VETERAN PHOTOGRAPHER BOB ROCK and his family were delighted to present the cheque of 3,000 euros to Trocaire’s Famine Appeal last Thursday (3rd November 2011) at the offices of the Youghal Credit Union. This followed the recent success of his photographic exhibition called ‘The Beauty of Youghal’. Bob was moved to organise the exhibition after seeing news footage of the starving families in Africa. “It is so tragic to see children and parents suffering like that,I felt compelled to do something to help those unfortunate people.”

He paid particular thanks to Barry Treacy and the staff of the Youghal Credit Union who have the important job of collecting the money. Janet Twomey, Munster Regional Development Officer for Trocaire said she was delighted to accept this magnificent donation towards Trocaire’s East Africa Famine Relief and said that Bob also raised awareness of the starving people who need our help so much.

Such was the popularity of “The Beauty of Youghal” photographic exhibition in aid of Trocaire’s Famine Appeal at Youghal Credit Union that many of the high quality images hed to be reordered to satisify the demand for the beautiful landscape photographs of Youghal. Twenty of the exhibits sold out within two hours of the official opening!
Bob spent 50 years involved in photography, for 35 of which he recorded for posterity the happiest events in the lives of his community, including almost 2,000 weddings and “often for two generations of a family.”
Bob has exhibited in Dublin, London and Madrid, won silver and bronze medals from the “Photographic Society of Ireland,” was a finalist in the “Kodak Bride of the Year” and has six of his images in the “Best of Irish Professional Photography” archive. He retired from professional photography a decade ago, since when he has been documenting the Irish landscape. “I needed a break from faces” he jokes. Ironically the gaunt, suffering faces from distant Africa now prompt him to publicise his talents again.

“The Beauty of Youghal” photographic exhibition in aid of Trocaire’s Famine Appeal at Youghal Credit Union by veteran local photographer Bob Rock is drawing to a close this week. The exhibition was a fantastic success and the Rock family are very pleased with the money raised so far for the famine appeal in East Africa. The remaining unsold prints are now reduced in price from 50 to 25 euro. They would make a lovely Christmas present and also help the charity, so why not drop in to your local Youghal Credit Union and place your order.
Most of these images have never been printed before “and as I’m now 76 years old, probably won’t be printed again!,” smiles Bob. “So it’s an opportunity to own something unique.”
The images are mounted to 18”x 24” ready for framing and are printed on acid free paper using Canon’s Chromalife 100 Inks, meaning they can survive for 100 years behind glass. “They are easily removed from the mount for posting abroad, ” adds Bob.

Veteran Photographer Focuses On Youghal To Aid African Famine Victims.
By Christy Parker
A SERIES OF STUNNING LANDSCAPES form a photographic exhibition in aid of Trocaire’s East Africa Famine Relief opening in Youghal Credit Union from Friday next (Sept 16th). ‘A Human Life’ features approximately 60 pictures by local, veteran photographer Bob Rock, who says they “depict the beauty of Youghal as never seen before.”

Several of the photos were taken either at dawn or at dusk and create portrayals of the town’s harbour, beaches and hillsides that blend nature and soul to leave an indelible impression on the viewer’s consciousness. “They are absolutely amazing. I’ve lived here all my life and have never seen photos to represent the town so magnificently,” says Youghal Credit Union manager Barry Treacy.
Most of these images have never been printed before “and as I’m now 76 years old, probably won’t be printed again!,” smiles Bob. “So it’s an opportunity to own something unique.” As an extra incentive, the photographs will retail at about half the normal price.
The images are mounted to 18”x 24” ready for framing and are printed on acid free paper using Canon’s Chromalife 100 Inks, meaning they can survive for 100 years behind glass. “They are easily removed from the mount for posting abroad, ” adds Bob.
Bob was moved to organise the exhibition by news footage of the starving families in Africa. “It is so tragic to see children and parents suffering like that,” he reflects. “I felt compelled to do something to help those unfortunate people.”
Jovial and sincere, Bob spent 50 years involved in photography, for 35 of which he recorded for posterity the happiest events in the lives of his community, including almost 2,000 weddings and “often for two generations of a family.”

Youghal Community bus has extended its Thursday/Friday service to Monday to Saturday. The new schedule begins as a pilot service and will be re-assessed after two months. “Thursdays & Fridays are very popular but we think the need is there for a much broader service,” says Community Bus PRO John Cunningham, announcing the scheme.

The new Community Bus timetable is as follows: Mon-Tuesday-Wednesday: 9.30am-2pm; Thursday: 9.30am-5pm; Friday: 10am-5pm; Saturday: 10am-2pm. Bookings/Calls on (024) 91900 (weekday working hours)
The bus, with wheelchair facility, operates a door-to-door service for those over 60 or anyone who is physically or non-physically incapacitated. Passengers summon the bus simply by ringing either the driver’s service number or Cumann na Daoine.
Operating within the three-mile town boundary, it is essentially a free service though a €2 donation per journey is recommended and generally accepted. “But anyone declining or unable to contribute is still welcome,” says Community Bus Treasurer Leslie Godfrey.
Cumann na Daoine launched the service in 2009 as a hired bus under the auspices of hackney and bus operator John Long. A year later, St Mary’s Senior Citizens Group in Knockaheeny donated a bus to the group, enabling it to strive and thrive more independently. However “it costs over €7,000 to maintain the bus, exclusive of any extra costs such as emergency driver cover,” says John. “We rely almost totally on fundraising and donations and Youghal people have been brilliant to us, ” he adds.
FAS currently funds the Thursday & Friday drivers but volunteer drivers with appropriate qualifications, are always needed, particularly given the new, extended hours. Equally volunteers are sought for the crucial role of ‘driver companions’ to assist passengers and the smooth running of the service.
Today the community bus has over 150 registered clients, many of whom would reside in the upper reaches of Youghal’s hills and inclines. “The vast majority use it for shopping but there are also visits to the family, doctor appointments, library service, swimming pool, beach, park, etc.,” Leslie reflects.
‘Not a hackney alternative’
‘One hackney operator recently criticised the bus’s negative impact on the hackney trade, particularly in austere times. Leslie accepts that “some impact was inevitable” but stresses that the service was “never intended as a rival to anyone and we don’t want to engage in any dispute over it.” She believes that most users would be in the low income bracket and use the bus because it is economical.
Leslie’s point is supported by Community Bus Vice-chair Bree Browne, a sprightly, widowed pensioner with two knee replacements. “I live at the top of Windmill Hill,” she says, “My late husband used to drive us, but now I couldn’t afford to come down town without the bus. It’s a huge asset to pensioners. I’d still rather be 40 and use hackneys and any other suggestion is ridiculous,” she adds.
Leslie is reluctant to create ripples with any other service provider but she does feel that most bus passengers would previously have been reliant on family members for transport, shopping, etc. and so the loss to the hackney industry would be relatively small. She further accredits “the social aspect” as a string inducement to bus passengers who simply might otherwise not leave their homes much at all.
Addressing the issue of verification, which has also been questioned, Leslie says “a certain degree of trust is involved” when people complete the application form detailing their credentials. “We issue membership cards to our members, most of whom we would know anyway. We ask that the card be produced on boarding the bus and if here is doubt about someone and they don’t have the card, they are not allowed on. We have refused people to board.”
The new Community Bus timetable is as follows: Mon-Tuesday-Wednesday: 9.30am-2pm; Thursday: 9.30am-5pm; Friday: 10am-5pm; Saturday: 10am-2pm. Bookings/Calls on (024) 91900 (weekday working hours) or 087-1759555. “When possible, we’d ask people to book a day or night in advance,” advises John Cunningham. The bus does not run on bank holidays.

The only town in Ireland to be awarded three Blue Flags for 2011, Youghal was celebrating last night (Thursday 9th June 2011) and hoping that the announcement by Environment Minister Phil Hogan will draw much-needed additional tourism into the area. The east Cork town gained an extra flag for its Front Strand while retaining the standard for both Redbarn and Claycastle – much to the delight of the Town Council.
“We had an inkling of the news last week but we now have three Blue Flag beaches that stretch across all areas of our strand. This is a very rare achievement and we are absolutely thrilled,” Helen Mulcahy, acting Town Clerk, told the Cork News.
“We were very disappointed when we lost the Blue Flag for Front Strand. There was a problem with the water quality but it really was borderline and could be attributed to bad weather at the time. Readings are taken at certain times of the year though, and they don’t always do justice to the quality of the water.
“However, this year we ticked all the boxes. We’ve been working very hard cleaning the beaches and putting various facilities in place like wheelchair ramps and litter bins. We’ve been going around the clock trying to meet all the criteria and thankfully we have managed to do just that. This is a great achievement for the Town Council, the local Tidy Town group and for Cork County Council.”
There are high hopes the news will result in more tourists coming in to visit the town, which has suffered badly from factory closures and job losses over the last number of years. “Youghal has been very badly hit recently, especially by the amount of unemployment we’re seen. One of the few assets the town has left is its beaches and we have to do everything we can to exploit that,” Ms. Mulcahy added.
“Youghal has beautiful strands and it’s a wonderful place to come and visit or spend some time on holiday. If visitors come, it could well generate more employment in the locality and hopefully start something positive. People come from far and wide to use Blue Flag beaches and tend to avoid ones that aren’t designated with the award. So we do expect a good response from the public and for them to come in their droves, especially if the sun starts to shine.”
Cork received 11 Blue Flags in total for criteria such as water quality, information provision and beach management and the national total of 82 is an increase of eight from 2010. The other beaches in Cork are Garryvoe, Garretstown, Garrylucas, Inchydoney, Owenahincha, the Warren, Tragumna and Barleycove.
