Brussels can seem a long way from Co. Cork, but that’s exactly where Irish EU Officials Teresa O’ Driscoll and Michael Hamell will be heading this week. Ms. O’ Driscoll who works for the EU in Alicante will be visiting her former school Pobalscoil na Trionóide in Youghal on Monday the 17th of October.

Mr. Hamell who works for the European Commission in Brussels will visit the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences UCC on Friday the 21st of October.

Ms. O’ Driscoll and Mr. Hamell will be amongst almost 50 Irish people working in EU-Institutions across Europe who will be coming home to visit their old schools and talk to secondary school students about how the EU works and career opportunities available.

“This is the third time Irish EU officials have taken part in the ‘Back-to-School’ activity. It’s clear that Irish people working for the EU are really keen on taking part and letting young people know what is out there for them.”, said Barbara Nolan, Head of the European Commission Representation in Ireland.

Amongst them are officials from the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, the EU Delegation in Sarajevo or the Joint Research Center in Petten. All in all, almost 50 Irish EU officials will be taking part in the “Back to School” activities this year – from translators to scientific researchers and financial managers. They will get the chance to talk to young people at home and hear their views. It’s also a chance to let students know about careers in the EU, the challenge of living and working abroad as well as issues of broader interest such as climate change and the EU’s response to the economic crisis.

Background

The ‘Back to School’ initiative is taking place across the EU. It all started in 2007 when the German officials went ‘back to school’ to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and it proved so popular that it has expanded every year, with more and more people taking part.

The Youghal Pobalscoil na Tríonóide 2010 annual summer graduation ball took place last Friday 5th August. The champagne reception took place at the Farrell’s Summerfield Bar where the students gathered and mixed with their families and friends prior to the big event at the Silversprings Moran Hotel in Cork City.

The glitz and glamour of the ladies (and Gents) who attended the Graduation Ball is the highlight of the Youghal Pobalscoil na Tríonóide student’s social calendar. With over 200 students and their partners a terrific night was assured.

IMPRESSIVE MEETING AS YOUGHAL CONCERNED CITIZENS GROUPS CONTINUES TO  BED IN.

By Christy Parker

THE YOUGHAL CONCERNED CITIZENS GROUP continued to consolidate its position as an active entity and a forum for ‘people power’ at its most recent meeting on Tuesday May 10th. A press release issued by YCC secretary Adrian Hyde suggests that strong commitment and enterprise presided on the night and, more relevantly perhaps, during the period following the previous meeting, during which initiatives and projects had been actively pursed.

Mr Hyde reports that several new faces were in attendance in the Red Store as Mr Michael Butler opened proceedings with an update on the events to support Youghal’s application to participate in TG4’s upcoming 10-part series, The G-Team. The series will see non-Gaeltacht communities compete for a prize pot of €40,000 towards promoting their local area. Cameras will descend on each participating town to record a one-day festival in which every effort is employed to use the Irish language.

In promoting Youghal’s application, Mr. Butler floated such ideas as translating shop windows into Irish, a Speaker’s Corner, incentive schemes for consumers to use Irish while shopping, alongside various other Irish language based events. He said assessors from TG4 would shortly visit Youghal to consider the application. The speaker added that the exposure gained from participating would be very worthwhile and said several local organisations have responded positively to the idea.

Marketing

Mr. Norman McDonald reported that, following a meeting with marketing consultant Tim Magee, several marketing initiatives were being pursued. These included asking owners of vacant buildings for permission to paint curtains and windows on the boarded windows, hence reducing the negative impact of such structures. He said this had been done successfully elsewhere (e.g. the old courthouse.)

Mr. McDonald proceeded that Mr. Cliff Windsor had volunteered to meet and greet visitors from tour buses stopping in Youghal. With up to 35 buses a week passing through the town, he observed, this was a considerable undertaking. Mr. Windsor would conduct his project in fancy dress and distribute flyers and brochures encouraging tourists to make longer return visits than their present schedule might allow. It was hoped that this effort would impact from next year as positive reports of Youghal were returned to the tour companies. It was also agreed to target and market Youghal to tour companies come September for their 2012 schedules. .

Fish pie, Moby Dick and a picnic

Mr McDonald also revealed that a fish pie competition would take place in the coming weeks, whereby Youghal restaurants would compete for the credit and honour of creating the original, de-facto ‘Youghal Bay Fish Pie’. The winning recipe could be used by all Youghal eateries in Youghal –and beyond if so desired. The use of ‘Youghal’ in the title was a marketing notch in itself, it was noted. Asked whether the contest could be open to members of the public also, Mr McDonald replied that it was more important to move the idea forward now.to avoid missing another tourist season trying to organise something bigger.

A mackerel festival to coincide with the mackerel season was tentatively being planned, with updates in due course. A fish of a bigger fry was the centre-point for a suggestion to strengthen the town’s links with Moby Dick. The proposal was to promote association with the book’s author Hermen Melville, perhaps through erecting a statue or basing a festival on his name. It was felt that the concept would resonate well with Americans, given that their country rates the author very highly.

There was much approval for an idea by Paula Tutty of Tweenies to conduct a Teddy Bear picnic for parents and children in the Green Park. Ms Tuttle volunteered to advance the idea and was assured of assistance from the group. The meeting also heard that the prospect of Youghal Lace being displayed in local shops is progressing well. Further details are expected shortly.

Beaches

Mr. Eoin Budds of the sub-committee seaside working group (also comprising Mr. Ted Murphy) made a detailed presentation, complete with pictures and slides, on the negatives and positives of the beach and seaside areas. The presentation’s key points included a shortfall of facilities at the beaches, the lack of connect between the town and beach and the need for much better marketing to visitors.

Three ideas proposed can be categorised as follows: i) prepare a proposal for submission to Youghal Town Council detailing desirable facilities, such as showers, adequate toilets, information points and locations/stalls for traders (which, it was felt, would also bring in revenue to the council.); ii) conduct an advertising campaign to promote Youghal beach and iii) organise a trade-show to promote Youghal to invited investors and business representatives, in which Youghal’s history and heritage past would be highlighted, alongside a presentation on opportunities available in the town, (e.g. a cinema, beach opportunities, etc.) The overriding agenda was to stress that Youghal, its council and people, were eager and open for new businesses and investment. The report was well received and it was agreed to consider its recommendations prior to further consideration at the next meeting

Railway station, sandbags and quayside rubbish

Adrian Hyde provided an update on a proposed clean-up of the railway station. He said Iarnrod Eireann had approved in principal a proposal for volunteers to undertake cleaning the site. Insurance issues remained to be resolved, he explained, adding that Youghal Town Council was also working on the issue and it would be raised at an upcoming meeting between YCC and the town clerk.

Gratitude was expressed to Youghal Town Council for the removal of unsightly sandbags from the street, as had been discussed at the previous meeting. It was recalled that YCC volunteers had undertaken an extensive clean-up of the Buttimer’s Quay area but much remained to be done. The meeting was told that trailer loads of rubbish could be removed from the quayside but the cost exceeded he fledgling group’s resources. It was agreed to seek the town council’s assistance and again the issue would be raised at the forthcoming meeting.

Any Other Business

The derelict appearance of the Green Park bandstand and the strand toilets was raised. Mr Hyde said paint was available for voluntary activities like this but the permission of the council was required before the group could tackle public buildings. Garda Peter Queally raised the issue of transition year students carrying out such tasks. He was meeting with over a hundred students the following day with a view to them undertaking voluntary activities. It was suggested that flower planting in Green Park might occupy the students and cleaning signs around the town and helping with the clean-up of the harbour was also mooted.

Finally, it was recommended that a road-side sign be erected on the Dungarvan-side approach to Youghal to inform motorists -such as those travelling from the Rosslare Ferry- that Youghal was the last beach and coastal resort until West Cork. The feeling was that, in the course of a long journey, tourists might be inclined to stop over in Youghal if they realised it was the last beach and resort for another hundred miles.

On Tuesday the 24th of May, the Pobalscoil na Tríonóide School credit union held their summer saving bonanza. Each saver on the day relieved a prize. This promotion was very successful and there was a great turnout. There was also a saver of the year prize which was awarded to Edward O’ Regan. Edward has been a consistent saver with the school credit union all year. This was the last day of the school credit union for the year 2010/2011, and for it’s team members Luke McCarthy, Sorcha Keniry, Becky Fitzgerald, Nicole Hehir and Kelly O’ Sullivan. The school credit union has been a success during the year, and it’s team members would like to thank each person who saved with them during the year.

The Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation provides direct funding to families of children with brain damage who suffer severe intellectual and physical developmental delay, and funding is always needed.

For most of us, the words Jack and Jill bring to mind the old nursery rhyme ‘Jack and Jill went up the hill’ but 19 year old Danielle Keniry of Youghal brings this to another level, as she intends going much higher than a hill to undertake a tandem Skydive in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation. Daughter of Annmarie and Martin Keniry, Danielle is also a 6th year student in Pobalscoil na Tríonóide.

Asked why Danielle decided on such a dare devil fundraising event, she smiled as she told The East Cork Journal that she ‘loves the adrenalin rush, and wanted to do something that she would always remember’ for a deserving charity. Danielle chose the Jack and Jill Foundation because she worked with a family during last summer whose child suffered severe brain damage. The praise, thanks and admiration which that family showed for the wonderful help they received from the Jack and Jill Foundation impressed Danielle tremendously and she wanted to help in any way she could.

Not one to let the grass grow under her feet, Danielle sourced various activities and eventually decided on the Tandem Skydive. The nearest centre to Youghal is in Kilkenny, and she immediately made contact with them and set the entire fundraiser in motion.
Somebody once said that ‘only Skydivers know why the birds sing’. Last Saturday morning (April 30th 2011) Danielle Keniry traveled with her parents to Kilkenny where, at 9.30am, she made that leap of faith, where she surely hear the birds sing for Jack and Jill.

MARKETING, PROMOTION AND COHESION AMONGST PRIME ISSUES AT YOUGHAL CONCERNED CITIZENS MEETING. – By Christy Parker

Dozens of tour buses arriving in Youghal per week on the Rosslare to Cork/Killarney route make reference to Moby Dick as the only point of interest in Youghal, the most recent meeting of the Youghal Concerned Citizens group was told. Mr. Norman MacDonald, who is conducting research on the issue, also revealed that tens of tour operators on the same route bypass the town entirely throughout the summer.

Other issues to be aired at the meeting include a commitment to enter Youghal in a TG4 event for a €40,000 marketing award and a determination to bring cohesion to promotional events amongst the town’s diverse organisations.

The meeting, at the Red Store on Tuesday April 19th attracted a 20 plus attendance. With organisation and procedure becoming more fine-tuned by the meeting, the gathering processed the pre-set agenda with increased efficiency and purpose. Apologies were conveyed on behalf of PRO Noreen Hurley who was unable to attend due to minor personal circumstances.

The order of business ran as follows:

Opening address by Chairman Jimmy Flanagan:

Mr. Flanagan asked committee member Micheal De Buitleir for an update on a proposed parking a questionnaire to be conducted through Pobalscoil na Trionoide transition year. Mr De Buitleir said the school’s preference was to undertake the project in September. The Comhaltas Craobh Eochail chairman also informed that the group had missed the most recent “window opportunity” to contribute to the County Development Plan but that they would be consulted when the next seeking public submissions process arose. Planning and signage issues would feature on such agenda, he added.

Election of Treasurer:

Mr Flanagan said that the group would incur general running costs and responsibility for handling such finances was needed. It was agreed that donations (as against subscriptions) would be sought alongside a €2 contribution per member per meeting. The post of treasurer will be filled temporarily by group secretary Adrian Hyde. It was noted that one well-wisher had contributed €100 at the previous meeting.

Youghal's famous beach

Youghal's famous beach

Formation of a working group to examine issues relating to seaside development in Youghal and to formulate proposals for same:

Mr Flanagan successfully sought volunteers to investigate what needs attention in this area, whether it involve beach cleaning or more advanced projects. A Mr. Eoin Budds, from the floor, advocated efforts to develop the beach and river facilities as per other resorts, suggesting kayaking and festival-orientated beach activities as examples by which to maximise and market the natural beach resort. He undertook to compile a report for the next meeting.

Formation of a working group to formulate proposals for a central message or hook upon which the town can market itself:

The chairman recalled marketing manager Tim Magee’s impressive address at the previous meeting in which he stressed that while industry was welcome, Youghal’s focus should be on sustainable development of its natural amenities and local enterprises. It was conveyed from the attendance that Mr. Magee, despite his frequent business sojourns abroad, remains very willing to contribute to the group in whatever capacity is viable for him to do so.

Marketing catastrophe

Norman MacDonald diverted the discussion a little when he revealed that up to 35 bus tour companies operate on the Rosslare to Cork/Killarney throughout the summer and beyond. In an example of marketing deficiency, one of these, Seaways, conducts 47 seven-day and 25 ten-day tours through Youghal, amounting to one per week of each through Youghal. However the only point of interest they referred to in Youghal was Moby Dick, explained Mr. MacDonald.  He further revealed that many of the tour companies bypass the town entirely. He is now compiling details of as many companies as possible to quantify the dearth and potential of marketing within this sector.

Notwithstanding the good service it provided, through the pub of the same name, Mr. MacDonald felt strongly that Youghal had a lot more to offer besides the legacy of a dead whale to entice bus passengers to alight and to amble. There were many “treasures,” such as St. Mary’s Church, with walls dating from 600 AD, the River Blackwater and even murderous, marauding Cromwell if need be! He wondered of Comhaltas performers could greet arrivals, or if they might be induced to linger by older volunteers greeting them on arrival with pamphlets depicting Youghal’s many attractions.

The meeting also heard that only one of several cafés in the area showed interest in opening earlier in the morning to tempt such travellers. “We’re not being rude but we’re not being welcoming either,” surmised Mr MacDonald ruefully, adding. “You could show someone Youghal for a whole day and they’d still not see half of it!”

Mr. MacDonald then revealed that plans to acquire a unique model railway attraction from Dublin had been derailed as the owners had apparently opted to send it to a museum in Dun Laoghaire instead. A watchful eye would be maintained lest it became available nonetheless.

TG4

Micheal de Buitleir brought news that TG4 are launching a competitive ‘G-day’ event in which non-Gaeltacht towns will compete against each other to stage the best 24 hour Irish language and heritage festival. The contest carries a first prize of €40,000 towards marketing their area. “Even without winning, the competition gets you a lot of valuable television coverage,” he argued. It was agreed that Youghal would participate.

Cohesion, co-operation, clearing and Gavin

Mr De Buitleir proceeded that Youghal clubs and organisation had traditionally marketed themselves individually, whereas a joint and cohesive strategy would likely serve the town better. He also referred to ‘Painting Your Grey Area,’ a new promotion being run by Dulux in which the company will provide free paint for use on derelict public buildings.

Committee member Lil Danne remarked that several areas surrounding the beach and quays needed sprucing up and cleaning. She suggested that pointers might be garnered from viewing a Dirty Old Towns, a current television series in which gardener Diarmuid Gavin was applying his craft to improving Charleville. “He asked that they fundraise €30,000 towards the project and the entire town rallied behind it,” she observed.

Mr, De Buitleir reported that Comhalts Ceoltori Eireann had cleaned from the water tower to Magner’s Hill a week previous and said the town council were receptive to such voluntary ‘public realm’ initiatives. He urged that other groups consider similar projects. There subsequently emerged some discussion on the prevalence of unsightly sandbags in the town and it was agreed to remove them in a week’s time if they remained visible.

An unexpected revelation arose from Mr Flanagan when he produced a copy of the previous Saturday’s Irish Daily Mirror. It carried a feature on Youghal but, in stark contrast to the earlier Irish Times equivalent, it depicted a town laden with attractions and natural beauty. “It’s absolutely fantastic,” remarked the chairman.

Formation of a working to investigate the feasibility of implementing a strategy across all groups and organisations in regard to co-ordinating activities and events:

It was agreed that individual organisations were doing well in their efforts to promote the town from individual perspectives but that too often efforts clashed with those of other organisations, to the detriment of all parties and of the town.  It was recognised that the absence of representatives from local organisations at Youghal Concerned Citizens meetings did not facilitate improvement in this sphere. The meeting agreed to contact as many organisations and clubs as possible with a view to acquiring their views on the issue. A suggestion was made also that efforts be made to publish a calendar of events in the local media some weeks in advance to help avoid a clash between meetings, events, etc.

Youghal Lace

A spokeswoman representative Youghal Lace revealed that the group is planning to re-convene in the coming weeks. She said much plans for the future included tutoring interested parties in the art of producing the unique lacework. As regards exhibiting past creations, she was not in a position as yet to declare or elaborate on that.

As the meeting neared conclusion, there was consensus to ask the town council in writing for an update on the proposed restoration project for the Clock Gate, which was predicted to commence this month.

The final item concerned the old railway station. Two people in attendance expressed a willingness voluntarily to clean up the site. They were told that the town council has contacted the site owners, Iarnrod Eireann and were awaiting a response on a request to render it less unsavoury looking. Meanwhile the volunteers were advised to contact the company with any proposals.

Reports and progress on all the above issues will be processed at the next meeting of the Youghal Concerned Citizens’ss next meeting on Tuesday May 10th at 7 pm in the Red Store.

The Youghal Pobalscoil na Tríonóide 2010 annual summer graduation ball took place at the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on Friday. (6th August 2010). Report / Photo: Michael Hussey & Miguél N. White www.youghalonline.com Email: news@youghalonline.com

The champagne reception took place at the Youghal GAA centre, Club Arás, where the students gathered and mixed with their families and friends prior to the big event at the Rochestown Park Hotel.

The event was super stylish, the ‘fashionistas’ were out inforce and would give Carrie and the gals a run for their money!! Formal gowns, Maxi Dresses, were the order of the day. Bling Bling were a girls best friend and a girls right to SHOES!!! And Jimmy Choos at that. The theme was accessories- accessories- accessories – and handbags – lots of them! “Veni, Vidi, Gucci”…… Go figure!

The ladies looked stunning and the men scrubbed up pretty darn well in their tuxedos! At last, here was the 2010 Graduation Ball where Youghal’s fashion forward were allowed to shine.

The glitz and glamour of the ladies (and Gents) who attended the Graduation Ball is the highlight of the Youghal Pobalscoil na Tríonóide student’s social calendar. With over 260 students and their partners a terrific night was assured.

After mixing with friends and family, out came the cameras before the Graduation class made their way in style to Rochestown Park Hotel, many of the students having rented limousines and classic cars for the journey.

The night kicked off with a fabulous meal and it is true to say that the students had a great night of socialising and dancing to the rocking sounds of local group,”Clockworks” . Another great night of music, mingling and memories and a night to be forever remembered by the students.

The organising committee must be congratulated on such a successful night and YoughalOnline.com would like to wish all the Leaving Certificate students the best of luck with their results which will be announced shortly.
