Claycastle course is considered to be one of the finest but toughest in Ireland. Not only do we hope that the club will benefit from this award, we hope that the town as a whole will also benefit through tourism from hosting major pitch and putt events in the future. Claycastle will host the 2012 National Matchplay Championships and we hope that this will help both the club and also business within the town of Youghal over the coming June weekend.

We thank everyone who has helped and continues to help in any way to keep the standard of the course at a high level, and we are honoured to receive this award. We are delighted that the continuous work that has been put into the course over the last twenty five years has not gone unnoticed and has all paid off and we look forward to another twenty five years of the course being in top condition.

We have recently created a Club website which we hope can bring information to any beginners thinking of taking up the great game of pitch and putt or players returning to play the game. The website will also be used in preperation for the upcoming National Matchplay Championships in June 2012.

Noel O’ Driscoll Memorial 2011

2 weeks ago saw the Noel O’ Driscoll Memorial prize for 2011 come to an end. Over the four days of play there was some great shooting out on the course where conditions were tough and the weather wasn’t on side for the majority of the tournament. We thank all who supported this prestigious competition and especially to those who have the course in such top condition day in day out. The overall winner of the prize was David Kenefick who produced some fine play and was a very worthy winner of the perpetual trophy. Although the weather wasn’t kind to us, over 100 cards were played in total.

Chairperson’s Prize 2011

The Chairperson’s prize sponsored by our chairman Martin Keohane was played for last weekend, Over the four days, weather conditions were again tough with rain around during most of the sessions. Although weather was poor, we were delighted with the turnout where 150 cards were played. We thank all who supported the competition. This was the last major of the year and scoring was close but it was James Howes who finished off his great season by adding the Chairperson’s Prize to the other wins this year.
Special mention to Paudie O’ Sullivan who had two ‘holes in one’ on Sunday afternoon in a row in the same round on hole 12 and 13 respectively. It is very rare to see this happen in the game and its a great achievement.

Membership in the Club is also on the increase, which is another positive going forward. We thank all who supported our captain Adrian Landers over the four days of competition and as always the course was in top order and no complaints were had. The weather was also on side for the players which made it more enjoyable in which to partake. It was very competitive over the few days where it was wide open up until the final card was handed in on Sunday afternoon.

There was a wonderful array of prizes, but the overall winner who played very steady over the course of the tournament with a supurb score was James Howes who won by 2 shots from David Poynton in what was a very competitive afternoon of pitch and putt.

A special congratulations must go to Martin Keohane, the winner of the ‘hole in one’ prize. Martin had in fact two aces in one round on Sunday afternoon. Club captain Adrian Landers said ” I am delighted to see such a turnout with over 200 cards played and we hope the Club can go from strength to strength in the future”.

Claycastle Pitch and Putt 25th Anniversary flag raising ceremony

It was a red letter day for Claycastle Pitch and Putt earlier this week when a flag was hoisted marking the 25th anniversary of the Club.

Claycastle Pitch and Putt Club celebrating 25th year anniversary.

Founded in 1986 the club has grown over the years to become one of the most active clubs in Youghal, it currently has over 80 members.  Originally based in the grounds of the Hilltop Hotel, the then town council granted land to the club in 1984 and the construction of the 18 hole course got underway.  Two years later in 1986 the club was officially open, spearheaded by the late Noel O Driscoll; other founding members included Daisy Swayne and Tom McCarthy.

Raising the 25th anniversary flag this week were Mossie Swayne, the husband of Daisy, and Noel O Driscoll’s wife Margaret.  Other members who have been a driving force in the club over the last quarter of a century are Michael Landers and the current Lady Captain Phil Mangan.  Also present at the ceremony was the current president Thomas Bulman, club secretary Anthony O’Loughlin said “the club has been successful due in no small part to the efforts of many over 25 years and it has been a very active club in the community and has been very popular with the elderly in the town.  It’s a great pastime for the elderly and while it’s a gentle sport there’s also a great competitive edge to it and it’s great to be going strong after 25 years” Events during the year to mark the 25th anniversary include the Mens’ Munster Matchplay Championship on May 28th and 29th.

Sunday 27th June saw our players in all three grades attempt to
qualify for the Gents National Strokeplay 2010. In the Juniors our
sole representative was Brendan McCaughey who was playing in the event
for the first time. Brendan played solid pitch and putt to return a
score of 112 which was good enough for 5th place and qualification for
Ryston. In the intermediate section Don Sheehan, Ted Kelly and Johan
Brosnan played the tricky Riverside course in Bishopstown. Despite the
efforts of Ted and Don they were unable to post the necessary 106 to
qualify. Johan’s return of 105 saw him safely through. The senior
section was played on our own Claycastle course in extremely testing
conditions. With just 13 places up for grabs the 6 Claycastle players
had their work cut out to qualify. Gary O’ Sullivan 105, Anthony O’
Loughlin 106, Paudie O’ Sullivan 108 and Colin Sheehan 108 all
qualified comfortably. Ed Long and club captain  Martin Keohane on 111
had an anxious wait to see if their score was good enough for
qualification. As the wind picked up it looked like the lads would
both qualify but unfortunately Martin missed out on the back 18s with
Ed taking the last place. The club will be represented at the finals
by 7 players who will take on the cream of the country on the weekend
of 24th/25th July at the Ryston course in Newbridge Co.Kildare. Very
best of luck to all the players, Bring home the big one lads!!
Congratulations to Colin Sheehan who finished in 8th place in the
Gents Munster Strokeplay at the Riverdale course in Neneagh Co.
Tipperary. Colin carded and excellent 98 to make the final 18 and went
on to shoot -4 for the playoff in very tough conditions. In the junior
grade Johan Brosnan struggled to find his best form but still managed
to finish in 16th place overall. Well done lads.

National Matchplay Championship 2010-Larkspur Park, Cashel.
The flagship event of the pitch and putt season was played for over
the June bank holiday weekend. Taking their place in the field of 64
at the National Matchplay at Larkspur Park in Cashel were Claycastles
Anthony O’ Loughlin and Johan Brosnan. In round one Anthony overcame a
young and spirited Anthony Mahoney from the Glenville club in Dublin
by a margin of 3&2. Johan had the tough task of playing Tipperary
Inter-county player John O’ Meara form the Riverdale club in Neneagh.
Johan got off to a flier and was -7 for the first 8 holes and had
established a lead that he would hold on to and record a terrific
victory by a margin of 5&4. In round two Anthony found himself paired
against an inform John Cahill (Fermoy) and was soundly beaten 10&9.
Johan’s reward for his first round triumph was a tie against former
national champion Leo O’ Reilly (Glenville). After a tense match Johan
edged the game by 4&3. We were now in the business end of the
championship with just 16 players remaining. Another Tipp man stood in
Johans way, this time it was current Irish international and second
favourite for the tournament Paul O’ Brien (Templemore). Johan cared
little for his opponents lofty reputation as one of the best match
players in the game and stormed into an early lead of 3up through 11
holes and notable 8 under par! Word was spreading around the course of
a major upset, the gallery flocked to witness the young prodigy from
the seaside and one of the greatest matches of the championship. With
the home crowd willing their man on Johan refused to buckle under the
intense pressure and closed out an historic victory by a margin of
4&3. In the scorching Cashel  heat their were just 8 players remaining
and they were swiftly called for battle again with Johan paired
against Dublin’s top player John Crangle (Loughlinstown). Crangles
pitching was of the highest order and he quickly established a
commanding lead of 3 up. Johans spirit and attitude was praised by
many in earlier rounds and he dug deep again to claw his way back into
contention to go 2 down with 12 holes remaining. However Crangle
continued his fine form and closed out the game by 5&4. Crangle went
on to loose the final to Collins Chris Scannell. Johan represented
himself and his club with great distinction over the weekend, the
manner and spirit in which he played and respected each opponent has
to be praised. In an era where the win at all cost mentality seems to
prevail amongst most sportspeople Johan stood out above the rest by
playing with a smile on his face and a never say die attitude. Johan
was described by many spectators as ‘a breath of fresh air’ and he
truly done the club proud over the weekend, well done Yogi!!
Congratulations to Anthony O’ Loughlin, ColinSheehan and Johan Brosnan
who all qualified from their respective grades for the Gents Munster
Strokeplay which will be played at the Riverdale course in Neneagh in
two weeks time. Best of luck in the finals lads.

Holiday weekend. After  four days and eight rounds of play Don Sheehan
emerged victorious by just one stroke from Martin Dalton. There was  a
great turnout by the members with 170 cards played. Chairperson Joy
Bryan and Lady Captain Phil Mangan paid tribute to Thomas’s years of
dedication and tireless work in our club over the past number of
years. Thomas has been a hands on President in his time in the
position and is always willing and able to help out with any task be

National Scramble 2010- Douglas/Ballinlough (Cork City)
Our scramble team of Don Sheehan, Colin Sheehan and Johan Brosnan put
in a superb effort at this years National Scramble. The lads performed
excellently on day one when they returned a nett score of 68.33 which
was 30 under par for the 36 holes. Cunnigar led the way overnight on
63.66, so despite the lads display it was still all to do heading into
the final 54 holes on Sunday. All the effort on Saturday proved futile
as the lads’ on route to Douglas on Sunday morning were delayed by a
flat tyre and missed their tee time by 20 minutes and were
unceremoniously disqualified from the competition. A disappointing end
to the challenge of one of the favourites and a sour taste left in the
mouth for the team and club.
Congratulations to Anthony O’ Loughlin and Johan Brosnan who qualified
out of tough sections in Collins for the Gents National Matchplay.
Both players will be playing in the Matchplay for the first time on
the June Bank Holiday weekend at the stunning Larkspur Park course in

Claycastle Pitch and Putt Club

Report 11/04/10

Our juveniles recorded a superb win in the Cork County Team event
played at the tricky Crosshaven course last Saturday. With just four
players available with Conor Farrell unable to travel due to sickness
the odds were against Claycastle with four scores to count. Stephen
Sheehan, David Poynton, Josh Whelan and Mark Coady played some great
pitch and putt to beat a fancied Fermoy panel into 2nd on a score of
220 to Fermoys 224.Under Johan Brosnan’s stewardship the boys have
started the year in great fashion and hopefully further honours will
follow in the individual tournaments later in the year. Well done
lads!
The scratch cup season took our players to the Majestic course in
Mallow on Easter Saturday where Paudie O’ Sullivan won the 36 hole
prize with a terrific score of -15, brother Gary won the final 18 with
a score of -8.Both players are in great form heading into the 2nd
Irish open at the R.G.S.C. course in Dublin next weekend. On Easter
Monday the lads travelled in force to Tipperary Hills, in what can
only be described as gale force conditions Anthony O’ Loughlin lead
the way after 36 holes on -12 with Colin Sheehan also making the cut.
Unfortunately the playoff didn’t go according to plan  for Anthony who
shot +3 for the front 9 but fought back to finish on -13 and a tie for
3rd place. Colin missed out on a prize by just one shot after carding
a superb round of -4. With our players in contention each week its
only a matter of time before a break through is made and one must have
confidence that top honours will soon be making their way to the club.
Our greens were hollow-tined last weekend with members both young and
old coming out in force to lend a hand. All the help was greatly
appreciated, there were some sore limbs after all the brushing but the
benefit will be seen for the season ahead. The course will re-open on
Saturday 17th April when Martin Keohane begins the defence of the Club
Matchplay Championship which is kindly sponsored by ’Farrells Bar,
Summerfield’. Any players who wish to take part in this terrific
competition should give their names to any member of the committee
before Saturdays draw. This year we will revert back to the old format
of each round being played over one week with each round consisting of
36 holes
Best of luck to Martin Keohane, Anthony O’ Loughlin, Gary O’ Sullivan
and Paudie O’ Sullivan who will atempt to qualify for the Cork
Matchplay in Rosscarberry this Sunday and also to our scramble team of
Don Sheehan, Colin Sheehan and Johan Brosnan who will also be in

Claycastle Pitch and Putt Report 28/3/10

Scratch Cup 2010
The Claycastle scratch cup was played for on Sunday 28th March. This
was the eight year of our hugely popular scratch cup with top players
from all over Munster taking part. With the course in immaculate
condition the scoring was excellent and after 36 holes Paul O’ Brien
(Templemore) lead the field on 12 under par. James Cleary (Clonmel)
-9, John Walsh (Collins) -9, Ray Murphy (Templebreedy)-8, Colin
Sheehan, Gary O’ Sullivan (Both Claycastle) -7 were all in contention
heading in to the final 18. Ray Murphy has struggled around Claycastle
in recent years but he proved he can master any course by shooting -9
for the final 18 to finish on 17 under par. Ray’s round started
quietly by his own high standards by paring the first 6 holes, on the
7th the machine clicked into gear and he went on to birdie 9 of the
next 10 holes to blow away the field. People have run out of
superlatives to describe Ray in recent years and it isn’t any wonder
after seeing him in devastating form at first hand. Paul O’ Brien
played superbly for his first visit to Claycastle and finished in
second place on 15 under par. In third place was James Cleary on 14
under par. Special mention must go to one of our young guns Johan
Brosnan who played superbly to win the final 18 in a field that
included 4 present Irish Internationals.
The club would like to thank the 90 players that took part and made
the day such a great success, looking forward to seeing ye all again
next year.

County Leagues
The senior teams quest for a final spot ended in vain at the hands of
a vastly experienced Templebreedy team at St.Annes on Sunday 21st
March. The team entered the semis with high hopes after topping their
group with a fantastic record of won 4 drew 1 lost 0.On the day they
came up against a truly inspired Temple outfit who have been here and
done it no less than 16 years in a row. With wins in the foursomes for
Martin Keohane/Ed Long and Gary O’ Sullivan/Colin Sheehan the lads
lead 2-1 with Anthony O’ Loughlin/Paudie O’ Sullivan losing to Ray
Murphy/Richard O’ Flaherty. Temple’s success over the years has been
based on solid singles performances and they duly delivered in
devastating fashion by whitewashing Claycastle 6-0,running out 7-2
winners overall. Although the defeat was hard to swallow the team can
take great heart from reaching the last four  at the first attempt and
hopefully bounce back next year to go a couple of steps further. Very
best of luck to Templebreedy who now face St.Annes in the final.

Congratulations to the O’ Sullivan brothers Paudie and Gary on
qualifying for the Irish open which will be played in RGSC in late
April. Best of luck lads!

Work will commence on the greens next Saturday and all help will be
greatly appreciated. Remember, you don’t have to be on the committee
to lend a hand!

will having a playing interest in the fiercely contested county

Claycastle Pitch and Putt Club-A review of the year-
It was an extremely successful year on the playing front for the
members of Claycastle, with the highlight being Ed Longs’
participation in the Gents National Matchplay in Castletown Co. Meath
over the June bank holiday weekend. Ed qualified out of a tough
section in Crosshaven which included one Thomas Lynch who is one of
the hottest prospects in pitch and putt at the moment. Ed not only
became the first Claycastle player to qualify for this prestigious
event but also went on to reach the last 32 where he narrowly lost his
closely fought game. Claycastle were also represented at the Gents
National Strokeplay in Tralee Co. Kerry in July where Don and Colin
Sheehan competed in the in the intermediate section and Anthony O’
Loughlin competed in the seniors. Colin came agonisingly close to
claiming his and Claycastle’s first national title when he finished
runner-up to Mallow man Trevor O’ Donovan, It was a great day for the
Sheehan family as Colin’s dad Don qualified for the final 18 where he
put in a solid performance. In the seniors Anthony finished in 15th
place, but for some poor pitching could have finished much higher. All
in all it was a terrific effort by the Claycastle lads at national
level and hopefully 2010 will see a national title finding its way to
Youghal. At provincial level Martin Keohane qualified for the Munster
Matchplay in Castleisland Co. Kerry where he was drawn against
defending and National champion Frank Dineen. The draw seemed like a
tough one but Martin dug deep and found the performance of a lifetime
to beat Corks inter-county captain by a margin of 3&2. As so often
happens Martin found it hard to replicate his performance in round two
and narrowly lost to Matchplay specialist Pacelli Darcy form Bruff by
3&2.
In August our juvenile member David Poyntin represented the Cork
juveniles at Munster and National level where Cork made history by
completing a marvellous clean sweep beating fierce rivals Kerry into
second place at both championships. On the open circuit the scramble
team of Joan Hyde, Rita Ryall and Maureen Broderick played superbly to
claim the ladies prize at the Fermoy open scramble. Declan O’ Shea
also played well in Fermoy where he picked up two prizes. In our own
scratch cup in March Anthony O’ Loughlin held off a late charge by the
ever consistent John Walsh (Collins) to win the cup for the second
time. Ed Long continued his fine form throughout the year to win
prizes in Dugarvan and Corkbeg and also made numerous cuts at scratch
cups in the city. At a local level the officers prizes were fiercely
contested throughout the year. In May Adrian Landers retained the
Presidents prizes while Bridie Walsh added another major title to her
collection by winning the Lady captains prize. Ed Long played superbly
to claim the Captains prize while rising star Colin Sheehan won the
Chairman’s prize. In September Ted Healy won the most sought after of
all prizes when he won The Noel O’ Driscoll Perpetual trophy. James O’
Neill won his first major prize when he won the Daisy Swayne memorial
in October. A special mention must go to our captain Martin Keohane
who completed a feat that will surley not be achieved again by winning
both the Club Matchplay and Strokeplay. Martin’s  form peaked at just
the right time during the year and hopefully these victories will give
him the confidence to go on and become the player we all know he can
be.

The officers and committee would like to wish all our members and
their families a happy and safe Christmas and we’ll see ye all again
in 2010.
