camogie team in the County final against Enniskeane.

19/02/12   U/14GF  Youghal 4-05 versus Erins Own 5-07
This was the under 14s second game and our first at home in the East Cork league.
The opposition this time were going to be tougher proposition than our last opponents, due to a number of the Eris Own team being on the Cork panel. Erins Own hit the ground running by getting on the score board early in the game with some well worked goals and points, and at times Youghal  found it hard to cope with this Erins Own team. Midway in the first half Youghal started getting on the ball, and there were signs of promise in this Youghal team.
After the team talk and a number of changes made, the girls fought well and hard to get themselves back into this game, by moving some fast ball into the forwards who took full advantage of the chances the team were creating . Our defence put in a super performance from goal keeper to the backs and subs who gave their all to the team. For this team to score 4-5 in the second half we as mentors are very happy with the progress been made, and it’s all down to the hard work the girls are putting in at training after school and on Saturday mornings so well done to all.
Team:  A.Arthur , E. Farrell(c) N.Kelly, E.Nolan, H. O’Connell, C.Landers,  L.Sheehen, C. O’Keefe, L. White, S.Hannon, S.O.Connell, E. O’Brien, C. Crowley, L. Dempsey, C.O.Keefe.
Subs: C.Smith, M. Hannon, A.O.Neill, S. Keane, M.Brophy

26/02/12   U/14GF  Youghal 10-07 versus Carrigtwohill 4-02
On our third outing of the league, it was expected that this Youghal team were going to win, but it was a big surprise the manner in which they did. From the throw in, Youghal went on the attack with some fast moving football and intelligent play and with about 15 minutes gone had secured a commanding lead. Scores were coming from all over the forward line and at times our midfielders got in on the act. When our defence were called upon they were up to the challenge with a super individual performance from our centre half back Chloe Landers. Needless to say when the ball was coming out of defence it was Chloe who had the ball in her hands. This was further complimented by the two wing backs Megan Brophy and Lucy Sheehan. At half time we made a number of changes and the mentors were really impressed with all the girls that came on and continued carrying the game to Carrigtwohill. This gives the mentors plenty of food for thought for future selections. On a whole, this was an impressive display from the whole panel, with scores coming from almost half the team at various stages throughout the game. Particularly impressive in the forward line on this occasion were Louise Dempsey and the O’Keefe sisters, Cathriona and Clodagh. Again, mentors were very pleased with the progress being made each game by this young team. Well done to all the players and a big thank you to all the supporters.
Team:  A. Arthur , E. Farrell(c) N.Kelly, E. Nolan, M. Brophy, C.Landers,  L.Sheehen, C. O’Keefe, L. White, S. Keneally, S. O’Connell, E. O’Brien, C. Crowley, L. Dempsey, C.O’Keefe

Day trip to Fingue

The long awaited trip to Kerry which was anticipated by all went ahead last Saturday the 3rd March. This trip was planned at the start of the year and was pushed out from February to March due to weather issues in North Kerry.

47 Players from both groups U12/14 and very welcome support from parents took to the bus at 9am from Club Aras in Youghal. The Bus trip to Killarney for the first stop ended up with a small bit of a shopping event compliments of “Claire’s” accessories at the outlet Centre. The fashion on show was a sight with the whole event and tour been christened the“Bling Bling Tour 2012”.

We arrived in North Kerry just after lunch for our first match with the U12s. We had some good spells of play from all players but ended up losing to a very good team. The U12 team is in transition of development, blending those just out of U10 grade with current U12 players. The year will have a different focus on development, improving the basic skill level at this grade and full inclusion of all players.

The U14 game went ahead just after and from the off the challenge was very strong by Finuge. There were some very noticeable individual battles on the field with Finuge which had some gracious comments by the chair of Finuge club.

Finuge in North Kerry have senior ladies football and the under age structure of the club has some serious coaching going on. The club was voted Club of the year in Kerry in 2011 and once we arranged this challenge we were aware that it was a strong club with good football roots. We learnt a lot more about individual players and our own abilities as a team from this day which we hope will stand to us on in the near future.

The hospitality shown to us by this club was very welcome with refreshments served before our journey home. We presented Finuge with a shield in appreciation for hosting us and currently it is been considered in a Memorial tournament for one of their senior players who passed away following an accident last year. It is a very good thought to know Youghal Ladies Football is involved in such considerations on a tournament outside of our own county.

We would like to thank the Parents; Siobhán, Marie , Alison, Niamh and Caroline who gave 100% on the day and without that extra bit of help it wouldn’t have gone off so smoothly. And of Course the players, they were a credit to their parents, a credit to themselves and a credit to represent their club the way they did….BLING BLING!

‘Queen Of The Sea’  Set To Be Youghal’s Best Festival Yet. – By Christy Parker

YOUGHAL’S 2011 QUEEN OF THE SEA FESTIVAL was officially launched in the town hall reception area recently. Details unveiled at the launch revealed a highly impressive effort to bring to the town a festival in the total meaning of the term, with a multitude of diverse attractions in waiting. The weather…the blessed weather is all that’s needed. .

Organisers, business people, politicians and –mercifully- the more eye-catching presence of 35 young female representatives of various local businesses, attired summer fare, gathered for the launch. The occasion was smiled upon by blue skies, enriched by a solo harpist and complimented by wonderful food. The omens are good!

Following some time for social interaction, the 50 plus attendance turned their attention to the podium, from where Queen of the Sea Chairwoman Sally Tivy-Perks and  Youghal Mayor Eoin Coyne delivered words of faith, hope and encouragement, as did Sinn Fein TD Sandra McLellan and Eileen Harney, liaison officer with the RNLI, one of two organisations –along with Childline- being supported by the festival.

Mayor Coyne, in his first official engagement since his elevation to the chain, expressed himself said the festival, which enjoyed great success in its inaugural year of 2010, was already “fast becoming the pinnacle of the summer festival season” in Youghal. The mayor gave credit to “the Youghal Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, Youghal Town Council, the YSEDG and the organising committee” for bringing the festival to fruition. He wished the queens the very best of luck and wished “locals and tourists alike,” much enjoyment over the festive weekend. Enthusiastic applause followed the conclusion of his maiden mayoral speech.

Fundraising

The chairwoman then thanked further sponsors, including 96FM and SECAD before handing the microphone to Ms Harney. The officer explained that the lifeboat service’s survival is immensely reliant on the support of local communities. “We receive a tiny amount of government funding,” she revealed before explaining that the RNLI needs €3m annually to stay afloat, so to speak, almost all of which comes from voluntary contributions. She said had “the best job in the world” working for an organisation of whom 97% of its members (1,600), “are fundraisers.” In considering itself effectively “a family organisation,” she said the RNLI would ensure that those attending the family festival would be afforded a warm welcome, including harbour tours.

Three festivals in one

The Queen of the Sea Contest bears much resemblance to that of the world-famous Rose of Tralee in that it is a contest for young ladies, from whom the winner is chosen according to her hopes, dreams & ambitions and her attitude toward social responsibility.

Sally Tivy-Perks then gave a summary of the programme of events –expanded from last year- that the festival intends to deliver. Effectively, she said it was three festivals in one, comprising the Queen of the Sea Contest, a Youghal Food Festival and a ‘Myrtle Groove’ Music Festival.

Music…

The festivities commence with the Myrtle Groove gig on Nealon’s Quay at 3 pm on Friday July 15th, wherein various live bands will entertain throughout the day. The ‘groove’ will persist throughout the weekend in what marks a serious upgrade in Youghal’s provision of musical entertainment. Along with local artistes, Cork’s 96FM Gig Rig will play live from the Market Square, KILA will perform on Nealon’s and there will be music and dance of a traditional genre also. A ‘Mardi Gras’ Parade featuring the queens will traverse the town at 7 pm that night.

Food…

The Youghal Food Festival will be officially opened by the Celebrity TV Chef, Rachel Allen. There will be a farmers’ market, cooking demonstrations, teaching and tasting events. Throughout the three days, there will be breakfast, brunch, lunch and snacks available all made from local produce with lots of choice. Festival menus will be available in local restaurants in the evenings.

Come and watch TV celebrity chef Rachel Allen cut the ribbon for the official opening the food festival and wander through the many food and craft stalls where you can treat yourself to a taste of the finest local produce to be found in the area, Visit Corks 96FM GIG RIG playing live from Market Square, or let the kids join in the fun, and enter the crab catching or the sand castle building competition, join the circus workshop, enter your dog in the Dog Show or join one of the other many fun activities planned for you during the festival.

A multitude of other attractions, including water races and busking, will run throughout the day. The 2011 Queen of the Sea will be crowned at 6.30 on Saturday night, followed by a Queens Banquet at the Mall Arts centre.

…And fun

Sunday’s many attractions include family races in the Green Park (Spud and spoon, fastest daddy, hairy legs, wheel barrow, three legged, wife-carrying, etc), alongside a dog show and various other entertainments such as wife-ccbucking bronco, obstacle course, face painting, circus workshop and so on and on….

Eoin said “I am delighted to be asked to officially launch the 2011 Queen of the Sea competition in its second year. It is fast becoming the pinnacle of the Summer festival season here in Youghal. Great credit is due to the Youghal Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, Youghal Town Council, the YSEDG and the organising committee for all the work that has gone on in the background in getting this off the ground. It is a chance for Youghal to showcase itself as one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the country. I would like to wish all the Queens the very best of luck in the Queen of the Sea competition as they showcase the many talents that the young people of our Town have to offer. Above all else, I hope that everyone, locals and tourists alike, thoroughly enjoy themselves over the Family Fun Festival”.

A wide range of events has been planned, with all participating events free of charge. The Festival will have three main themes or elements – the Queen of the Sea Contest, Youghal Food Festival and the Myrtle Groove Music Festival.

Stephen Ryan of Fota Widlife Park stated “As Chairman of the Failte Ireland Family Fun Hub in East Cork and West Waterford I am delighted that the Queen of The Sea Festival is on this July as it is one of the biggest events on the calendar for the hub and this year is going to be bigger and better than ever with a great focus on family entertainment which will bring plenty of visitors to the area.”

The second annual Queen of the Sea Contest is a traditional competition which has a very similar theme to that of the world-famous Rose of Tralee Competition. It is a contest for young ladies and the winner is chosen according to her hopes, dreams & ambitions and also her attitude toward social responsibility. Contestants are judged by personality not appearance. Each contestant is sponsored by a local business. It was an extremely popular event last year. Local businesswoman, Eileen Quill commented that “The Youghal Queen of the Sea Festival gives a tremendous boost to the local economy in particular the hospitality and food service enterprises, and is a great tourism amenity”.

The Youghal Food Festival will be officially opened by the Celebrity TV Chef, Rachel Allen. There will be a Farmers’ Market; Chefs will hold cooking demonstrations, teaching sessions and tasting events. Throughout the three days, there will be breakfast, brunch, lunch and snacks available all made from local produce with lots of choice. Festival menus will be available in local restaurants in the evenings. There will be lots of variety, and high quality foods on offer – from vegetarian to BBQ. The chefs will give tips on healthy eating, alongside sharing their personal favourites. A ‘Granny’s Favourite Recipe’ competition will take place.

Chairperson of the Festival Committee, Sal Tivy enthused “The Queen of the Sea Festival is unique this year in the sense that we have three festivals rolled into one – a First for Munster!”

Throughout the three days, there will be a full music programme in the form of Myrtle Groove. Live music is very much a part of the town’s culture and heritage. The people of Youghal are known for their love of music, and they celebrate it with craic agus ceol – music and good times. For three days, the sounds of free performances will be heard throughout Youghal. There will be opportunities giving the younger, local artists their chance to perform. Visit Cork’s 96FM Gig Rig playing live from Market Square. And this year, critically acclaimed band KILA will perform live on the Main Stage at Youghal’s Quay area. Alongside these live performances, there will also be music and dance workshops. And of course, the Ceilis, feiles and fleadhs which have been celebrated in Youghal for centuries, with song, dance and storytelling in the old Irish traditions. Music and entertainment will be provided by a multitude of local talented musicians.
