Youghal United secure a new club main sponsor! – Exciting times ahead for Youghal United after the club secured a new sponsor in Paul & Carmel Dempsey at Berties Bar. Youghal United and Berties partnership go back years with “old” Bertie being a sponsor and supporter of Youghal United for many a year. Everyone involved with the club is pleased to be back at Berties again.

Munster Senior Cup 2nd Round.

Passage 0 – 2 Youghal United.

Youghal yet again had another good result away in the Munster Senior Cup 2nd round to Passage. The lads won 2-0 with two second half goals by Leigh Desmond. Best for were the centre half partnership of Seamus Landers and Anthony Kelly.

Under 19

Youghal United 1 – 3 Greenwood.

This was a poor result and a poor performance by the Youghal lads. The 1st half had little to entertain the local supporters. Greenwood hit the crossbar but Bobby Donoughue had the best chance when 1 on 1 with the keeper. Colin Sheehan & Calum Gallogley had half chances, but nothing more. The 2nd half was a catalog of disasters for the home team. First the influential Ross Desmond came off injured, Greenwood took the lead when the keeper left the ball roll under his body & into the net. Youghal rallied and equalised through Jerome Glavin. However, soon after the game turned when Youghal had a player sent off in controversial circumstances. Greenwood regained the lead, when from a corner the centre forward stooped to head home. Calum Phelan was badly injured and Greenwood made it 3-1.Worse was to follow with another red card, this time no complaints. A Bad defeat – too many below par performances, gone was the fluent passing football of previous games and too much ill discipline. Hopefully lessons can be learned and the team can move on to better displays. WW/EC division 1

Youghal United 5 – 0 Accrington.

Paul Hennessy capped off a great performance on Sunday scoring early in the second half to keep Youghal’s push for promotion on track. Youghal got off to a quick start when a fast corner to Stephen Ring was delivered to the back post and Spillane headed to the net. Soon after Mark O’ Connor was taken down at the edge of the area and Sammy Coakley blasted it to the bottom corner to make it 2-0. Accrington got into the game and Youghal had to depend on keeper Andrew Duggan to pull off two super saves just before the break. Youghal got their third when Stephen Barry was taken down in the area up stepped captain Chris Hennessy to cooly send the keeper the wrong way. Early in the second half man of the match Paul Hennessy sealed it for Youghal when he met Coakleys free kick to net that was Paul’s third goal of the season. Accrington never gave up and had another great chance but Duggan pushed a powerful shot over the bar. Late on Barry broke down the right before crossing to his captain Chris Hennessy who made no mistake making it 5 – 0. This was Stephen Rings last game of the season for Youghal as he goes on his travels , the club, all his team mates and management would like to wish him all the best in his venture down under he will be sadly missed.

Under 15

Carrigaline United 0 – 6 Youghal United.

Having watched Youghal on a couple of occassions playing so well away

from home but returning empty handed it was nice to see the lads get

their just rewards today at Bealla Park. On a beautiful day for

football Youghal had control of this game from start to finish.

Playing on the fantastic astroturf surface allowed both teams play

Fast flowing football which always makes for a more enjoyable game to

watch. Youghal took the game to the opposition right from the kick off

and it was only a matter of time before the goals started to

come. Their first from a free kick from outside the box which Andi

Nelrexhepi placed nicely in the top left hand corner of the net with

the help of a slight deflection. Number two and three came from man of

the match Conor Dempsey having been put through on both occasions by

some great passing held his nerve and slotted the ball past the

stranded Carrigaline keeper. Goal number four was the pick of the

bunch as Darren O Conner picked up the ball in his own half, carried

it to the edge of the box and lashed an unstoppable drive to the top

corner. Goal number five again came from an Andi Nelrexhepi free kick,

this time from the edge of the box Andi opted for power and just drove

it straight through a crowded penalty area into the net. The final goal

came from some great work down the left flank by Zack Downey which

resulted in a fine cross by Padraig Delaney being guided into the net

by the hard working Kenneth Cantillon. Youghal never looked in trouble

in this game and the few excursions Carrig made into the Youghal half

were dealt with by a defensive unit well marshsled by captain on the

day James Skelly. Manager Gavin O Leary will be well pleased with this

Youghal United 11 – 2 Mallow.

Just look at this score line and it tells you all there is to know about this game. The home side were totally dominant throughout and cruised to what could be their easiest victory for the season against third position in the league table Mallow. Kieran Daly got one goal, Liam Moylan Ansbro scored a hat trick but the top scorer on the day with an unbelievable 7 goals was Jake O Brien. The lads are still top of the table and have made an excellent start to the season.

Next month we are hoping to hold a soccer marathon having the underage teams play during the day and finishing with a friendly/competitive game between a selection of players from Berties and Mackeys. The club has organised a lovely new kit for all kids and is excellent value

at only €30. The kit includes jersey, socks and shorts. The kit can be tried on for size at Sports And Leisure and orders can be made there. Names and

numbers on the back of the jersey will cost extra.

All Weather Pitch

Youghal United’s all weather pitch is available to rent from 25 euro per

hour and there are some mid-week times available to any group or club

Two new caretakers have commenced work with the club in looking after our all-weather pitch.  Mandatory €2 is required as a contribution towards the mortgage payments on the all weather pitch.

The club would like to take this opportunity to thank outgoing chairman Finbarr Walsh for his dedication and commitment over the past 13 years in his involvement in many a position on the committee and his second spell as club chairman.

Finbarr has dedicated himself to the cause working extremely hard in the development and progression of the club moving forward. Due to work commitments and Finbarr being heavily involved in the underage setup he found it very difficult to marry all these tasks. However, Finbarr will still be involved with the underage program and managing the under 17 team. We at Youghal United wish Finbarr all the best for the future.

Damien O Brien has been appointed interim chairman until the end of the season. Damien’s history with Youghal United speaks for itself as for the past 17 years or so he has been heavily involved in many areas of the club. Serving as club secretary, treasurer, committee member and had a pivotal role in getting the all weather pitch and flood lighting the top pitch. Damien also carry’s out general maintenance of the grounds and he is the one responsible for having the pitches in superb condition come match day. Sometimes getting flack for calling off games but it is he who only knows too well the work and time involved in repairing pitches.

I spoke to Damien during the week and he is optimistic and excited about the challenge ahead. His vision for the club is to keep it moving forward having the best of facilities for the clubs over 300 members with 13 competitive teams and 5 non-competitive teams in total. The club caters for underage girls teams and a ladies team too which is very important. Clubs these days have to be run like a business and without income the club would go out of business. We are not alone in struggling in this area and we will be asking members to help out in future fund raisers and let’s work together for the betterment of Youghal United.

Intermediate Cup 2nd Round

Youghal United 0 – 0 Fermoy.

Youghal win 5-3 on penalties after as both teams could not be separated AET.

This could be the beginning of another great cup run as Youghal United put high flying Munster Senior league 1 side Fermoy out of the Intermediate cup at a windy and cold Ardrath Park. This was a typical cup tie with both sides battling well in attack and defence and had a bit of rivalry as both sides are very familiar with each other after many a battle down through the years.

The first half was a cagy affair as it seemed like each side took a period of dominance having the majority of possession in each phase. First real chance fell to the home side when a high ball into the box was headed out by Teddy Cunningham to the waiting Tommy Butler who’s volley was superbly saved low to the keepers right hand side. It was always going to be something special to beat ex Cork City’s keeper Michael Divine with his wealth of experience. Fermoy at the other end were fortunate not to have been blown for offside when they put a great ball into the box but to the credit of the defence they played the whistle and cleared the danger. Anthony Kelly gave an exhibition on defending making some important last ditch tackles while in attack Robert Cronin, Leon Geary, Bobby Donoghue and Leigh Desmond were a constant reminder to the Fermoy backline that they would at the end of any mistake or misplaced pass. Half Time 0-0.

Most of the second half belonged to Youghal as the ever tricky Tommy Butler and Paul Kelly showed their skills nut megging and rounding defenders for fun and on one occasion Tommy released a great left foot shot which was only millimetres wide. Paul Kelly was tormenting the Fermoy side with his energy and movements going forward. Youghal can count themselves lucky on 70 mins as the ball seemed to hit Leigh Desmond’s hand and everyone stopped including Leigh, no whistle from the referee even under the roar from the away team. Youghal introduced fresh legs in the line of Patrick Durkin and Shane Ryan for Teddy Cunningham and Leon Geary respectively for the remaining ten minutes. Full Time 0-0.

The game had to finish on the night so ten minutes in each extra time half had to be played and penalties if required. Both teams were not giving much away in extra time and tiredness set in. Patrick Durkin struck the wall with a free kick and Robert Cronin shot across the goal as a result. David Kearns punched away under pressure an in swinging high ball. Overall the lads played some fine passing football and after 110 mins of play we were headed for penalties. Youghal scored all five spotters P.Durkin,T.Butler,A.Kelly,D.O’Keeffe,L.Desmond against a reputable ex league of Ireland keeper and our own David Kearns saved Fermoys 4th penalty. Leigh Desmond made the lonely walk from the centre circle to the penalty spot and fired Youghal into the 3rd round of the Intermediate cup.

Youghal United 4 – 1 Crofton Celtic.

Another great league win for the boys here with an impressive 4-1 home win against Crofton who are currently 5 points behind Youghal United in the league table. Tommy Butler and David O Keeffe’s penalty kept the home side ahead at the break 2-1. Man of the match Robert Cronin scored Youghal’s third while Leigh Desmond rounded off a good home win. It must be said that Sean Kenneally had a fine game in his unfamiliar role at centre half. Well done lads!!

West Waterford/East Cork Division 1

Youghal United 2 – 5 Lismore AFC.

Youghal hosted top of the table side Lismore on Saturday afternoon. Youghal started brightly and found themselves a goal up after only 13 mins. Great work between Stephen Barry and Diarmuid Shuel put Mark O Connor through and he coolly lobbed the keeper for his sixth goal in 3 games. on 20 mins Lismore drew level when a mix up in defence left the goal wide open soon after Lismore took the lead.The away team were well on top after this and it could have being worse for Youghal only two great saves from Andrew Duggan kept the score 2 1 at half time. In the second half Lismore got their third and it all seemed lost but Diarmuid Shuel hit a low drive into a crowded area and the ball found its way to the net. The home side drove forward and were awarded a penalty when Mark O Connor was brought down up stepped Stephen Barry but the keeper saved his effort. Kinesalebeg 0 – 6 Youghal United.

Youghal bounced back after defeat at home to Lismore last week hitting kinsalebeg for 6. With only 8 mins on the clock Youghal were awarded a free kick and the quick thinking Mark O Connor took it fast to put Paul Hennessy through and he blasted the ball past the keeper. On 27 mins good football between Barry and Shuel set Shuel free and his low cross was met by Trevor Carey who netted his second goal of the season.  9 mins left to half time Stephen Barry’s corner was met by the head of Shane Spillane giving the keeper no chance. in the second half Mrett moloney making his debut played the perfect pass through to Diarmuid Shuel and he slotted it in. Youghal were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box on 70 mins and Sammy Coakley cracked it to the top corner. John Mason who replaced Trevor Carey got the last when he met Barry’s cross to drive the ball home. Great win for Youghal who now must think about next weeks home game to Accrington Celtic kick off 2.30 Sunday 30th Oct. Cork U19 league

Youghal Utd 4 – 3 Carrigaline

This must be the longest home fixture off all time. Originally the fixture was in the paper to be a home tie for Youghal but our secretary received a call from the fixtures secretary in Cork saying the fixture was reversed. No problem with this but he never informed the referee and the Carrigaline team so we were left in the situation Youghal were in Carrigaline and the referee & Carrigaline were in Youghal. Youghal rushed back from Cork and luckily the fixture was played and we got a very good win under the circumstances. Well done to all for the effort……..

With a jekly& hyde performance Youghal had a thrilling 4- 3 win over Carrigaline. For a change Youghal started brightly & created a couple of half chances. After 15 mins, Calum Gallogley drove the ball into the bottom right corner from a through ball from Aaron O` Connor 1 – 0 . Then the wheels came off  passes went astray, tackles were missed and defenders stood off their men. Carrigaline`s centre forward gave the defence a torrid time. On 3 occasions he drifted in behind the defence to score twice & set up one to make the score line 1 – 3. The home side were stunned and did well to get to half time with no further damage done. Youghal had to do something and the managers made 2 substitutions & 1 positional change that had an immediate effect. After 2 mins Ross Desmond broke into the box to score 2-3. Next after some sharp inter- passing Calum Phelan scored which made it 3-3. Youghal were now well on top and when Bobby Donoughue  broke down the right, beat two defenders before crosssing for Jerome Glavin to score.( I`m sure he tried to miss) but in fairness it put the home side ahead 4- 3. All this action with still 15 mins remaining and they should have added to the score line to make life a little more comfortable. They didn’t and the last 15 mins was nerve wracking, Carrigaline piled on the pressure forcing Youghal deep into their own half. David Cashman was like a rock in goal, marshalling and having a calming influence on the defence. Jerome & Bobby got injured leaving Youghal short up front. The final whistle went to everyones relief. In football terms not their best display but the great character they showed will stand them good. Best for Youghal: David Cashman, couldn’t be faulted for any of the goals & was cool, calm & assured when it mattered most. Darren McCarthy made a huge differance when coming on and the 2 Calums ran themselves into the ground for the team. Team: D. Under 15’s

Rathcoole 4 – 0 Youghal United

This game was played in what can only be described as horrendous

conditions. It was always going to suit the physically stronger and

fitter team which in this case was Rathcoole. Youghal travelled to

this fixture with a very depleted squad due to illness and injury and

it was made worse when top defender Andi Nelrexhepi limped off after

20 minutes. The game was very evenly matched for the first 20 with both

sides finding the conditions tough. Rathcoole then scored two goals in

a minute which gave them the momentum to go on and score again before

the break. The second half was one the Youghal coaches will be very

happy with as rather than drop the heads the lads brought the game to

Rathcoole. Wave after wave of Youghal attack put the opposition on

the back foot for most of the half. With so many of the Youghal lads

pushing forward Rathcoole managed to break and score no 4.The

scoreline was not in any way a reflection of the game and the lads can

be very proud of this performance. From the coaches point of view it

was great to see the team at all times trying to get the ball down

and play. Special mention goes to James Skelly and Adam Quirke in

their first appearence as a central defensive unit these two were

Many people will now always remember Youghal’s June Bank Holiday 2010 as the weekend that at Youghal United’s home ground ‘Ardrath Park’ the brave players broke the Guinness World Record for a 5-A-Side soccer match.

Youghal United Schoolboys/Girls and Academies will benefit from funds raised during that gruelling challenge. The new record will take some beating and the efforts by not only the players but all the back-up people involved in this magnificent moment in Youghal United’s history will never be forgotten.

The day to day running costs such of a soccer club as everyone knows is significant with cost such as transport, equipment, maintenance amongst many other costs during the season and all monies that were raised are sincerely appreciated.

Youghal United Promotion Committee member Emmet Perry said “The whole event really brought the town together and the support we received was truly brilliant. I would like to thank on behalf of everyone involved in our Guinness Book of Records success our sponsors,Farrells Summerfield Bar, Berties,T&E Fitzgerald Homes, Sports & Leisure & Youghal Credit Union. All of the people who advertised in our commerative book.

16 players were involved in this remarkable weekend but without the help of Ken Dempsey, Jamie Lawton, Kieran Curly, Joe Crotty and Tony Kelly it would have never have been completed.

Under 16’s

Strand 1 – 4 Youghal United.

Our under 16 team got their season off to a winning start when they travelled to Strand and come away with all three points. Youghal led at half time 1-0 after Strand looked like the better team in the first half. They continued their dominance early in the second half when they got the equaliser. From that point on Youghal’s defence were on top and the lads got the ball on the deck and past it very well controlling the game to the finish. The lads took their chances well with 2 goals each for Danny Walsh & Eric Murphy. Best for Youghal: Sean Farrell & Mathew Farrell

Academy – Calling All Future Soccer Stars.

The 2011/12 Youghal Utd Academy soccer season is upon us with the U10’s (those born in 2002) first training event on Sunday the 4th of September at 4pm. The plan for this season is to hold two training sessions per week at 4pm on Sundays and 5pm on Wednesdays, with the focus on player development through training combined with friendly matches in Sept to Nov and Feb to Mar. This will be followed by participation in the Cork School Boys league in April and May and finish in Jun with the Len Rodgers Memorial Cup Tournament at Clashmore Rambler’s home ground.

The programme for this season concentrates on developing player’s skills and team participation, while ensuring that they enjoy the sport and continue with it for years to come. Following a successfully 2010/11 season the plan is to now build on where we finished in June when a number of the players won the hotly contested Len Rodgers tournament against teams such as Dungarvan Utd, Castlebridge Celtic and Valley Rangers. Following a strong start in the group stage the team progressed through to the semi-final, where they beat East End, and then went on meet Dungarvan A in the final where two great goals scored by Shane Deasy and Cian Coleman Butler secured victory and the Perpetual Shield.

All players and parents are welcome to come along at 4pm on the 4th, including of course those who may not have participated in previous years, to meet the coaches, hear more about the plans for this season and to join in the first training event.

We are also happy to announce that this season Simon Born will join the existing coaching team of Patrick Morrissey and Taras Kennedy, who have completed FAI’s Kick Start Coaching Programmes.

In addition to the U10’s, the U9’s (born 2003) with start training at 12pm on Sunday the 4th, while the U8’s (born 2004) will start at 11am on the 4th. Again all players and parents are welcome to come along to learn more about the Academy and its ambitions for the forthcoming season.

THE YOUGHAL BAPTIST CHURCH held its third annual Soccer Summer Camp at Youghal United’s Ardrath Park from Monday August 22nd to Thursday 25th. The camp was run in partnership with Coaching4Christ, (C4C) a Christian ministry formed in 2004 and whose mission, as described on its website is “to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the many thousands who love or have an interest in the game of football.”

The 65 children, of both genders, who took part, throughly enjoyed themselves over the 4days. The soccer coaches helped the children to improve their skills, with 15 minutes of Gospel sessions included in each coaching session. On the final day a ‘World Cup’ competition was held between the different groups representing famous soccer countries.

Each child received a medal with the World Cup winning team delighted to take away the 2011 trophy. Youghal Baptist Church minister Mervyn Scott said the facilities provided by Youghal United were top class and combined with the sunny weather made this year’s Soccer Summer Camp one to remember.

Coaching4Christ Summer Camps

Our summer camps are an opportunity for churches to use Coaching4Christ as an outreach opportunity with our week long program of skills and games ending the week with the ‘World Cup’. The Gospel Message is delivered through a series of talks on Creation, Sin, Jesus, and Salvation

Our Ministry

Coaching For Christ (C4C) was formed in 2004 as a Christian ministry to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the many thousands who love or have an interest in the game of football.

C4C sees the sport of football as an ‘outreach opportunity’ not an ‘obsession’. Millions of pounds are spent on sports and recreation around the world each year. If we’re not playing, we’re watching. C4C seeks to captivate this interest and use soccer as a platform for sharing God’s love.

Our Aim

The ultimate aim of C4C is to enable people to find a new ‘manager’, a different kind of rule book, and a prize that’s even better than the world cup! C4C seeks to introduce Jesus into their lives and give a new purpose for living.

Our Methods

C4C is made up of a team of qualified soccer coaches. Most importantly, each member of the team has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Having fully committed their lives to Him, they are determined to combine their skills and expertise in sports with their faith for the furtherance of the Gospel.

Whilst the interest in football has no age barriers, it is inevitable that a large area of the work of C4C is with young people.

The Youghal Baptist church will hold its third annual Soccer Camp at Youghal United’s Ardrath Park base from Monday August 22nd to Wednesday 25th.  The camp will be run in partnership with Coaching4Christ, (C4C) a Christian ministry formed in 2004 and whose mission, as described on its website is “to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the many thousands who love or have an interest in the game of football.”

Nine qualified soccer coaches attached to the ministry will help soccer enthusiastic children of both genders to improve their skills, with 15 minutes of Gospel sessions included in each coaching session. Youghal Baptist Church minister Mervyn Scott stresses that the coaches bring fully qualified coaching credentials to their work. “The children can expect a fun social occasion as well as improving their football abilities,” he explains, adding that, “Over the past two years they have earned a reputation for their friendliness and professionalism. Their return is eagerly anticipated by all who have attended previously.”

There will be two daily training sessions, from 10.30 am-12.30 pm (7-11 year-olds) and 2.30 pm-4.30 pm (12-14 year-olds). Cost totals €10 per child, with no charge for third and subsequent children (in genuine cases!). “We are very grateful to Youghal United AFC for the kind use of their excellent facilities,” concludes the minister. Maradona, the Argentinian who famously (or infamously for England fans) punched the ball past Peter Shilton in the 1986 World Cup quarter final, would surely approve!

Youghal (English pronunciation: /?j??l/; Irish: Eochaill, meaning “yew woods”) is a town in County Cork, Ireland. Sitting on the estuary of the River Blackwater, in the past it was militarily and economically important. Being built on the edge of a steep riverbank, the town has a distinctive long and narrow layout. At the 2002 census the population was 6,597, but the population of its catchment area is about 10,000.

Lying on the coastline of East Cork, the bustling and picturesque town of Youghal is deemed one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland. The historic walled seaport town of Youghal has many historic buildings and monuments within its ancient town walls, and has been designated as an Irish Heritage Port by the Irish Tourist Board. Formerly a strong manufacturing town, Youghal continues to experience sustained economic decline and employment in the town itself has seen a marked decrease in 2008. Many of the town’s population commute to work in the Cork or Waterford region.

Name

The name Youghal (pronounced yawl) comes from the Irish Eochaill meaning “yew woods”, which were once plentiful in the area. Older anglicisations of this name include Youghall, Yoghel and Yochil.

The meeting was attended by Assistant Town Clerk Helen Mulcahy, Town Manager Patricia Power, Mayor Mary Linehan-Foley, Town Foreman Ger Lupton, Town Engineer Paul Murray and Cllrs Barbara Murray (FG), Michael Beecher (FG), Michelle Hennessy (SF) Liam Burke (Green Party) , Eoin Coyne (FF) and Sammy Revins (FF).

Congratulations:

Cllr Murray congratulated the management and staff of both Cork County and Youghal Town Councils successfully working towards ensuring that Youghal has a blue flag on each of its three beaches. She asked the town manager to indicate to An Taisce that all three beaches are designated as Youghal locations, although technically Claycastle and Redbarn come under Cork County Council’s jurisdiction.) She further noted that the blue flags were accompanied by Green Coast awards, for wider environmental excellence. Cllr Burke observed that “Youghal is the only town in Ireland with three blue flags.”

Cllr Beecher praised the town’s artistic, musical and sporting talent in general. By example, he cited the Youghal Soccer Club’s “world class” presentation recently when they entertained Bray Wanderers. He elaborated with reference to Ireland’s renowned culture of welcome with reference to the visits of Queen Elizabeth and President Obama’s (although they avoided Youghal this time, possibly because the visits preceded the arrival of the third blue flag.) “It was fantastic to see the great Irish welcome,” he said before concluding the kudos with a tribute to CRY and its recent cancer charity promotion.

Votes of Sympathy:

Cllr Coyne called for a minute’s silence for Dr, Garret Fitzgerald and Brian Lenihan, “two wonderful men and fantastic servants to our nation who will be greatly missed.” This was duly observed.

Town Foreman’s Report:

Cllr Burke said a pothole at the bottom of Windmill Hill “keeps reappearing.” He then claimed that there were 11 errors in the Irish wording of the parking bye-law sign in Nealon’s Quay (probably replicated in similar signs in other car parks). He said the worse mistake was “the Irish for Monday,” being spelt “’Luna’ instead of ‘Luan’”, meaning the law was effective “from the moon to Saturday!”

Cllr Beecher wanted a sign at Claycastle indicating nearby toilets to be directed in the appropriate direction, as it was pointing to a private house whose residents were being disturbed by visitors wishing to avail of the facility!

Cllr Coyne wanted a loose manhole at Kenny’s Lane resolved,  he reiterated the misspelling of Irish words on the bye-law signs and sought clarification on the bye-law regarding dogs leashed on the beach during June-August. He was told it was requisite from 11 am to 7 pm seven days a week. He also sought pruning for some bushes on the Golf Links Road.

Mayor Mary Linehan Foley requested that weeds in the Mall be removed. She also asked, on behalf of some residents, that a railing be installed on a piece of ground being traversed by mass goers in Raheen Park. Happily, the railings at the former South Abbey school at South Abbey were an ideal fit and she suggested they be transplanted forthwith.

Cork County Council Items:

Cllr Revins observed that there were 42 pages in the latest Cork County Council Beach Bye Laws (oh Gawddd!) and while many of the stipulations would not be very relevant to Youghal, recommended that the councillors familiarise themselves with the details. Cllr Murray noted that the “very controversial bye-laws” irked many people with horse interests in west Cork, while dog issues mostly pertain to Youghal. Cllr Revins sought clarification on “a drain company offloading into the Slob bank renovation works. He learned that the substance in question was “sand and gravel” from a front strand sluice and not the contents of the town’s sewers as had been feared. (It’s unclear why it wasn’t just deposited on the beach).

Cllr Murray complained of the “absolute eyesore” that is the would-be library premises (the former Collins’s bakery). The town engineer said he would take up the matter with the county council. The councillor suggested that corri board be used an efficient and economic method of constructing signage to identify public toilets at the beach. They would be prominently displayed and visible from a distance. Cllr Murray then asked that highly visible signage be posted advertising the beach bye-laws. She also drew attention to a broken manhole cover in Dysart (near Strand church).

Cllr Beecher advised that a new gully be installed at Hillview, as previous efforts were insufficient. He asked that the road surface between Tesco and the council yard be improved to which the engineer said there was a shortage of manpower but he’d see what could be done. Cllr Beecher asked about the Tallow Road and was told that the road surfacing tenders were now in.

Cllr Burke delivered “the usual list of broken footpaths” aka Tallow Street South Main Street and junction of South Abbey/Strand Street,

Cllr Coyne said a pothole on Hayman’s hill was ever present and worrying and Mr. Murray said he hoped it could be repaired, budget permitting, along with works on Raheen Road. The councillor said the road surface at Knockaverry also needed remedying and the engineers said it was hoped to tend to it in 2012.

 

Mayors Business:

Cllr Linehan-Foley, in her final meeting as mayor, paid further tribute to former the late Taoiseach Garret Fitzgerald and Brian Lenihan TD. She wished absent Labour Cllr Tommy O’Connell a “full and speedy recovery” from his recent illness, the sentiments being unanimously endorsed. She conveyed best wishes to Team Youghal on their fundraising cycle across America and remarked that it was a great advertisement for the town. On behalf of the Youghal Concerned Citizens Group, she asked if the town hall rear area could be made available for the launch of the Youghal Bay Fish Pie award on July 2nd. The assistant town clerk asked that they contact her office. The mayor noted that here were many events planned for Youghal over the coming months before praising local events she had recently attended, including the “outstanding” First Army Band in the Collegiate Church on behalf of the Keith Phelan fund, a sand sculpture competition in Pilmore and the Munster Matchplay championship at Youghal Pitch and Putt club. The Vintage Vehicles day, Chatterbox, Choral and Musical societies, CRY’s Radiothon, Youghal Soccer Club versus Bray and, again, the Blue Flags were all lauded. The mayor hoped (probably in vain) that the national media would provide as much coverage for the blue flag regained as it did last year when it was lost! Cllr Beecher echoed the mayor’s sentiments that “negativity” was being afforded too much prominence.

 

Youghal Clock Gate Tower Business Plan:

Assistant Town Clerk Helen Mulcahy Sought and was given agreement to lease the Clock Gate to the Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group (YSEDG) for 7-10 years at an allowable rent and so enable that body to seek funding towards developing the structure.

Report on Claycastle Leisure Company by Chairperson (Mayor Linehan-Foley):

Following a recent meeting of the company, the mayor said, all was going well at the centre. However it was hoped that one (unnamed) school in Youghal would avail of the facility rather than travelling to another centre as was its current practice. “We need all the schools using it to keep it open,” she stated, adding that when funding was being sought to construct the centre, all the schools had indicated a need for the facility. A previous letter to the school inquiring as to its apparent aversion to using Aura had not received a response and another is to be dispatched.

Meeting with Youghal Chamber re: Motion:

“In the interests of advancing new retail business within the Town Centre, where an existing outlet has been vacant for a period of two years or more that Youghal Town Council call on the Chamber of Commerce/Youghal Traders Association to initiate guidelines/policy among its members and possibly all landlords within Youghal that such properties as mentioned above would be made available at 50% of the current market rental value for start-up retail businesses for a period of two years”:

It was decided to seek this meeting after the council’s July meeting (July 12th) rather than following the AGM on Tuesday 21st June as proposed.

Any Other Business:

Cllr Murray drew attention to the availability of the town hall/Mall Arts Centre as a location for civil marriages. She believed very few people were unaware of this fact and congratulated the council for its foresight in registering it as such.

Youghal Utd 1 Bray Wanderers 3: PREMIER DIVISION Bray Wanderers took just eight minutes to show their cup pedigree when they eased past Youghal United at Ardrath Park, east Cork, last Sunday.

Man-of-the-match John Mulroy slotted home the opening goal from Shane O’Neill’s pass and, six minutes later, it was 2-0 to Pat Devlin’s side. Ireland Under-19 star Conor Murphy started and finished the move that led to the second goal as he chipped high into the far corner of the net.

But it could have been so different had Youghal taken a gilt-edged chance in the opening minute but Bobbi Donoghue was unable to poke the ball home at the far post.

Youghal pulled a goal back through Clohessy on 34 minutes with a neat finish but Bray restored their two-goal advantage when Mulroy chipped in his second after 57 minutes.

Youghal United V Bray Wanderers

This is undoubtedly the biggest game in the history of Youghal United football club. Since the draw was made on Mon 9th May the reality of playing an Irish league premier division side in the line of Bray Wanderers at home at Ardrath Park in the 3rd round of the FAI cup , players , management , committee and members have kicked into over drive.

Everything else has been put on hold in preparation for the big day. A lot of work, organising and prepping needs to be done and of course it couldn’t be done without sponsorship. We are getting a great response again from the businesses in the town and as you can appreciate we cannot get to everyone in such a short period of time. However, we are working on a match day program and if anyone out there wants to place an ad to advertise your business or club then please contact Anthony Horgan on 086-6013685 for further details. Youghal United knows only too well how the current economic climate is not good and appreciates any bit of sponsorship that could be given.

The focus is directly on the team and making sure we represent ourselves as best we can and also it’s a great opportunity to show off the club and it’s first class facilities at Ardrath Park. We will be pushing the promotion of the game in all forms of media, print, internet and radio both in town and the county. Youghal United will be hoping for a huge turnout on the day to come up support and cheer on the lads.
