The next film at the Mall Arts Centre is on 8th November at 7.30PM and it is “Stella Days” by Thaddeus O’ Sullivan. It stars Martin Sheen and Stephen Rea.

Daniel Barry, parish priest of Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary, feels like the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time. Although he works hard to fulfil his duty, he has nothing in common with his parishioners and secretly fears he has lost his vocation.

When forced by his Bishop to start a big fund-raising campaign, he attempts to reconcile his passion for film with his duty to the Church through the creation of the Stella Cinema.

But he faces plenty of opposition: from the Bishop and a number of influential parishioners who see film as a source of moral corruption; from locals; and ultimately from his own crisis of conscience.

Stella Days is the story of the conflict between love and duty, hope and faith, and between the excitement of the unknown and the security of the familiar. It encapsulates the dilemma of Ireland in the mid-1950s – on the cusp of the modern but still clinging to the traditions of Church and a cultural identity forged in very different times. – Galway Film Fleadh

Brendan Grace will be performing in The Mall Arts Centre, Youghal on 16th October 2012

The greatest family comedian of our generation proudly presents 40 years in the Comedy business and most of this time at the very top of his profession. Brendan’s new show features some brand new material and some ‘Old Favourites’ from his vast repertoire over the last 40 years including all time favourite parodies ‘FATHER OF THE BRIDE’ and ‘CHINESE TAKEAWAY’. His sense of timing and ability to read an audience is without equal.A brilliant character actor, his ‘Bottler’ character is legendary and is now featured at every performance.

Apart from his obvious ‘star quality’ in all aspects of his performance Brendan’s drawing power is enormous and the ‘House Full’ sign is the norm rather than the exception at his concerts.

Nowadays Brendan spends a considerable amount of time in Florida where he resides with his family.Despite this he still plays the Irish Theatre Circuit and major hotel venues and in fact still considers Ireland his first love. The genial Dubliner has a very special bond with Irish audiences and is much loved by young and old not least because he gives very generously of his time after each Concert. The ’Meet and Greet’ is now very much part and parcel of each show and
Brendan’s very down to earth approach is much appreciated by all.

In more recent times Brendan has managed to attract a younger audience mainly because the content of his show is very ‘Family’ and also because of his hilarious appearance in Father Ted when he played the part of a drinking. smoking, troublemaker extraordinaire Father Fintan Stack.

Brendan Grace will be performing in The Mall Arts Centre, Youghal on 16th October 2012 at 8 pm.Ticket price €30.00.

As always and especially nowadays it is advisable to secure your Brendan Grace ticket when he appears in your area.

As this is the Cine Club’s very first season of films, organisers, Yew Wood Venues have worked closely with ‘Access Cinema Club’ (the resource organisation for regional cultural cinema in Ireland) who together agreed to curate the programme for the first season. The Club will continue a long tradition of interest in cinema in Youghal.

Youghal Cine Club Co-ordinator Sinead Goggin said: “We believe we have compiled a listing that will develop our members interest in cultural cinema, and who knows, members might even get to try something a little bit different from what they may normally consider viewing! Season two of films will of course be chosen by the members of Youghal Cine Club.”
The programme sees all English language titles, with films having a broad appeal. However, included in the line-up is one documentary ‘Buck’ and one slightly more challenging title ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ – an excellent thriller about a girl who flees a cult.

Officially launching the club, Mayor of Youghal, Cllr Michelle Hennessy, welcomed the initiative which continues a long tradition of interest in cinema in Youghal, and which truly brought a traditional cinematic feel to the unique venue.  “Youghal is synonymous with the making of the internationally successful film Moby Dick, making the Youghal Cine Club a fitting initiative within the local community.” Said the Mayor.  Special guest on the night was Michael Roche, who worked for 74 years in the Regal Cinema which finally closed its doors in August of 2010.  Adding to the overall experience on the night was the newly purchased High Definition data projection dvd system and screen, also supported by Cork County Council.

Events Manager for ‘Yew Wood Venues’, Clodagh Mahon spoke at the launch about how the club would be rolled out: “In a nutshell, this cine-club, and the choice of films screened will be driven by its members, which is what makes cine-clubs so special.  It is our intention to ideally run films every fortnight.  We hope to make this an all-inclusive club, for members of all ages, possibly also running a Saturday morning screening for kids, and to also come up with a series of films to suit and appeal to our teenagers.

It is intended that after each screening the members would intend to have a group discussion on the film shown on the night, and agree on a series of films for the season ahead.  Clodagh went on to explain what fees would be incurred: “Membership to the club will be free, with entrance to the films at €5 each.  As we become more established, we will look at running ‘themed nights’ – eg: ‘Italian movie night’ with pizza and chianti!, said Clodagh.

Membership is limited and is through registration only.   To become a member, contact Yew Wood Venues, Enterprise Youghal on: 024-81823, email themallartscentre@gmail.com  or log onto the facebook page www.facebook.com/youghalcineclub.

‘Yew Wood Venues’ – Youghal’s Premier Venues is proud to launch the newly formed ‘Youghal Cine Club’, in The Mall Arts Centre, Youghal on Thursday 28th June 2012 at 7.30 pm with a screening of Oscar winning film, ‘The Artist’.

The Club will continue a long tradition of interest in cinema in Youghal, and will form part of   ‘Access Cine Club’ which is the resource organisation for regional cultural cinema in Ireland. Speaking in advance of the launch, Events Manager, Clodagh Mahon commented: “This is a wonderful opportunity for us in Yew Wood Venues to bring cinema back to the people of Youghal once more.  We have planned a season of monthly screenings of feature films, and the beauty of the club is that the choice of film will be driven by the members.   Membership is free with a charge of €5 per show.”  Said Clodagh.

Although a recently produced film, the launch film, ‘The Artist’ encompasses modern technology with the classic black and white film genre. The film is a silent movie, screened in black and white and projected in the old-fashioned boxy Academy ratio, with its occasional lines of dialogue printed on intertitle cards. It falls into the long tradition of movies about the movies, and centres on an established film star and a beguiling young actress in late Twenties and early Thirties Hollywood, during the rise of the talkies.

Youghal Cine Club hopes to encourage those with a love for cinematic art to become active members.  Ian McDonagh, Arts Officer with Cork County Council congratulated Yew Wood Venues for their initiative insisting the venture was a ‘very valuable development for film in County Cork’.  Cork County Council is one of the key supporters of the club.

A full house is expected for the launch night for the screening of the Artist and entry will be through registration in advance only.  To guarantee your seat contact Clodagh at Yew Wood Venues, Enterprise Youghal on: 024-81823, email themallartscentre@gmail.com  or log onto the facebook page www.facebook.com/youghalcineclub.

Declan O’Rourke undertakes a nationwide tour this Summer

After a very memorable and successful series of concerts in 2009 & 2010 to help support Youth music projects ,The Sacred Roots Project based in Youghal are back with the support of Yew wood  Youghal’s Premiere Venues and the Arts Council to welcome the return of the very charismatic Declan O’Rourke to play in the beautiful setting of St Mary’s 12th Century Church Youghal on Friday July 27th as part of his nationwide tour to promote his new album MAG PAI ZAI .

Not that you’d know it from his startling maturity as a songwriter, but 35-year-old Declan O’Rourke was a latecomer to the Dublin singer-songwriter scene. Despite having a keen interest in music and singing from an early age, it was during his teenage years spent in Melbourne that he first got hold of a guitar. O’Rourke was exposed to a different cultural aesthetic at this point which, coupled with his own well-formed cultural identity, may account for his unique style of melody and melancholia.

In 2004, Declan released his debut album, Since Kyabram. He regards the comfortably haunting debut as little more than a collection of songs and an introduction to the different styles he subsequently intended to use. “I was also trying to break the moany singer-songwriter myth – I definitely didn’t want to be put into that category.”

‘Galileo (Someone Like You),’ the debut single from Since Kyabram, has been covered by Josh Groban and performed by Paul Weller. Declan will perform ‘Galileo’ at the opening ceremony of the Solheim Cup 2011.
Such was the critical and commercial success of the album in Ireland that it opened the doors for him internationally, earning him plaudits from the likes of Paul Weller and Jonathan Ross, each of whom were rapturous in their praise of Declan’s deep-honey voice and astute song writing abilities.

His follow-up album in 2007, Big Bad Beautiful World, easily consolidated his appeal in Ireland as well as with his growing list of well-connected champions. Support slots followed in the UK and Europe to the likes of Snow Patrol, Teddy Thompson, The Cardigans, Paulo Nutini, Badly Drawn Boy, Divine Comedy and Paul Weller, and before too long major labels started calling, siren-like, for his signature on the dotted line.
O’Rourke has since been through the major label mill and come out the other side – smiling (eventually!), we’re glad to say.

On his new record label he releases his third album and first independent offering, MAG PAI ZAI, which sees him maturing as a songwriter in ways he would, most likely, have never thought possible.
MAG PAI ZAI, released in April ‘11, managed to top the success of Declan’s first two albums, holding its own in the top 10 for four consecutive weeks. ‘A Little Something,’ the album’s debut single, received much airplay, climbing to the no. 2 spot in the Today FM Top 40. Both singles released to date, ‘A Little Something,’ and ‘Time Machine’ were Single of the Week.

Declan recently performed ‘A Little Something,’ and ‘Galileo’ from his debut album, at the BBC Last Night of the Proms with the Ulster Orchestra in Castle Park, Bangor.
