Meade and Moynihan in the 2.4 Escort, Great Stuff.!!!!!!

Barry Meade and Liam Moynihan in the powerfull Escort Mk2 proved unbeatable in the Great Stuff Imokilly Single Stage based at the Midleton Park Hotel on Saturday the 28th of July. Barry saying it was the perfect rally. Second was the GpN Subaru of Colm Murphy / Don Montgomery while third went the new pairing of Owen Murphy / Sean Mullally.

On the first run over the 20km stage out of Cloyne it was Barry Meade / Liam Moynihan who stopped the clocks with a time of 9.43. 8 Barry said he was happy with his time and said as they came on a stricken Roy White he pulled in fast and they lost no time, next on the case was Colm Murphy / Don Montgomery in the Subaru the boys set a time of 9.50.7 to slot into second not happy to commit 100% with the notes, Owen Murphy / Sean Mullally slotting into third the first outing for the pair and Owen back on the Tar after 2 years in the wood.

Fergus O Meara was hot on Murphy’s heels in his Escort. The battle further back was white hot between Eddie Power in the Corolla WRC from Ed Murphy, Frank Kelly and Tom Flaherty all in Escorts then came the first of the IMC lads Allen Treacy / Bob Fitzgerald who were balked on the stage by a slower car and not overly impressed .Next was Youghal’s Jason Ryan who said my Honda Civic just does not have the top end speed but we are happy enough.Midleton ace Darragh O’ Riordan / Sean McCarthy were in the wars with 2 punctures on the first stage in the Clio and the time loss could never be made up.

Stage 2 and the sun was still splitting the stones in east Cork Barry Meade kept up the pressure and was once again fastest this time taking 3 seconds out of Colm Murphy to have a ten second lead after 2 runs. Murphy in the Gp N Subaru going hard reporting no problems ,Fergus O Meara pushed into third to make it 2 Escorts in the top 3 followed by Owen Murphy who was liking the stage and happy out in the Hankook Evo 9. Rest of the top 10 remained much the same and Allen Treacy / Bob Fitzgerald kept the pressure on to be top IMC crew after two stages but lost a little time with gear linkage trouble being stuck in 3rd gear for a few kilometres at the end of the stage.

Stage 3 it had rained as stage 2 was finishing this would make the last stage very interesting it was an absolute down pour but the sun came out after a few minutes and the road was drying quickly at least where the sun was hitting the road.

Tyres would be the big problem would it be wet or dry, first into the unknown was rally leader Barry Meade with intermediates at the front and slicks at the back. 10 seconds of a lead gave a slight cushion he could not make a mistake but might not have to push at 100% a wise move saw Barry post a time 5.4 seconds slower than Colm Murphy who said we gave it a bit of a go in the last one but the middle part of the stage was very wet fastest time there was a good run for us .

Owen Murphy had a good run on the last Stage with a second fastest time for third overall and was very happy with his last run on the damp changeable conditions; it was a good day in the Hankook Evo 9 he said.

O’Meara slipped back with a spin but did his Southern 4 Championship a power of good and came 4th overall next up came Ed Murphy , Eddie Power , Frank Kelly, Tom Flaherty,

And then the fastest of the IMC crews Allen Treacy / Bob Fitzgerald a super 9th overall and really happy with their day and the event. Rounding out the top 10 and a class win for Youghal’s Jason Ryan / Tadgh O’ Sullivan in the Civic who said a great rally just too fast for the Civic.

Barry Meade said at the finish ramp a perfect rally in every way Liam was spot on with the notes the car handled a dream no spin or stall and the stage suited my car. We gave it our all great to see the Single Stage back and a great event by the IMC today.

Colm Murphy also had a great day out and said it was a good event.

Owen Murphy said great day out in the Hankook Mitsubishi Evo 9 very happy with second fastest on the last stage great day with Sean Mullally, well done to all the lads at the IMC for putting on a great event.

First local IMC crew home the Killeagh pair Allen Treacy / Bob Fitzgerald a super 9th overall and really happy with their day and the event, the lads said thanks to their fellow club members for staging a great event.

7th overall Frank Kelly/Mossie O’Connell in the Escort Mossie from Lisgoold won the prize spin in an IMC draw before the event, he described it as the drive of his life.

11th Darragh O’ Riordan / Sean McCarthy after early puncture problems.

“Paudi showed true grit and determination to land the top prize, when the Youghal CC had their first open promotion in 18 years”.

IT was billed as Youghal cycling clubs summer criterium but the current summer deluge that we have been having played its part again. A depleted field of 17 riders put their names to the sign on sheet willing to brave the elements on a fast tight technical course.

Racing for category 4 riders was cancelled due to safety reasons and right up the last minute the category 1,2 and 3 race was in the balance. With a slight improvement in the weather, race commissionaire Eddie Keogh gave the green light for riders to take to the line. From the off Paudi O Brien(Dan Morrissey/Speedy Spokes) put the hammer down and gave a masterclass in bike handling skills on the wet circuit. Gaps opened up quickly on the tight course with Robin Kelly(Waterford racing Club) and Aidan Crowley (Did Dunboyne) setting about closing the gap on the Banteer man. Riders created a great spectacle for the crowds gathered lapping the 700 meter course every minute or so. Spills and thrills were at a minium with the riders showing their bike craft at its finest. O brien soloed to a great victory with Robin Kelly and Aidan Crowley taking second and third respectively.

The club were happy in getting the race up and running after its 18 year lapse, despite the conditions and are looking forward to next years sun soaked event.

Results:

1. Paudi O Brien (Dan Morrissey/Speedy Spokes)
2.Robin Kelly (Waterford Racing Club)
3.Aidan Crowley (DiD Dunboyne)
4.Stephen Butler (Visit Nenagh)
5.Brian Canty (Cork County CC)
6.Mike Butler (Visit Nenagh)

“I thought after that length of time that the man above could have smiled on us. By all accounts everybody around the country was in the same boat. The main thing to come out of the promotion, was the consensus that Youghal is an ideal location for a crit event. I must say the club members did an excellent job and thanks also goes to all who helped in the promotion, particularly the Gardai. Next year, I’ll put in a call to the man above for conditions that would suit all,” – Anthony Kenneally.

The Tenth Youghal Triathlon was a tremendous success at the East Cork seaside town, with 248 competitors taking to the Atlantic Ocean, then on to the bicycles then finishing with a run. Report: Derek Kiely

There was over €3,000 in prizes, split amongst the field, with overall prizes as well as category awards too. The course was a massive 750m swim, 19k cycle and a 6.5k run and conditions were tough early Saturday morning with a rising tide and a sharp swell in the Atlantic Ocean for the 750m swim, but as the day drew on weather conditions improved significantly and the roads were dry for both the cycling and the run.

‘Youghal Triathlon Director’ Tommy Roche said “The day was a fantastic success and it is great when everything comes together and that is down to hard work from everyone involved in this event. The standard again this year was absolutely brilliant with a great range of athletes involved. It’s great to see a lot of local Cork athletes competing well at the top end of Triathlon competitions and I want to thank everyone who helped in making this Triathlon a success, the eleventh Youghal Triathlon can’t come quick enough”.

As the competition reached fever pitch it was Trevor Woods, a physical exercise teacher at UCC who emerged as the first man home and overall winner in a time of 1.05.15. Trevor originally from Belfast was thrilled with the victory and praised the organisers for putting together such a well designed course. The first Lady home was Cork’s Elizabeth Lee who won the Youghal Triathlon in 2008. Elizabeth crossed the finish line in 1.10.21 which was a very impressive time indeed.

Other competitors of note were Cork’s Chris Mintern who at just 16 years of age has already competed at International level. Mintern was first out of the water, first home in the cycle, but was caught in the run by the experiences Trevor Woods, also Donal Mahon also put in a fantastic performance claiming third place.

In the Ladies race, there was a bit of local flavour as Katie Cooke who is a niece of well known Youghal man Ken Brookes finished second and Catherine Brown was third and Leevale from Cork took first prize in the team event. The Youghal Triathlon was supported by Youghal Town Council and the Mayor Mary Linehan-Foley was full of high praise for the organisers and the competitors alike, stating that events like these are highly important for Youghal as a town and also sponsored by
the Aura Leisure Centre at Youghal’s swimming pool in the Front Strand.

Our Maritime Weekend actually kicks off on Saturday (Aug 28) as Aquatrek host the Munster Final of the ‘ISA Yachtsman Euromarine Rib Challenge’ on the quays in Youghal. Photo: Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com

If you’re part of an ISA club or training centre you should get a team together and enter. There are 2 classes – Junior and Senior. More details can be found by clicking here, or by phoning our very own John Innes on 086 859 3482.

And it’s not all about power this weekend (well, mostly it is!). We’re having a Commodore’s Cup Sailing Regatta also on Saturday afternoon. Sailors from Youghal and Inniscarra will compete on the water, and try not to get mowed down by wayward competitors in the Rib Challenge.

Youghal Harbour comes alive this Sunday when the only round of the ISA National Powerboat Championships to be held in Cork this year rolls into town and down the slipway. This will be the penultimate round of this year’s series and with points tight at the top of each class, competitive racing is guaranteed. The organisers of this round – Youghal Bay Boat Club – have been working hard to design courses that will ensure tight exciting racing with the whole event happening right in front of Youghal quays. Padraig Brooks -  Commodore of Youghal Bay Boat Club tells us “This is the first time our new club has held powerboat racing here in Youghal. We hosted a round of the Championships across in Ardmore back in July which proved to be an enormous success with huge crowds and fantastic racing and now we look forward to welcoming the racing fleets and spectators to the waters of Youghal for what’s expected to be a memorable round of the championship. The layout of the quays allows for great viewing and we hope people will come down and enjoy the racing”.

Four classes are expected to race this Sunday – 29th August: The F2 & F4 classes look light waterborne jet fighters and can attain speeds approaching 200 kilometres an hour, the T850 fleet are an exciting monohull class, while the P750 class (better known as Thundercats) will make a welcome return to these waters following a highly successful international race back in 2008. Expect lots of noise, tons of excitement and a great spectacle for a wonderful family afternoon.

This is another exciting event for the recently formed Youghal Bay Boat Club. At the start of the Summer large crowds turned out to enjoy their Open Day which was followed closely by ‘WindQuest’ – an inter-club sailing competition – and then a competitive sea-angling competition in July. Given the natural amenities in the area it’s perhaps little surprise that a club in this East Cork town should have proved so active.

Racing on Sunday begins at 12.30 and continues throughout the afternoon with several races in each class. Music and commentary on the day will be provided by Community Radio Youghal and the centre of the action will be Nealon’s Quay (next to ‘The Quays’ bar).

We’re delighted to be able to confirm some more details about the Maritime Weekend that’s taking place in Youghal this Saturday and Sunday (August 28th & 29th). Photo: Michael Hussey www.youghalonline.com Email: news@youghalonline.com

Gerry Humphreys - inset - gives a magnificant aerobatics display in his Vans RV7 over Youghal harbour. Pic: www.youghalonline.com

The first ‘biggie’ is an aerobatics display that will be flown by Gerry Humphreys in his Vans RV7 at 3.30pm on Saturday afternoon. This is the first time such a display has been flown in the skies over East Cork so we’re expecting it to be truly memorable. Youghal is a great location for such a display so people are advised to get along quayside to watch the excitement. Further details on this are available here on our website:

We’re a young club (less than a year old) and there’s only so much we can do with our reach. This weekend is a continuation of the events we’ve already delivered this year and a taster of what we hope to bring in the future, so we humbly ask that you assist our endeavors by helping to spread the word.
