In Memoriam: Martin Hallinan, A Pillar of Youghal and Beyond
It is with profound sadness that we at YoughalOnline.com pay tribute to a remarkable individual, Martin Hallinan, who has left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. A native of Killanley, Sligo, Martin had made Youghal, Cork his home, where he lived a life of service and dedication.
Martin’s journey on this earth came to a peaceful end on the 23rd of April, 2024, surrounded by his adoring family and under the compassionate care of the staff at St. Catherine’s ward, Mercy University Hospital, Cork. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Eileen (nee Twohig) and his brother Pádraig, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
His absence will be deeply felt by his sister Ann McGowan (Easkey, Co. Sligo), brother Richard, sisters-in-law Maura Twohig and Cáit Smiddy, brother-in-law Jim Twohig, and his cherished nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews. His wide circle of neighbours and friends also mourn the loss of a true gentleman.
Martin’s life was a testament to his commitment to his community. His tenure as a former Sinn Féin county councillor and Youghal Town Council member was marked by significant contributions to Youghal and its surroundings. Elected in 2004, he became the first member of Sinn Féin to take a seat on the council since the 1920s, a testament to his dedication and leadership.
Independent councillor Mary Linehan Foley, who worked with Martin for 15 years, remembers him as “one of the best public representatives” she knew. His helpfulness, courtesy, and unwavering commitment to serving Youghal and its surrounds were hallmarks of his character.
Sinn Féin Cork South Central TD, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, echoed these sentiments, describing Martin as a “lifelong, stalwart republican, and a true gentleman.”
As we bid farewell to Martin, we invite those who wish to pay their respects to join us at Egan’s Funeral Home, Greencloyne, Youghal, on Thursday evening, 25th April from 5.30pm until 7pm. A Requiem Mass will be held on Friday, 26th April at 10am in The Church of the Holy Family, Magners Hill, Youghal, followed by burial in North Abbey Cemetery, Youghal.
In memory of Martin Hallinan, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. His life and work have left an enduring legacy, and his spirit will continue to inspire us all. Rest in Peace, Martin. Your service and dedication will never be forgotten.
