The Youghal CYMS 2009 Kevin Mangan Memorial Snooker Tournament
This Kevin Mangan Memorial Snooker Tournament took place at the Youghal CYMS, Market House, Market Square on Fri. Nov. 20th 2009. This tournament was well supported by Kevins many friends from the town. Youghal CYMS President Mr. William Kelly said he was delighted with the large amount of entries. He said ” This tournament is to honour the memory of a great man, who was very popular with the members of the society, both senior and junior. Kevin and his family are well respected by all of us here as one can see by the camaraderie amongst his friends and the players. It is definetly one of the most popular senior tournaments in the snooker calendar”.

Kevin’s mother Phil Mangan spoke afterward the tournament and thanked the Youghal CYMS for keeping Kevin’s memories alive. She also thanked all who participated in the tournament as she knew their were all friends of Kevin.

Irish National Snooker Champions Aaron Tobin and Brendan Cooney triumphant return to their home snooker club at Youghal C.Y.M.S.
Cooney in winning the Irish Masters title defeated Austrian based ex professional Richard McHugh 5 frames to 3 and as Irish champion qualifies for the World Championships in India in november,he also finished as RIBSA No. 1 ranked player for the 08/09 season hence completing a rare double. The Munster U-21 Snooker Championships were held at Youghal Catholic Young Men’s Society on Good Friday. 13 year old Arron Tobin from Youghal CYMS became the youngest player to win the Munster U 21 Snooker Championships title when he beat Ryan Cronin from Cork by 3 frames to 2 in an excellent final. In a close final that could have went either way. Arron won the first frame on the colours but Ryan came back to win the next two frames and then when Arron won frame four to make it 2 all which made for an exciting final frame match. Ryan looked in control of the final frame but with two reds left, Arron needed all the balls, when he hit one of the best 41 clearances anyone could see and it was fitting for Arron to lift the U-21 Munster trophy to be this years worthy winner. Both players played super snooker all day to reach the final with Ryan causing the biggest shock of the day beating number one seed and defending champion- Irish International David Hogan in the first round. Ryan beat Youghal CYMS’s James Hennessy 2 nil in the semi final. The other semi final Arron beat Irish u 19 International Tony Moore 2 nil to reach the final. The Youghal CYMS A and B teams travelled to Killarney to compete in the annual Munster Club Snooker Championships. The A team came out of their group and were successful in qualifying for the up coming All Ireland Club Snooker Championships which will be held again in Killarney. Youghal CYMS will entered two teams of five in their bid to emulate their success of 2000 to try and win the Ladbrokes sponsored event for the first time in almost a decade.Led by current over-40 Irish International Brendan Cooney, Youghal “A” find themselves in a tough group along with Fermoy, Waterford “C” and Masters “B”, whilst Youghal “B” kick off their campaign with a difficult fixture against the 2008 champions New Institute.The competition is made up of six groups of four, with the six pool winners and two best runners-up qualifying for the knockout stages. The four semi-finalists will qualify automatically for the Irish Championships one week later at the same venue.

Bernie Kennedy presents The John Kennedy Senior Chess Trophy 2008 to winner

The Inaugural John Kennedy Memorial Chess Tournament took place at The Youghal CYMS. John’s sister Bernie Kennedy representing the Kennedy family presented the trophies and John’s old acquaintance and sparring partner John Kiely was also present.
Bernie thanked the members of Youghal CYMS for the friendship and kindness they showed to John and for the great send off they gave him especially the guard of honour at his funeral, which the family much appreciated.
Bernie said ‘John was one of the founding members of the Youghal Chess Club together with John Kiely, Darragh O’Leary, Alex Brophy and some others. When he was in good health he used to play Chess and Draughts in the Hall and he loved to teach the games to both the senior and juniors. He would be proud today to see the Read more

The junior snooker team finals were held last Saturday and all the players showed great skill on the green baize. The players turned out in the obligatory dress code, which was great to see. Snooker amongst the juniors was never so popular at the society and all the championship tables are in constant play. The tables are kept in impeccable order due to the high standard of care by the four caretakers and the tournament committee ran the event to a strict timetable.
