This year Youghal Cycling Club are delighted to announce, that in 2012, we will be supporting local athlete Amanda Crotty in her preparations for the Paralympic Games later this year.  Amanda, who has been visually impaired since birth, is a member of Youghal Athletic Club and the Irish Paralympic Team.  As a visually impaired runner, she competes while tethered to a guide, who must always remain behind the athlete.

We are also delighted to announce that Cognex Corporation have continued their sponsorship of The Vee Challenge for 2012.  Running a cycling sportiff has significant costs and recurring expenses.  Having a main sponsor is a massive help to the Club and ensures maximum return of funds raised to the chosen recipients.  Cognex Corporation designs, develops, manufactures and markets a range of products that incorporate sophisticated machine vision technology that gives them the ability to “see.”   Cognex products include barcode readers, machine vision sensors and machine vision systems that are used in factories, warehouses and distribution centres around the world to guide, gauge, inspect, identify and assure the quality of items during the manufacturing and distribution process.  Cognex is the world’s leader in the machine vision industry, having shipped more than 700,000 vision-based products, representing over $3 billion in cumulative revenue, since the company’s founding in 1981.  Headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts, USA, Cognex has regional offices and distributors located throughout North America, Japan, Europe, Asia and Latin America.  For details, visit Cognex on-line at http://www.cognex.com

In 2012 we will again offer two routes for riders.  The 130km Vee Challenge which takes in the ascent of the Vee from Lismore and descending into Clogheen before climbing the Vee again through the Sheep’s Pass  From here we head to the food stop on the road to Cappoquin.  Refuelled the route will pass by the Blackwater Valley taking in the beautiful Dromana drive before heading for the coast and the final sting in the tail, at Monatrea, offering fantastic views of Youghal town.

The second option is the 90km Vee Ascent.  This route covers most of the roads that the Vee Challenge incorporates with participants climbing the Vee as far as Glenaknockaun before turning back for the R669 and the welcome food stop along this gentle descent into the town of Cappoquin.  This route is ideal for those looking for a moderate challenge with the scenic climb of the Vee, along with the beautiful Dromana drive part of the route.  A reasonable level of fitness would be required to enjoy your day in the saddle and the fantastic scenery that the area offers.

Youghal Cycling Club To Fundraise For Little Zoe’s Cancer Treatment. – By Christy Parker

YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB is to undertake a 165km fundraising ride on behalf of an 18 month old little girl with a rare cancer condition. Half twin Zoe Lehane Lavarde, from Mallow, suffers from  Atypicalteratoid/Rhabdoid Tumour AT/RT, an aggressive form of the disease. Her mum Orlaith is a first cousin of Tony Walsh, Tinnock, Youghal, who has organised the cycling event.

Zoe is currently in America, where she is receiving specialist treatment at the Burzynski centre in Houston, Texas.  She, her mum, dad Alex and twin brother Leo travelled to Houston last July, to provide Zoe with a much improved chance of survival.

Zoe’s condition was diagnosed earlier this year when her family noticed she was quieter than normal and also losing balance a little. She soon became very ill and was rushed to CUH. Doctors removed a tumour from her brain but the cancer remained.  The cancer form arises in either in the cerebellum (lower, back part of brain that controls balance) or cerebral cortex and often spreads through the central nervous system. Highly malignant, it is usually diagnosed in childhood.

Orlaith and Alex were told that Zoe’s conventional treatment in Ireland would involve strong chemotherapy and just a 10-30% chance of success. The family began researching options and discovered the pioneering Burzynski centre. They travelled to the city last July for a first assessment, after which Zoe was deemed suitable for treatment. “The doctors are pleased with the progress so far but there is still a long and uncertain road ahead,” says Tony.

As always in the US, the medical treatment, which may take up to 18 months, is extremely expensive and, alongside accommodation costs, could reach up to €700,000. The family hope that, eventually, Zoe may be able to continue her treatment in Holland if her condition improves to a stage where it would be viable to re-locate.

The family have established a website www.mysisterzoe.com in Leo’s name where details of Zoe’s brave battle and the various fundraising events are posted. “The people of Mallow and indeed many other places have been extremely generous and supportive,” Tony says, “I want to thank most sincerely Ger Flanagan of the Youghal News and Youghal Cycling Club for their interest and their help in the campaign,” he adds.

Tony will be amongst about 20 cyclists expected to participate in September’s event. The journey will leave the Market Square at 9 am and visit Tallow, Fermoy, Mallow, Blarney, Ballincollig, Bishopstown, Cork city and Midleton before returning to Youghal.  Donations can be made through sponsorship cards, collection boxes on the day or through the following Ulster Bank account: A/c no: 10880255; sort code: 986070 International Details:IBAN:IE47ULSB98607010880255; IBAN BIC: ULSBIE2D

The Youghal Cycling Club were delighted to present the fundraising cheque to the Keith Phelan Appeal recently. The charity fundraiser cycle from Youghal to Castlemartyr was held last October. The funds will aid local boy Keith Phelan from Raheen Park, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, to travel to Germany for an operation, in the hope that it will improve his quality of life. The Phelans are attempting to raise enough money to bring Keith to the XCell-Center Dusseldorf, Germany where they believe he could benefit from stem cell treatment. Following inquiries to the centre they were informed that Keith had a number of options: surgical or lumber puncture (where cells are withdrawn from the hip bone marrow, good cells are retained in the lab where they regenerate and are reinserted by lumber puncture). It takes five days to complete the procedure.

An account for the fund has been set up through the Allied Irish Bank and the family is already busy planning ways to make the campaign successful.

To donate to the fund: Sort Code: 93-43-05, Acc. No.: 05841087. To contact to assist in fundraising or organise events, contact: 024-20843.

A beautiful bright October morning greeted the 60 or so cyclists who met at Barry’s Lane and the main man himself Keith got proceedings underway with a photoshoot before waving the cyclists off on the outward journey to Castlemarty.

A foodstop was made at “The Village Greengrocer ” in Castlemarty with the Walsh family pulling out all the stops by offering the cyclists some of the finest homemade apple pie and scones that East Cork has to offer.

Denise Fitzgerald from the East Cork Journal captures the event - The recently launched appeal for Keith is rapidly gaining momentum. If you would like to help please contact the Phelan family.

The Club and the Phelan family would like to extend their thanks to clubman John Walsh and his family for opening their premises on a Sunday morning and accommodating the charity cycle with their fantastic hospitality.

Refulled and a tad heavier the group took off for the homeward journey back to Youghal with the wind at their backs. There to greet the cyclists was Keith and his family and with a couple of photos for the local media, three rousing cheers were given for young Keith.
